This NW style sour blond ale was barrel aged for up to nine months, then aged on fresh apricot for an additional six months. Aromas of sweet apricot blossoms and tart fruit are present as you draw the glass near. Deep, rich apricot flesh, then tart apricot notes dance on the palate and lead to a sweet apricot flesh finish with a lingering fruit tartness.

The aroma and taste of this beer set it it apart from any sour I've had. The apricot especially come through in the aroma. First sip is not overly tart, but it gains in strength as the beer sits. (195 characters)

Excellent, overall. One of my favorites from a 7-taster afternoon at the Cascade pub. Though a few were on the sweet side, the apricot was a more well-balanced beer, overall. (176 characters)

2013 bottle opened March 2015.

A - Loosely bubbled off-white head has nice retention and low lace. Opaque bright apricot body.

S - Sweet apricot jam with tart lemon and SweetTart candies.

T - Tart, crisp, underripe apricots and white peaches. Sweet apricot jam through the center. Acidic lemons and tart passionfruit finish.

M - Smooth, medium-full body with a really nice bright acidity.

O - Delicious apricot flavor, even 2+ years out, with a bold, smooth, well integrated acidity. (495 characters)

Hazy orange color with a short head had that rests as a constant plate.
Nice deep sour aroma with notes of orange-lemon, sulfur, must and some funky lactic.
Quite Sour and acid taste with notes of salt (lots), lemon, apple vinegar, green apples and finishing with mild apricot. Dry and acid aftertaste.
Light towards medium body with tiny bubbles. Alcohol of 7.76% is absent.
This brew sure matured well (2011). A Sour with a delicate apricot background that is able to show intense acid and sour notes without producing awkward sensations. (540 characters)

It tastes like fuzzy apricots. It's good. It's like...fruit juice with lactic acid.

2013 vintage. Very nice sour, just wish there was more fruit apparent. Dangerously drinkable, I crushed this in less than an hour. Warning: will overflow when you pop it. (170 characters)

Bottle shared at Umberto's tasting.

It pours a hazy light orange, with lots of visible carbonation, and a pretty big 1.5 inch head, and a little bit of lacing.

This one smells profoundly sour, tons of funk and lactic acid, a bit of vinegar, with a good helping of apricot too.

This is one brow-beating sour. We had West Ashley and Fou Foune in the same night, and this one couldn't hold a candle to either of them, as both were much more subtle than this one. Looking at this one on it's own merits is much better. It's bracingly sour, in every way, I get sour wine, sour apricots, sour oak, and sour lemon, tons of lactic acid, some white wine vinegar, etc. It tastes good, but it's definitely not subtle, or elegant. It's a big brash bruiser of a sour.

This is medium bodied, with a tangy, crisp mouthfeel, and a fairly high level of carbonation. It's a slow sipper due to the intense sourness.

This is a very bold sour, but I do tend to prefer the more nuanced sours. (975 characters)

Wow-- in you face tartness--- like sucking on a mouth puckering sweet tart the size of a urinal cake!
At first I was overwhelmed and a little off-put, but the more I drank it the more I liked it...
Nose is medicinal funk, like a hospital men's room...
But damn, that sour funkiness, backed up by lemon and apricots-- in the background-- and that sweet tart flavor of my youth are very appealing, especially thanks to a dry finish...

2012 vintage

Well executed stone fruit sour. Huge notes of apricot and lemon on the nose and mouth puckering fruit forward taste, minimal funk, quite acidic and dry finish. Cheers Cascade. (190 characters)

Poured this 2013 Project into a small Duvel glass. Not much head but a cap remained throughout. The body was a deep golden, and a little hazy.

The smell was of mild basement must and fruit. The fruitiness was not distinctly apricot and not exactly fresh smelling. Stale fruitiness.

The taste was puckering sour. Some sweet fruitiness and some balsamic vinegar-like character. Bright sourness with just enough sweetness to keep it interesting.

The mouthfeel was zesty and the body was medium.

I wish this one had more fresh fruit flavor and more discernible apricot. (572 characters)

Bottle acquired through a trade. 2011 Project

This was my first Cascade brew.

Fairly cloudy, pours an orange-golden hue not far off from ripe apricots themselves. Nice white head that hangs around longer than I'd expect - a fat ring around the rim and more remain until I finish the glass. Smells a lot like a gueuze... vinegar, mustiness, oak, and fruit. Not much of an apricot scent, faded and more of a vague sour fruits.
Very sour upfront. Not just the initial shock, but a second tartness in the aftertaste that is very much apricots. Constantly reminded of lambic/gueuze, maybe being an older vintage attributed to this but I am loving it. As my glass warms and my mouth gets accustomed to the sourness, more oak and apricots show up along with a vinious flavor. Not overly dry and well carbonated, makes me thirsty for more without raking my tongue. I'd be interested to taste a fresher bottle but this 2011 is right up my alley - everything I want in a fruited sour is here. Fantastic beer and a wonderful introduction to Cascade. (1,040 characters)

750ml bottle, 2013 project, poured into a Cascade snifter. The beer did gush a little bit when removing the cork, as expected with many Cascade beers.

The beer pours a hazy copper color, hues of orange and apricot, the beer is very cloudy so it's hard to find any activity in the glass, but a thick, white head appears quickly before fading away leaving some soapy film and a few spots of lace. The aroma is of juicy apricots, lacto funk, mild vinegar, sweet malt and some earthy fruit pit, rather simple but very enjoyable, plenty of fruit. The flavors match well, lots of apricot fruit, light lacto funk, almost a big yogurty with some earthy apricot pit, light vinegar and a big splash of rich malt. The mouthfeel is nice, very carbonated and lively, coats the mouth well, lightly abrasive but doesn't detract too much from the experience. The finish is crisp and lightly dry, but easy as the same time.

Verdict: A very nice wild ale from Cascade, perhaps a bit simple, but the balance is nice. Plenty of apricot as advertised, but aside from the bits of funk and malt, there isn't a whole lot else going on, that being said, this was extremely refreshing and very enjoyable to drink on a relaxing afternoon. (1,213 characters)

Looks like Cascade is back in NY for the first time in over a year!

A - the Apricot Ale pours like a gueuze, albeit with a darker, hazier, more orange amber. It’s sparkling effervescent with a robust champagne head.

S - It casts off the unripe apple sharpness one expects, but this funk is less abrasive than a traditional lambic. The nose is tempered not only with apricot, but also pear, banana and strawberry. It emits the sweet smell of candied dried fruit.

T -That candy carries over into the taste. You get that initial bracing tartness, but this immediately gives way to juicy passion fruit and lemon-drops. Still, the drink is wonderfully dry and refreshing, with medium body and a tantalizing savory note, like the salt on a margarita glass. All told, Cascade Apricot Ale is like liquid sweet-tart.

M - Medium bodied, but crisp, dry and refreshing, even as that sugary fruit boosts the ABV to 8.5%.

O - I've never fallen for a sour. While I can appreciate a good gueuze, I'm never in the mood for one. This might change that. I already want another. (1,067 characters)

750ml bottle split with no one since no one is around this evening.
8.5% abv

A: Poured into my night shift tulip a golden dark straw color with a one finger head, decent retention and good, ongoing, active carbonation. Much better head than I was expecting since most sours seem to miss the boat on this aspect. Several minutes later and the carbonation is still going. Great head, great legs, soapy lacing. What a great looking beer!

S: Very pleasant up front lactic acid aroma but not overwhelming. Very quickly the fruit shines through. Semi sweet, earth stone fruit nose. After several minutes I'm hard pressed to find anything but fruit and acid. Smell is very two-dimensional; not overly complex.

T: Oh that's damn good. I was expecting a lot more sour from this but it's very refreshing on this hot day before the summer solstice. Actually, this is the perfect beer to drink on the summer solstice. The lactic character is very present but almost plays a back seat to the apricots. Not too sweet, not too dry, very Goldilocks like thing going on here. This is definitely good, great even, but I wouldn't necessarily call it outstanding and it's far from perfect. I know that because of who this brewery is and how highly rated their beers are it's blasphemy to find holes in it but the taste is just missing something. It's very good but borderline lackluster. I guess the omnipresent apricots are really saving the overall taste score, even pushing it up a few notches because the lacking lactic acid is disappointing.

M: Mouth is really good on this one. Great carbonation overall, exceptional carbonation for the style, not too thin but not very heavy, again the Goldilocks effect here. Lots of balance. The what I could call 'subtle' lactic acid really enhances the mouth on this one too since it awakens the salivary glands just enough. I don't really think I could ask for anything different from the mouth.

O: Overall this is very solid. The perfect appearance and mouthfeel are going to garner a very high overall score but the smell will knock it down. I was expecting a little bit more out of this one. Cascade Blueberry is one of my most favorite brews and I think I had such high expectations for Apricot that it almost isn't fair to review it on my first time having it. During the early parts of this review I was sort of bashing it a bit because it didn't live up to the expectations but now that I've been drinking through more of it it is really growing on me. I'd definitely drink it again and will probably buy another one to try to have it in a less biased situation but I wouldn't see myself shelling out $30/bottle for it on a regular basis. In the end it misses the sourness I was expecting while wowing me with lots of fruit that isn't too sweet or dry. Great balance. Great beer. Kudos. (2,823 characters)

Beautiful deep blonde color; deep golden orange. Opaque. Rich one finger head when poured; foam laced the surface of the glass and beer the entire time I was drinking the beer. Delicious small; sweet and fruity with a slight sour finish. Taste matched the smell; sweet (but not too sweet) fruity taste with a slightly sour finish. Kind of a sweet and sour effect. Absolutely delicious. Nice medium plus body; smooth with lots of very light carbonation. Overall I found this beer to be outstanding. Definitely one of my favorites of all time. A - Looks like what it used to be; a blonde ale.

S - Wild flowers and apricot.

T - Not much funk due to using soley lactobacillus. Clean, crisp and refreshing. Apricot is fairly subtle. A little more sweetness and fruitiness would enhance this beer.

M - Fizziness is refreshing and beer is suitably substantial to carry its abv.

O - I was a little disappointed with this beer as it's so highly rated. The apricot character did not come through to the extent I'd have liked. (477 characters)

2012 Project

A: poured into a tulip to a light orange that is a little cloudy with a small white head that is quick to fade to a good sized collar around the edge of the glass
S: smells of sourness, apricots and some oak
T: taste is lactic sourness with a lot of apricot flavor that mixes with some oak and a hint of funk. swallow is more sourness and apricot flavor with a bit of vanilla
M: lighter side of medium in the mouth with effervescent carbonation that bristles on the tongue. The beer has a drying finish.
O: Delicious and fantastic. It's a very good beer with a lot of sourness and a huge fruit flavor. Very well done. (631 characters)

750 mL bottle tasted as part of a blind Better Beer Authority (BBA) tasting, initial 2011 vintage (before the long-aging process), poured into a large snifter glass and drank over 30 minutes.

A: 3/3 - misty golden-yellow, initial frothy white head settles into a one finger glass lacing, low clarity (cannot see through), moderate alcohol legs

S: 11/12 - a really complex and intense admixture of fruit - apricot, Meyer lemon, lime - and barnyard notes, no detectable hops or malts; no detectable flaws

T: 18/20 - on first sip, there is an intense slap of both fruit and funk; this develops into complex fruit flavors - apricot (of course), lemon, ripe pear, tangerine - admixed with tart, barnyard flavors; as the flavors develop, there was a mild malt and wheat character; more alcohol flavors; finishes very dry

M: 4/5 - high carbonation; obviously, this very complex, and, as a result, it's not easily quaffable

T: 9/10 - wow, again, having this as part of a blind BBA tasting (thanks to Richard Hartogs for the opportunity), this beer totally impressed me; I read on some other reviews that this is an accessible sour, and I totally disagree with that - it's an intensely complex amalgamation of fruit and funk that could be very off-putting to those who don't have experience with sours; my only complaint is the acid brash that I start to experience after drinking too much; in short, this is one of the best American Wild Ales, and, as part of the tasting, I compared it to Cantilllon's Fou' Founne - high praise indeed and definitely recommended!

Hazy platinum with no head.
Apricot fruit roll-up on the nose with a touch of white vinegar.
JuicyFruit, bright orchard fruit, a touch of funk, lemon zest and a bit of chalk.
Bracing fresh fruity finish and white spice linger.

Notes from a bottleshare last week (thanks Luke!). Of note was a slight bit of mold at the bottom of the cork. We feared oxidization but there weren't any perceptible oxidized flavors, but looking through reviews, I don't think this tasted like it should have.

APPEARANCE: A clear, straw-colored pour with a bright white head.

AROMA: Tart funk complemented by a floral, light-fruitiness. Not a ton of apricot, but a little is there. I also get some hay and vinegary sauerkraut.

TASTE: The apricot wasn't overly strong on the nose, but it really comes through in the taste. Very tart, with subsequent yeasty funk. Hints of citrus. The sauerkraut is stronger here than it was in the aroma, but still not overbearing.

MOUTHFEEL: Tart and effervescent, with lingering acidity. Also a little bit astringent. Medium-dry finish.

OVERALL: This was very good, but I feel it wasn't at it's best. The presence of mold under the cap is probably the culprit behind the sauerkraut taste/smell. I'll have to give this one another try sometime to see if there's much difference.

Poured as part of the Cascade flight at Provisions. Poured out of a 750ml bottle into a 9oz tulip glass. While I eagerly await the chance to try Fou Foune, this will have to do for now.

Amber orange in color, with some mildly persevering cloudiness and sediment at the edges. Head retention is decent (especially given the ABV), showcasing a frothy bone white head that eventually dissipates (almost as quickly as the kriek, although not quite as fast).

Another victorious fruit infusion at the aroma, as indicated by the bright showcasing of tart stone fruit, dusty, lightly sweet oak, and a rustic caramel and hop backbone that brings forward the properties that remind me that I am, indeed, drinking a beer here. Slightly under-ripe apricots come at full force here, along with notes of peaches and melon. Earthy, but also filled with nicely floral notes of white orchids, to say the very least. This may also be in part from the sweetness enhanced by the oak, imparting light vanilla and baking soda. Not very complex in terms of showcasing a variety of different flavors, but extremely satisfying.

One sip and I'm instantly enamored - I've always talked about notes of apricots in beers before, but from now on I'm going to be hesitant about using such a fruit description. As found here, it is *extremely* distinct in the realm of stone fruit. Tart, dried, and also green, to an extent, notes of soured apricots explode at the front of the palate, in the same vein that the extremely addicting dried apricot fruit treats do. Juicy, acidic, and filled with a good amount of fruit must. Follows with dried green melons, white peaches, and tons of well balanced floral notes. The oak comes in slightly more subtle but displays the same baking spices and light vanilla as before, alongside a light tobacco toasted element. Super mouth puckering, nevertheless, with a sensation of perhaps biting into a highly under-ripened apricot. Still, very well carbonated, and never loses its gas. I'm honestly impressed that this is so high in alcohol. It has to be one of the most dangerous sours on the market, as a result (and so flavorful!).

This is delicious stuff yet again from Cascade, with a great take on a type of sour that more of the big guys that make these kinds of beers right should experiment with. There's something really appropriate about using apricots for sour beers - its naturally acidic, dry, and tart character melds so naturally at hand. I'm happy to have another bottle on hand that I've held onto since July. I should consider cracking it open soon before the highlighted fruit character fades away! (2,624 characters)

Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of huge tart green apple, apricot, lemon, raspberry, white wine, oak, clove, white vinegar, leather, hay, straw, musty funk, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with great balance and complexity of tart fruitiness, oak, and funky/acidic yeast ester notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart green apple, apricot, lemon, raspberry, white wine, white vinegar, oak, clove, hay, straw, pepper, leather, musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Big fruity acidic sourness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour green apple, apricot, lemon, raspberry, white wine, white vinegar, oak, clove, musty funk, hay, straw, leather, pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible balance and complexity of tart/sour yeast ester, fruit, and oak barrel flavors; with a good fruit/sourness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very acidic, crisp, and fairly smooth mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding fruited sour ale! Amazing complexity and balance of apricot fruit with fruity/sour yeast ester and oak barrel flavors; and quite smooth to sip on even with the big acidity. A-The brew has a pure white head with pretty decent retention for a high-ABV sour beer...dense and puffy. The beer is light, light golden in color and surprisingly clear.

S-The aroma is huge on the apricot as you might expect. It is pure and intense. The sour factor is pretty high, too. The juicy tart apricot flavor combines with a musty, dusty peach flavor and some white wine. Really nice.

T-The taste is also pure, unadulterated apricot. It is tart and semi-dry with a hint of juicy sweetness. There is a nice dry and tart wine-oak character in there, but mostly it is juicy apricot.

M-The feel is light to medium in body with a spritzy carbonation that is fine and assertive.

O-This is a great fruit-forward beer. I don't think it packs the complexity of a Fou Foune, but it certainly beats out many other lesser imitations. The apricot flavor is pure and authentic tasting and the balance of fruit and sour is almost perfect. Another well-done sour by Cascade. (1,014 characters)
