Served live from the barrel on cask at the Barrel House yesterday, though labeled as Pre-Bourbonic. It sounds the same, though - 100% bourbon barrel aged Bourbonic, but this version sat in barrels for only 6 months unlike the other reviews prior to mine.

Clear dark brown with mahogany highlights, this beer is capped with a thin, bubbly light brown head. The nose is fantastic. Bourbon, vanilla, leather, oak and wine are all present. A mild lactic sourness is present. This is one of those few Cascade beers where the lack of funk actually works to the beers' advantage. The palate opens with roast, bourbon, Belgian yeast spices, vanilla, mild lemon peel and lactic sourness. Oak lingers on the finish with bourbon and vanilla. Mild roast, mild licorice characteristics are present. Super complex, this beer is medium-full in body, lightly carbonated (another pleasant change) and has an excellent finish with bourbon, vanilla, dark fruit and a light lactic sourness. A fantastic treat, highly recommended.

This is unblended Bourbonic that is aged in makers mark whiskey barrels for two years. It was served "fresh from the barrel".

It appears pitch black with a sizable dark brown/tan head.

It smells acidic, slightly berry and cherry like. There is an oaky and bourbon smell to the ale as well.

It tastes initially very sour and acidic. There are notes of tart cherries and a strong vanilla oaky flavor. There is a bit of heat from the bourbon and a little bit of sweetness from the bourbon as well. There is a nice earthy character to the beer as well. For the alcohol percentage of the beer it is very smooth and the flavors of the beer go great with each other. The high alcohol of the beer is not apparent.

The carbonation is quite low. The carbonation is very smooth and complements the flavor of the beer.

For being so high in alcohol this is insanely drinkable. It goes down really smooth as it is quite balanced. The balance between the vanilla bourbon quality and the sour lactic acid quality of the beer is really nice.

Overall this is a fantastic beer. I really cannot see any flaws in this beer. I am glad I had a chance to try this as the bartender told me that he does not think that this beer will be on again.

Served "live from the barrel" at the Cascade Barrel House. Apparently it is an unblended burbonic plague that was aged in Maker's Mark barrels for a year or two.

Appearance - Black as night with a nice light brown head that lingered for a while. When put up to the light nice ruby highlights can be seen around the edges.

Smell - Smells like a big bourbony stout like BCBVS mixed with a wild ale. Really funky, but definitely sparks some curiosity because I for one have never experienced this type of aroma from a beer with such a dark appearance.

Taste - oh wow, it's absolutely incredible! Mixes my two favorite styles of stout and wild ales with deft precision. Some tartness up front, but immediately backed up with dark fruits, cherries, and vanilla from the stout part of the profile. Definitely a contestant for favorite beer ever.

Mouthfeel - low in carbonation, but it is so velvety smooth it's almost like angels are pouring liquid silk down your throat. It's that good.

Drinkability - this one is really dangerous because there really is no alcohol presence to speak of in this beer. But at 13%, you really notice when you stand up. I had two of these on the night that the barrel was tapped, and when I stood up to leave I immediately knew that I wasn't going anywhere. As a result I sat myself back down and ordered some food haha.

This beer was so good that over the week and a half that it was on tap I visited the barrel house 5 times specifically for that beer.

Truly a sublime experience.

Rich, smoky, and well-balanced are three terms that immediately come to mind. The aftertaste lingers and rolls with bourbon, sour, vanilla, and smoke combining and dancing on the palate.

13.5%. You only notice when you go to stand up, but this beer is serious.

I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to drink this concoction and I hope they let us do it again!

Cascade is the best!
