Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: barleywinefiend on 12-12-2011

This NW style sour wheat ale was barrel aged for up to 12 months with cranberries, orange peel and cinnamon. Soft aromas of cranberries and light floral notes start this beer off. Tart, dry notes of sweet cranberries with hints of wild strawberries on the palate give way to a pronounced dryness and a lingering finish of cranberries and spice.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy red body. White head. Good retention.

Smell - Bubble gum. Some fuzziness. Like alpaca wool left out in the rain. Berry aroma.

Taste - Berry. Grainy. Bubble gummy again. Wheaty. Mildly sour.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Well carbonated.

Overall - Weird. And not very good.

The second Cascade sour I've had that I didn't enjoy (the other being Vine). A lot of tartness from the Cranberry but I didn't enjoy the flavors from it. That said, I think canned Cranberry sauce is better than fresh, so maybe I just don't like Cranberry.

Murky rosy color. Small-ish head. Some yeast sediment. Smell is bretty and vaguely fruity. Moderate sourness. Subtle berry notes. OK. Not worth the money, though.

A: Poured a nice pinkish cranberry color with good carbonation leaving a nice white cap

S: Nice but subtle cranberry and a light booze sting

T: Starts out with an immediate cranverry tastem light booze, sour tartness but the cranberry is not as prominent as I expected.

M: Big carbonation, medium body

O: Not to shabby

Poured a ruddy, hazy red with two fingers of off-white head. Relatively mild aroma of tart cranberry.

Moderate carbonation and a full, smooth mouthfeel. Cranberry up front with a wheaty backbone and a slight tartness on the tail end. Less sour that expected; the tartness is more an undercurrent and the fruit and malt comes through a little more.

Nice overall, but not as impressive as many other Cascade brews.

2014 project. 8.2% ABV

750 ml bottle poured into a wine glass

Appearance: Pours a murky dark pink, or light red/orange color with about a finger of an off white head that settles to a thick ring. Body is hazy but translucent.

Smell: Funk (more than most Cascades), hay, cranberries, strawberries, damp wood with some hints of citrus and vanilla.

Taste: Tart cranberry juice, citrus, hay and wheat. Some spices , vanilla and lacto come through in the finish. Sourness is medium.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with somewhat of a creamy mouthfeel, but medium/high aggressive carbonation.

Overall: Another good one from Cascade. Not one of their best beers but still worth picking up.

On tap at Cascade Brewing Barrelhouse.

Pours a lighter pink-red body, one finger white head, fair retention, not much lacing. Smells of cranberries and not a whole lot else aside from oak. Flavour is cranberries, a bit of oak and citrus. No cinnamon to be found. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied, dry, not much of the mentioned spices to be found. Overall, a bit bland, but not too bad as it is a nice expression of cranberry in a beer.

Was apprehensive about the cinnamon being added, but that and the orange peel played really nicely with each other. The cranberry was very muted, for having the headline on the label.

Poured on draft at Cascade:

Pours a raspberry color with a fluffy white head and ample lacing. The nose is berry-rich and yeasty. Oak is present as well and the taste follows suit, and is slightly tart. I'd definitely consider this a nice entry to sours for a newbie. Oddly, I don't detect much cranberry in the nose or taste. There's some berry there, yes - but I expected more of a cranberry presence. Really good beer. Try one yourself. Cheers!

A: The beer is hazy yellowish red in color. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of funk, sourness, oak, and cranberries are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of oaky wood and cranberries along with slight hints of cinnamon. The spices become a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and somewhat tart and acidic on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has pleasant amounts of sourness along with notes of cranberries.

Thanks to hopodyssey for sharing this one at Retsinis' tasting.

2014 project.

Pours a murky light orange-red with a foamy off-white head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour with grain, fruit, cranberry juice, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with sour fruit, citrus zest, spice, and acidic flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

On tap at City Beer Store. Pours a clear light amber with a small white head that settles to ring and leaves little lacing on the glass. The aroma is tart cranberry, light funk, a bit of cherry, some raspberry, and some light medicinal notes, but not overwhelming. The taste is tart cranberry, cherry, and raspberry. There is a decent amount of lactic acid, but it is not burningly acidic like some of the Cascades. It's not particularly sweet, but not dry either. The finish has a bit of cinnamon. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Quite a nice beer.

Pours a rose/raspberry color with a foamy white head that laces. The nose has non-distinct berry notes, some vinous oak, a hint of latex and yeast. It drinks with a similar flavor profile - tart berry, some grain, and sour culture - which dominates the palate. This is a relatively approachable sour for cascade, it's not overly sour/dry and has a great berry presence. The oak is not overpowering and alcohol presence is minimal. I don't think most people would say "this is cranberry" during a blind tasting, but they say you're other senses are enhanced when you're missing one. I wouldn't buy this again for the price :

Tap at the Cascade Barrel Room.

Fluffy foamy head, semi clear nice color, honey orange to slight pinkish red transition, nice lacing.

Nose big tart cranberry, fresh tart berries, fermented cranberry juice, bright funk, Brett blends nicely with tart berry.

Taste more fresh cranberry, tart funky berry and Brett funk, hint cheesy funk, tart fermented berries, touch of oak I think, faint citrus, nice holiday cocktail flavor. Finish mild sticky flemmy, lingering tart funk and berry.

Mouth med to lighter bod, dec carb, touch flemmy very tart.

well this sure feels like the holidays! a hazy pink brew, thick looking and really alive with the head. smells awesome, tart cranberry, a ton of lactic sourness that makes me throw my head back like smelling salts, and a cool but very moderate spice profile. the cinnamon is not that obvious in nose or taste, and in fact, the fruit stands up by far the most. all the other special ingredients exist purely to compliment it. in the way that the elderberry felt a little overspiced, this one seems to correct for it, hardly there at all except for the finish. i love the tartness of the berries and the acidity of the beer, it will tear up an empty stomach and is awfully sour, but it really does work in this beer. i like the density too, yeast and protein left over in here, gives the beer a richer feel, more regal, more winter, more holiday, its brilliant. creamy almost for how acidic it is, a neat and unique vibe for sure. had this one on tap at road 34 in fort collins. you have to love great american beer fest week! heady beer everywhere, and this one might be the best beer i drink all week, stunning stuff!

Extremely impressed by this offering from Cascade. The cranberry isn't necessarily overly strong in flavor but the layers of flavor consisting of cranberry, tartness/sourness, oak, and some tart apple was excellent. Complex, drinkable, and a solid medium bodied mouthfeel and body.
