750ml bottle (2012) poured into an Idle Hands tulip.
A - Pours a deep purple-y blueberry hue. A finger of fizzy head quick builds and fades equally as fast. Leaves behind a fizzy, bubbly, loose collar and no lacing. If you told me I was looking at a Welch's grape soda I would believe it.
S - Lots of musty aromas here. Richly funky with lots of woody aspects as well. Blueberries come thru with more force than I expected giving a thick blueberry and some spicy, fruity notes maybe giving some cinnamon and light apple-y touches. Overall has a sweet and somewhat sugary impression.
T - Given the aroma especially, this is surprisingly tart and sour. Lactic acidity up front and thru to the finish. Sweet tarts, lemons, citric acid. Blueberry flavor comes thru but is subdued compared to the aroma which isn't very surprising given the difficulty in bringing out their subtle flavors. Marginal sweetness to cut thru the acid just a bit. I'm also getting a bit of a spiciness which I am perhaps transforming in my mind subconsciously into cinnamon and maybe a graham cracker crust for a bit of a blueberry pie effect. Woody flavors blend in nicely to round things out and provide a bit of an offset to the fruity acidity. Mildly funky...noticeable and nice, but a bit more would be desirable.
M - Somewhat thin body, highly tart and acidic giving a dry overall impression. There is just a hint of sweetness that just gets overpowered towards the finish. Very mildly funky and not as fruity as the aroma might have indicated on first smell. Carbonation is lively, medium level that effervesces high above the surface of the glass on each pour...very tingly on the tongue.
O - Very good sour beer. I was especially interested in trying this being a blueberry lover and already a fan of Cascade sours. Would have liked a bit more flavor character from the fruit...the sour overpowered the fruit and lost some of the dimension the fruit could have yielded. Definitely wouldn't mind having this one again.
