A: Blood red with a purplish hue when held to the light. Thin off-white that maintained form for some time. Soapy whisps of lacing here and there.

S: Butter and blackberry jelly notes dominate. As the beer opened up there were hints of red wine (cabernet sauvignon in particular). With time the diacetyl notes overwhelmed and ultimately distracted from the enjoyment.

T: The blackberry notes start to come out in the flavor. Butter fades away, but is still noticable. Light lemony acidity. Some vinous notes and wheat toward the back end.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation levels. Light acidity throughout. Soft finish.

O: Ultimately the diacetyl was unavoidable and that impaired my enjoyment of what could have been a truly interesting beer.

Sampled January 2010
A solid, but softish pour from the growler yields a purple-pink stained, off-white colored head that is about a fat-finger in thickness. The beer is a rich purple, red-amber hue (almost like a plum) that shows a brilliantly clear, rich, cranberry red hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of musty Brettanomyces followed by a light tarrtness and a very soft berry like fruitiness. My second draught of the aroma has me noticing more of the berry notes mixed with some spicy and tannic oak aromatics; much like a fruit forward red wine in fact. There is perhaps a hint of butter here, but it is not enough for me to tell if it is from the oak, or from some diacetyl.

Quite a bit more tart tasting than I was expecting, there is a significant berry flavor to this as well; both produce a really nice tart berry note. There is lots of carbonic fizz to this beer; it helps to lighten up this beer as there is still a fair amount of body left (at least when compared to sour beers). This isn't bone dry either as there is just a hint of sweetness left that accentuates the fruitiness a fair amount. This isn't heavy on the funk or Brettanomyces character as there is only a touch of up front mustiness and this has a soft'ish finish that sees some noticeable musky, barnyard Brettanomyces character that couples with some toasted oak flavors and light tannic astringency. This is actually quite a nicely balanced brew; the up front fruit and sourness is balanced nicely by the light funkiness and oak character in the finish..

At times this can actually have a fair amount of sweetness to it; especially after not having taken a sip of it recently. I like that there seems to be a complex, tannic berry skin flavor here that conveys much of the fruitiness of the blackberries. A summary sentence; Beatiful pale pink-purple head, with a brilliantly clear purple tinged body, the beer is a great balanced expression of tart-sweet berry, sour lactic acid, tannic, often lightly astringent oak and softly musty funkiness. Beautifully drinkabl, and despite the near-heresy, this has the faint sweetness that I wish New Glarus would aim for.

Draft at the Barrel House into a branded stubby chalice, the beer is a ruby-red color with pinkish head. Blackberries upfront with lots of musty, tart, and earthy play. Nice oak presence. Good push-pull between sweet and tart. Moderate body and carbonation. Very well put together.

Poured on-tap in a 2oz taster at Cascade. Reviewed from notes. Wish I had more to go on, the notes might be scarce.

A- Half-finger white head, ringed white lacing. Burgundy with nice clarity.

S- Berry, sour and tart, some barrel aged scents, maybe pinot noir. Not picking up blackberry.

T- Sour with barrel aged flavors. Great flavor on this one.

M- Some light carbonation and wine-feel.

O- Tasty, subtle sour.

poured from tap. Pours a clear red color with a nice foamy head.

Very floral aromatics with some roses, violets, cherries, currants and a touch of fresh picked berries.

This has an excellent medium feel along with nice tart flavors of cherries, violets, roses and some currants.

A very tasty sour. Nice and tart without being overtly sour and more of the berry kick.

Dark violet in color with a very small dark khaki colored head. This leaves small dots of lace down the glass. Very pretty and unique color. I haven't seen many beers that look like this.

The aroma has quite a bit of authentic blackberry character, along with nice sour character, and distinct oak. This is complete, bright, and powerfully aromatic. Wonderful.

This is a marvelous blackberry sour. There is lots of juicy, bright, vibrant, authentic blackberry flavor, lots of acidic sour character, and distinct barrel. This is fantastic. I couldn't imagine a much better blackberry beer/sour.

Medium bodied with high carbonation. Perfectly appropriate.

Simply fantastic. This was everything I'd hoped for.

First had: on tap at Cascade, Portland, OR

Poured a cherry brown color with a big fluff of pinkish head. Scents of cherry, blackberry, and blueberry; moderately musty. Taste is full of berry goodness, tart and sour, with kind of a wheat beer acid profile, and a bit of funk as was detected in the nose. Medium-bodied, and a little harsh in the aftertaste, but very nice overall.

On tap @ the Cascade Brewing Barrel House (Portland, OR) on 9/4/11. Served in a teardrop goblet.

Pours a deep clear ruby (almost a cranberry color), with a ½ finger of creamy looking pink-hued head. This retains with some foamy richness around the edges, leaving back a rich cascade of lace that quickly slides down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells a bit musty on top, before giving way to tart berries and some dark fruit as well. There is a touch of background sweetness as well but its’ that berry tartness that is driving this for the most part.

The taste starts with fresh and tart feeling fruit, with a darker berry presence along the back. There isn’t a whole lot of sweetness here, with the job of balancing that tartness out seeming to fall mostly with the fruit here. But I’m overall digging the bright and flavorful berry tartness of this, as it runs the whole way through the profile and then lingers in the finish with a memorable deep dryness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slicker feeling up front, with a more sharp and lively carbonation then taking over. For 8% ABV, this is pretty darn smooth.

This was another really accessible sour beer from Cascade. I didn’t really find to be very acidic feeling at all. Just a whole lot of fresh and clean tart berry flavors that popped on the palate. This was enjoyable.

This was one of the most amazing, and flavorful, sours I have had. The taste is of semi ripe blackberries, which get back up by some sweetness from the malt. On the nose there is a lot of sweet ripe blackberry, and some slight sourness. This beer was quite amazing, it was very close to almost drinking a blackberry. I was quite impressed with this beer, probably one of the best sours I have had to date.

Poured from tap at Cascade Barrel House.

Another winner from Cascade. This sour ale is all about the sour and dark fruit. Lots of berry on the nose, a hint of cherry, and that funky sour lacto coming off strongly.

On the palate the fruit dominates. Black cheery, blackberry, currant, with a hint of flowers and lots of tart yeast.

Very balanced and good, viscous texture. Alcohol kept in check by the intense flavors. Lots of acidity on the finish to round things out.

Overall a great sour, just a little short on the finish.

appearance: served in a tulip, vivid pinkish ruby body, bright pink foam head. very pretty beer - caught me offguard based on what i knew about this beer

smell: fresh NW berries, tart blackberry, yeast, cherry

taste: another nice offering from cascade - lush tart berries, funk, yeast, tart cherry, grassy and fresh. no clue where the 8% abv is hiding but it almost seems like a misprint.

mouthfeel: light, tart, fresh

On tap at Malt and Vine.

Pours: Deep, dark ruby red with a hint of purple. A slightly pink head lifts itself an inch above the beer and settles down around the glasses edge.

Nose: Blackberry, dark cherry, slight vanilla, dry oak, lactic acid and red wine tannins.

Taste: Bright, clean and tart blackberry and dark cherry initially that turns into a lactic and tannic red wine/oak blend. The backend of this beer is slightly lactic, slightly oaky and even has a bit of vanilla mixed in.

Mouthfeel: Slightly carbonated and slightly creamy...perfect for the style. I enjoyed the somewhat lively bubbles and the velvety mouthfeel of this great sour.

Overall: Pretty fantastic...wish I could buy a bottle. This is better than the Kriek (more well balanced) but not as great as the Apricot IMO. I really would seek this out again...another awesome offering from Cascade (my favorite sour producer).

On tap at the Barrel House, 2011 version. Strangely, the menu did not list Nightfall blackberries as being used.

A beautiful clear ruby red with a thin, pink-tinged white head with decent retention, this beer is attractive. The nose is a glorious mix of blackberries and a prominent berry tartness. A mild cocoa character is present, along with a fruity red wine character, moderately juicy. Rose water rounds out the nose. The palate opens with a clean, lactic tartness, moderate oak and with a clean, fresh, fruity berry character. There's a bend of blackberries and dark cherries here. The sourness is clean and crisp. Light in body and moderately carbonated, this beer finishes with a blend of lactic tartness, mild barrel character and moderate berry sweetness. Excellent stuff.

Poured a hazy ruby into a pint glass with a thin film of white head. The aroma isn't too strong, just a hint of slightly tart berry juice.

Moderate carbonation and a light mouthfeel. Not overly puckering with some mild berry sourness up front followed by a slightly sweeter blackberry presence on the finish.

Really nicely balanced and very easy-drinking despite the sour character. Higher ABV almost completely hidden.

Pours a heavy, flat, crimson ruby color. Impressive. Some bubbles would be nice.

Smells, and tastes, like sour, puckering fruit. This is a straight-forward acid bomb of a fruit sour. It showcases the base ingredient well, but could use a bit more depth. No funk, just straightforward sweet and sour berry tones. Quite drinkable, very refreshing, but plurs the line between fruit juice and beer. Wait, it's 8 percent? EGADS I WOULD DRINK THIS UNTIL I DIE!

Completely flat. LIke a fruit juice.

On tap at the Barrel house.

A - It's called nightfall, but it was a bright red, with a whitish-pink head. Great retention and some lacing left on the glass.

S - Not much funk, or blackberry tartness coming off this, but there is some fruit tones. If I didn't know what it was, I would have never guessed Blackberry.

T - Not too sour or tart, Surprised that it wasn't more sweet here. Very nice balance here.

D - Good carbonation and fizz.

O - I enjoyed this one. Not what I was expecting, but I wasn't dissapointed either.

It smells very acidic. I get a bit of a blackberry earthy smell as well. There is a slight oaky smell as well.

It tastes initially very acid/ sour. I get a nice fruity blackberry flavor that is pretty earthy. There is a bit of an oaky flavor to the beer as well.

The carbonation is moderate. There is a crisp mouthfeel to the beer.

Sampled today at the Cascade Barrel House, this arrived in a mini snifter. We're looking at raspberry like puree colored beer with a spotty white cap and lacing.

The aroma is full of sour patch kids and little vanilla.

Tastes like puckering under ripe blackberries and like sucking on a lemon. Wowee tart!

Mouthfeel is thin and crisp.

Drinkability is Cascade signature too high! Way to easy to swig.

Draft for Sourfest 2009 at Brouwer's for SBW.

Pours a dark purple with a pink head. Floral hop aroma with berry undertones. Unfortunately, this was incredibly sour, but you could still pick up some blackberry and current flavors as well as some nice hops.

Ultimately, good flavor, but a bit too sour that leaves my mouth puckering. Infinitely better than many sours out there, but not one of Cascade's best offerings

Poured into a tulip glass. Clear pink, with a big fizzy head, it almost looks like a sparkling rose. It smells of berries, fruits and funk. This beer has a lot of fruit flavor, but a lot more tartness, this is perhaps the driest tasting berry beer I have ever had. My only Issue is the deeper I get into the glass the more I get an off brett flavor of plastic and bandaids. The beer is very fizzy almost like a champagne and it goes down well.

A: The pour is a dark reddish, purple in the glass with a nice pink foam on top.

S: The nose is, unfortunately, somewhat buttery which covers up the tartness and acidity. The blackberries are there, but not as prominent as I would have thought.

T: Luckily, there is some improvement in the flavor with a nice lactic tartness which works very nicely with the sweet blackberry flavor. There is a mustiness and a mild funk which is very pleasing.

M: A lighter bodied beer with a moderate level of carbonation and a somewhat dry finish.

D: A good beer, for sure, but perhaps I was expecting more. The nose was a bit off-putting, but the flavors made up for it.
