Drank from a 750 ml/1 pt. 9.4 fl. oz. corked and caged bottle
2009 project
Served in a tulip

The bottle opened with a loud pop and the beer poured a deep, dark crimson-mahogany color. A small, light tan cap of bubbly froth topped the liquid. Good lasting strength on the head. Patchy drops of lacing trickled down sides of glass.

The aroma was outstanding. Super tart and moderately funky with a pleasant, fruity sweetness. Sour cherries and raspberries were most apparent. Red wine notes also came through strong. Seeing as the beer was first aged in oak with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes then later blended with red ales that had been aged in Port and Pinot Noir barrels, this came as no surprise. Lots of balsamic vinegar and lactic acid. Strong notes of oak developed as the beer warmed.

The flavor profile was quite interesting as well. Similar to the nose in many regards, yet a bit more tart and dry. Sweet-ish malts were noticeable up front. Tart cherries were detectible, though more so in the aroma. Balsamic vinegar and lactic acid notes appeared in the center. Like the nose, the flavor profile had a strong red wine-like quality. Touch of brett. Lots of oak. The oakiness carried into the crisp, dry and tannic finish. Slight metallic notes were detectible as well.

The mouthfeel was rich and frothy with an aggressive, large bubbled effervescence. As the beer sat, the carbonation settled down a bit and the liquid turned smoother and creamier.

Overall, this is a remarkably interesting and eminently drinkable beer. Definitely one of the best American wild ales that I have sampled to date. Do whatever you can to get your hands on the 2009 (original) vintage.

750ml poured into a snifter.

A: Brownish in color with light red hints. One and a half finger tan head with alright retention and hardly no lacing.

S: Big tart cherries, light sour apples. Some wine qualities. Light oak. Some funkiness.

T: A touch sweet to start. Then huge tart cherries with a light sour apple flavor. Get some light wine and oak.

M: Light body. Higher carbonation. Crisp and very dry.

O: Very good sour. Very tart. Alcohol is non existent, except when your friend won't drink his half and you have to drink the whole thing.

Reviewed from notes.
shared by Dunt (or the BA formerly known as Dunt)

Murky hazy brownish muddy reddish color.

Awesome nose-- sour cherries, raspberries, with bigtime oak and earth notes. Definately some funk in there too-- and not bright sunshiney day hay funk-- a deep ominous scary earthy funk that fucking rocks.

All those notes translate beautifully to the taste. Some what sweet up front that leads into a great sour/tart note at the back end.

The body is quite good too-- good firm carbonation, smooth medium/light body with a solid cheek-puckering sourness.

Really quite good. This is my favorite from Cascade-- aside from Apricot, of course!

A - Pours a dark brown that's pretty mirky and has a tan head which about 1.5 fingers. Some lacing is evident and a bubbly ring stays behind as well with some fizz bubble here and there. Really nice to look at.

S - Fruity tartness, dark fruit such as plums or raisins. A nice meld of both tart and sweet here. Neither overpowers the other in terms of nose, which makes for a nice combo. I don't get a lot of oak notes here even though it was barrel-aged for quite some time.

T - Tastes like it smells. A mix of sour apples, cherries, lemon citrus, along with some sweet raisins and plums. There are some oak notes here that also contribute to the overall balance of this beer. Really a great meld of flavors.

M - A little too much carbonation for me. The finish isn't as dry as I expected but that doesn't bother me at all.

D - Easy to drink and very tasty.

O - Definitely ordering more of these, very good

A; poured a brownish red in color with a thin head that left a little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: I definitely was able to get a whiff of the pinot nior grapes which was accompanied with a good amount of wine barrel character, a tad of brett, some vinegar notes and a nice aroma of oak.

T: The pinot nior grapes blended quite well with the vinegar wine barrel flavors with good oaky accentss and nice cherry notes that gave it a nice amount of sweetness.

M: the brew was medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a sweet, fruity, bretty funky, oaky, and tart finish.

D: this brew was just drinking fantastic and have to say it is one of my favorite blends from the cascade brewery. Good job!!
