Notes/Commercial Description:
"Brewmaster Ron Gansberg based this Apricot Ale on a Belgian Tripel, putting it through 16 months lactic fermentation and aging in French oak wine barrels. The apricots were allowed to slowly ripen before introduction into the beer; the beer then aged another four months on the fruit before bottling."

Sampled from a 750ml bottle purchased at Yankee Spirits in Attleboro, MA.

A - Golden with a yellowish tint and a big white head. The last remnants of foam lingers nicely.

S - Big apricot! Funk and tartness too. But I was surprised at the level of apricot. Very nice.

T - Wow! Super tart and sour yet the apricot flavor is right there. Nice depth, balance and complexity. One of my new favorite sours.

M - Lively from the nice fine carbonation but still smooth.

O - Pricy but well worth a try. Great to see a beer like this produced in the US.

750 mL bottle tasted as part of a blind Better Beer Authority (BBA) tasting, initial 2011 vintage (before the long-aging process), poured into a large snifter glass and drank over 30 minutes.

A: 3/3 - misty golden-yellow, initial frothy white head settles into a one finger glass lacing, low clarity (cannot see through), moderate alcohol legs

S: 11/12 - a really complex and intense admixture of fruit - apricot, Meyer lemon, lime - and barnyard notes, no detectable hops or malts; no detectable flaws

T: 18/20 - on first sip, there is an intense slap of both fruit and funk; this develops into complex fruit flavors - apricot (of course), lemon, ripe pear, tangerine - admixed with tart, barnyard flavors; as the flavors develop, there was a mild malt and wheat character; more alcohol flavors; finishes very dry

M: 4/5 - high carbonation; obviously, this very complex, and, as a result, it's not easily quaffable

T: 9/10 - wow, again, having this as part of a blind BBA tasting (thanks to Richard Hartogs for the opportunity), this beer totally impressed me; I read on some other reviews that this is an accessible sour, and I totally disagree with that - it's an intensely complex amalgamation of fruit and funk that could be very off-putting to those who don't have experience with sours; my only complaint is the acid brash that I start to experience after drinking too much; in short, this is one of the best American Wild Ales, and, as part of the tasting, I compared it to Cantilllon's Fou' Founne - high praise indeed and definitely recommended!

TOTAL - 45/50

A: Pours a hazed apricot color with a one finger white head that disappears pretty quickly.

S: Good lord, Cascade. This is amazing. The second I take a sniff of this, my mouth starts to water from the intensely sour aroma. Tart green apple, underripe raspberry, apricot pits and lemon mixed with a spicy oak note. As the beer warms, I start to get a jammy apricot note that's just incredible.

T: Opens with a big sour kick in the teeth. Sharp lemon bite, tart apricot and green apple and a ton of lactic sourness. There's a hit of dryness on the finish that seems to suck the moisture right out of your mouth. Once the dryness fades, I get a lingering jammy apricot note with some underripe cherry and oak. One of the best sours I've ever come across. I would love to be able to get this on a regular basis.

A 2009 bottle of the apricot. Poured into a hair of the dog glass.

It appears apricot color. It is solid off dark orange color just like an apricot. A small off-white slightly tan head appears a top of the beer.

It smells slightly oaky. There is a nice earthy oaky type of a flavor. I sense a little sour smell. There is a nice floral type of a smell that leads to a nice pure and natural fruity apricot smell.

It tastes initially a bit sour. I get a bit of a rose type of a flavor. A nice tart fruity apricot flavor is apparent. The apricot flavor is very strong but it is very natural tasting. There is a slight sweetness from the apricot that balances the sour flavor of the beer. I get almost a honey like earthy flavor from the beer as well. This beer has a fantastic balance to it.

The carbonation is low. The mouthfeel is champagne like.

The drinkability is fantastic. It has great flavor. It is quite light and it has a great sour flavor but it is not to sour so it is quite easy to drink.

Again cascade has made an amazing beer. I love how the beer is sour yet you can still fully taste the sweet fruity flavor of apricot. Worth buying if you see it.
