Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

"This NW style sour blends tripels and strong blondes that were lacticly fermented and aged more than a year with blackberries in oak. We then did a secondary inoculation with a recently isolated plumbers strain of Brett called Beckamoyces Aasskraquii. Some sour cherries were blended in to give this beer some pucker. This is a rare beer; once it's gone, it's gone. "

A: Soapy thin white head on top of a clear tupelo body. Spotty lacing looks nice. 3.5/5

S: Ahhh... The lightly funky smell of brett and mold that is unexpected in every other Cascade beer shows up here. Lemon zest, green apple skin, and grape seed are a welcome addition to the wet wood. 3.5/5

T: I can't help but pick up some acetone in the taste and when I exhale after a sip. That's not a good thing. Generic moderate sourness and cheap white vinegar aren't helping. I've gotta say this beer is getting derailed quick at this point. 1.5/5

M: Moderate body, appropriate carbonation, I wish it finished a little cleaner. It doesn't help that the taste isn't impressing me much. 2/5

D: I'm just not all that wowed with this beer. I never had it fresh so I'm not sure if its just not aging gracefully or if there's just something I missed. This might just be my least favorite Cascade beer to date. 2/5

On draught at the barrel house, served in a small chalice, Beck Berry is a murky blood orangish brown with a big bubbled collar that leaves scattered foam.

Smell is sweet tarts and lots of barnyard, dirty.

Taste is very sweet at first, again, big sweet tarts, which I like, but then it transitions to the strong bite of the brett, that really comes off as being very grainy. I had this when it was first tapped from on of the barrels, and the brett wasn't nearly as pronounced, which I preferred. No lacto, I'm surprised they could resist! The first part of the taste is great, the lingering aftertaste no so much. Swishing it around, I get a little fusel alcohol, although the pucker from the berries makes that difficult.

Mouthfeel is slick, almost oily, and medium-light bodied.

Drinkability is pretty good, the base blackberry beer is good. The brett inoculation of this unique strain is not one I care for.

On tap in a chalice at the Barrel House on 3/9/11

Way deep amber, almost copper. Cloudy. Poured a thin, bubbly collar of a head. No retention, though there are a few specks of lace.

The aroma is well-adjusted and of tart fruitiness. Cherries and assorted berries. The description indicates blackberries but they don't distinctly stand out. Hints of the floral and earthy. Touch of lactic and brett funk. Blended complexity.

The palate is dry throughout. Cherries impart tanginess but aren't overly tart. Dark berry tones. Laid back lactic notions. Some mid-section funk, but not too much. Dried malt finish.

The beer is quick to leave the tongue after giving it a puckered kick. Moderately high carbonation seems appropriate. Finishes quick, tart and dry.

I found it enjoyable and easy to drink. Plenty tasty without being a palate killer.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ

A: The beer pours an amber color with a slightly off-white head.

S: There is a strong lactic note up front which gives it a nice tartness. The berries are there, but it is not quite as strong in terms of raspberries as I expected, a little bit of blackberry in there too. Some oak, lemon, light vanilla, and a touch of straw are also there.

T: Oak flavors are a bit more prominent than expected and there's some definite vanilla flavor to it. As with the aroma, there are some berry notes to it, but I wouldn't necessarily think this was a raspberry beer.. A mild vinegar note as well as some lemon peel and straw.

M: The body is medium with medium carbonation.

O: Like many Cascade sours, this was good, but it didn't blow me away.

Not the best periodic beer they brew up, but a sure good thing.

Really this is all about the cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors. There is an eye popping level of sour yeasts and esthers here. Really intense, almost makes the eyes water. Pretty good texture and balance, the acidity really evens out the sweet-ish fruit flavors on the finish.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours a dark amber with a medium white head, nice thick lace.

S: Sweet berry, some earth, leather, Bretty.

T: Black raspberries, boysenberries, I get a very fruity introduction. As the glass goes on, I get a lot more Brett character, earth and mushrooms in the background. Never super funky, but complex.

M: A tad overcarbonated, frothy, medium acid.

O: A fun beer to try, I liked the secondary flavours a lot.

Oh the dear sweet Barrel House!
Only these guys would find a flaw and turn into something beautiful. The tasting required to pick up on these brett-infected barrels boggles my mind. This would've been one of Hercules's labors were he to live in this modern age.
Brownish red and muddy. Much sediment.
Nice light sour and tart blackberries, some barnyard funk, a little bit of that sour cherry. All the flavors here accumulate into a nice little sum of fruity funk.
Pretty wonderful, and a unique experience to have a brett-infused beer here at the barrel house. I want more of this, but here at the Barrel House, there is just too much to try.
Maybe it'll still be around next time. If not, I look forward to their next small infection and to what they will do with that one.

Appears solid red with a small off-white head.

It smells vinegary and acidic. There
Is a slight caramel and berry smell. I also get a bit of an orange and cherry smell.

There is a nice wine oaky flavor to the beer, a nice tart berry flavor, a pleasant earthiness, a slight herbal flavor. There is a bit of tart cherry flavor to the beer as well. There is also a nice funky leathery flavor as well. A funky sourness lingers on the palate for a sizeable amount of time. There is quite a bit of a vinegary sourness to this beer.

The carbonation is around medium.

The drinkability is around average for the style it drinks easy but due to the sourness and richness of the ale one glass is enough for me.

Overall a nice unique ale.

On tap at Cascade Barrel House 10.19.2010, $6 for teardrop glass, a bargain for this quality Brett infused one-off.

1/2 finger white head, quick dissipation, ring of head retained around edge of glass. Orangish/pinkish red body. Blackberries and sour cherries featured prominently in the nose. Taste is more blackberry than cherry, more tart than sour, nicely balanced. Medium light mouthfeel, noticeable effervescence, a bit sticky. Definite brett influence may effect drinkability for those unintiated to AWAs. Not my favorite Cascade offering, but this certainly had a very unique flavor profile. Worth checking out while it's available.

On Tap

Beachwood BBQ
Seal Beach, CA

Dark amber with a thin white head. Dots of lacing down the glass.

Stinging sour aroma initially, along with sweet cherries and muted blackberries. The aroma is not quite as bright as the best within this style, but what's here is very, very good.

Sweet and tart cherries, plenty of biting sourness, wood, earth, and brick provide a rich balance. Alcohol is hardly detectable. Delicious stuff.

Thin to medium bodied and plenty of carbonation.

This is one of my absolute favorites from Cascade. This is a delicious blackberry/cherry sour--as NoSignsOfPain put it, "It's kind of like a more mild Supplication."

On tap at the barrel room today. This is a rarity from Cascade, a brett infected wild ale.

The beer pours a luscious looking dark honey color with good head retention and minimal lacing. I get a huge sour funk aroma on the nose, with some underlying lemon and lime as well. Considering the amount of sour funk, I was surprised by the flavor profile. The beer starts off with some sweet honey and vanilla, coupled with considerable fruit (pear, apple and cherry). However, the moderately sweet fruit is gently pushed aside by the sour funk, though it's thankfully not overdone. The balance in this beer is amazing... there's just enough sour funk to counter and balance the sweet fruit in this beer. The beer has almost a tingling, sour finish to it. The beer is very soft and almost creamy on the palate, with a long, lingering finish. As is typical with Cascade sours, the 8% abv. is almost completely undetectable (making drinkability pretty good).

Another impressive offering from Cascade.

Dirty and dark orange colored beer, I was expecting this to be a reddish hue, but no, more orange and brown. Almost zero to thin head develops.

Aroma was nice and tart, fruity, I don't know what a beck berry is though, so take that for what its worth. Some oak, dark fruit, cherry with sour aroma.

Taste, very sour, good job, cherry flavor comes out a lot in this, with some blackberry maybe, which would be the first time something like that was actually enjoyable, very enjoyable in fact. Really good pucker factor. Seems to be predominantly a cranberry, blackberry and sour cherry presence. One of my more favorite Cascade offerings.

Had this at Beachwood BBQ's sourfest.

on-tap at the Cascade Barrel House, 8oz. pour into snifter.

It has a honey and rose-hued body with a wispy white head.

The aroma is predominately of sour Brett and fruit notes, which follows through into the taste. I was quite pleased to be able to detect some of the sweet blackberry fruit notes coming through the fairly strong sour Brett and sour cherry profile.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft and smooth carbonation.
This beer is very drinkable and well balanced. I really enjoyed the use of the strain of Brett, or Beck as it gave a quite enjoyable complexity. It is unfortunate that this seems to be a one time beer. I really hope they continue to work with various Brett strains.

Had a glass of this on tap at the Barrel Room.

A. dark gold in color. very nice head on this thing. looks nice in the glass.

S. It's nice to see Cascade using Brett finally. The smell is wonderful on this one. Lots of funky sourness in the nose. More brett.

T. Interestingly delicious. Pears, sour tartness, honey, vanilla, a touch of spice, sour cherries and other dark berries. Lots of goodness.

M. Great mouthfeel on the finish. A great rhythm between the sourness and sweet of the fruit.

D. Loved this one. I hope Cascade continues to use Brett in their beers. Always a fan.
