First had: on tap at Cascade, Portland, OR

Poured a reddish-brown color with a small off-white head that receded to a thin ringlet. Light aroma of sweet malts, light spice, and vegetal hops. Taste was decent, but a bit bland overall, like a so-so brown ale, with some spices thrown in the mix. Bitter hops and a slight alcohol warmth come in for a decently dry finish. Medium-bodied, and moderately drinkable, but I wasn't too crazy about it.

Draught pint at the brewpub, Frostkiller is a ruddy brown with a small off-white head leaving nice, foamy lace.

Smell is fragrant herbal and pot-like hops, with some caramel as it warms.

Taste is very nice. Big chocolate malty brown ale backbone with strong, but not overwhelming, pungent hop flavor with tempered bitterness. Tasty, clean alcohol in spite of being even stronger then advertised from what I understand, with some nice sour citrus notes from the hops as well.

Mouthfeel is slick, oily, medium bodied, with very creamy carbonation.

Drinkability is dangerous as hell. This was a very tasty, smooth strong ale with a great freshness to it. I have to wonder if it's a different batch the red reviewed a little over two weeks ago, as the disparity in our impressions is so extreme...

A red-brown ale (more reddish than brown) with indifferent lace and an odd off-smell that's hard to define. The beer is grainy with a forward spicy bitterness but otherwise has a lax malt structure and stagnant hops.

I can't relate to this beer as there's little to latch onto. The hops are buried and the malts are weak. It's a glass of indifferent bitter spice that just doesn't work for me.

On tap at Raccoon Lodge 1.17.10 poured into Teardrop glass.

Clear amber body, 1 finger light tan head, average dissipation and lacing. A bit spicy in the nose, nutmeg, coriander, and a hint of cinnamon. Same flavor profile as nose with a hint of vanilla, probably from barrel aging. Smooth mouthfeel with a dry finish. Very drinkable for this high of an ABV. One of the highlights of the day, hope they put this on at next year's Holiday Ale Festival, along with the absolutely world class Sang Noir. Highly recommended, especially on a dreary, wet Portland afternoon.
