Style | ABV
American Wild Ale |  7.33% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
This NW style sour ale blends wheat and blond ales that were oak aged in barrels for six months, then additionally aged four months on fresh blueberries. Huge herbal notes of dense blueberries in the nose give way to hints of oak and a dusty floral note. Rich earthy notes of dark fruit on the palate lead to a tart finish that dries out to a base note of blueberry skins.

Cascade Blueberry pours with a somewhat indistinguishable color; some hybrid between ruby and indigo and orange that I can't really come up with a name for. The body is completely translucent, and the puzzled, white head wastes no time in dissipating to a small ring, outlining the beer at the edge of the glass.

The aroma is a fantastic display of fruity sweetness, sharp acidic notes, a ton of musk, and maxed out levels of funk. Blueberry and blackberry and a hint of black cherry skins, more preservative and jam-like as opposed to the syrupy, concentrate kind of fruitiness. Pure and juicy, rather than fake and muddled; always a good sign.

Musky to the core, Cascade Blueberry exhibits levels of funk that might fool you into thinking this bottle actually came from Belgium. Some wet wood and oak, musk, and damp cellar qualities mesh perfectly with the acidic tartness and faint, underlying sweetness of the fruits in this brew. The 7.33% ABV goes completely unnoticed - completely buried by the fruity onslaught.

It doesn't disappoint in flavor department, either. The first sip brings forth quite a bit of tart blueberry, alongside some softer notes of apple skins, cherries, and blackberries. Just a berry orgy taking place on your tongue, splashing in pools of citric acid and sweetness. Tart, sweet, acidic, and quenching, all at once.

Woody, musky, yeasty-funk is more apparent in the latter half of the sip, making for a pleasantly dry finish that tones down the acidic sharpness, tartness, and mild sweetness of the blueberries excellently. This beer is pretty thin and carbonated heavily, making for a dry, sharp, and crisp mouth feel.

Yet another damn good sour from Cascade. I'm somewhat partially to blueberry stuff, as blueberries are higher up on the list of fruits and fruit flavors I really enjoy. Blueberries tend to get lost in some sour ales, but not here. Wonderfully fruity, heavily tart, and painfully acidic, this beer will make any sour fan go nuts.

A: Pours a beautiful purple/red color with a small white/purple-ish head that quickly dissipates. Lots of carbonation though, the cork popped out with barely any pressure.
S: Apple cider vinegar was the first thing that popped into my head. Followed by tons of blueberries and oak. Lots of sourness. Smells almost like sour candy. A bit of funkiness at the end.
T: Sour blueberries! I love this! Orange, lemons, lactic acid. I would have guessed there were also raspberries and cherries in here. Light oakiness and not as sour as I had expected coming from Cascade. Very tasty though.
M: Light bodied with high carbonation. Pleasant sourness, not overwhelming. A bit of a dry finish.
O: Great beer. I've loved everything from Cascade so far and this is one of my favorites. I will seek this out again for sure!

750ml bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. "2012 Project"

Pours a really nice deep purple color, pretty opaque cloudy. A short lived big purple/ pink head that fizzed away shortly after the pour. Lots of carbonation visible rushing to the top.

A bit of funk is almost overtaken by some grape like vinious notes, some berry as well but not necessarily blueberry. A bit of sweettart. Some acidity noticeable as well. As it warms it becomes a bit more lactic funk with maybe some actual blueberry showing.

More sour/ acidic than the aroma suggested, lingers on the palate after each sip. Sweet tart candy, lots of berry flavors with a bit of red grape. Some lactic and maybe even Brett funk, but the fruit and acidity seem to take center stage in the taste.

A very nice high amount of carbonation, a fairly light feel, and a good amount of tartness make for a drinkable sour. Lots Of sweet tart flavors make this taste like candy in a bottle.

A very nice sour. It lacks a bit of the funk I'm used to in a cascade sour, but non the less very enjoyable.

Bottle (2011 Project)

Acquired via online purchase

Deep purple and light blue with a moderately sized, somewhat persistent light purple head that leaves streaks of lacing bubbles down the glass.

The aroma was quite funky initially and at colder temperatures: an earthy, barnyard, and body funk. But as the beer warmed and after some disturbance, the fruit shined through nicely and was complemented by the funk.

The flavor is quite exceptional, especially as it nears room temperature. The vibrant, juicy blueberry character is paired with moderate sourness and earthy, barnyard funk. Quite lovely, and incredibly drinkable.

Medium bodied with high carbonation.

Amazing.

Poured out mostly a purple color. Looked like it was more of a puree of different fruits, as this one looked like it was aged on blueberries and raspberries. Aroma, nice lactic tartness, not massively sour, but nice, good, displayed the fruit aroma decently, again, not necessarily something distinctively blueberry, but definitely fruity.

Taste, one of the milder Cascade efforts in terms of sourness, but the fruit was there. Nice light wheat body. Absorbs the fruit nicely. I really took a long time out by the pool on a near 100 degree Father's Day to drink this, let it warm up, was quite nice.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Had it again in late 2012, that batch, might be even better than the one I wrote the review for.

2012 Project

Appearance- Really pretty blend of purple and red, with a big pinkish head that fizzled away quickly, but left a thin cap that stuck around for a while.

Smell- Big lactic punch up front, followed by a fairly generic berry sweetness, and some funk. I can't necessarily pick out blueberry, but it smells delicious none-the-less

Taste- Awesome. Obviously it's nice and sour like all the cascade stuff, but it has an almost candy like sweetness to help balance things out. Big berry notes throughout. Finishes with some lemon and more berry. If there were a blueberry sour patch kid, this is what it would taste like.

Mouthfeel- Light mouthfeel, pretty big carbonation. Finishes on the dry side

Overall- Cascade comes through again. Really good stuff, even though it doesn't come cheap, it's definitely worth picking up or ordering from their site.

I'm typically a big fan of Cascade's sours but this one had a very strong phenolic flavor (band-aids) which almost ruined it for me.
