April 2017: 750 ml corked & caged bottle, as Cascade Oak Aged Elderberry Northwest Sour Ale, ale aged in oak barrels with elderberries and spices, 2015 Project. ABV is 7.0%. At Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Fairly dark brown colour, huge beige head. Aroma of sour (black) elderberries, lemons, farmhouse kitchen, spices and malts. Sour / acidic, tart and astringent flavour, loads of lactic acid, notes of lemons and sour elderberries.

There was a time and a place for Cascade beers in the craft beer market about a decade ago. They did a lot of things right, including the barrel aging and the use of fruit. Unfortunately, their beers are "just good enough" now, and at $30 a bottle, it's a hard pass for me.

Consumed a 2011 bottle in early December 2020. Bought two bottles, I liked it more w age than when it was fresh. This review is an average of those 2 scores. Also, my bottle says 8.1% abv, not 7.75 (dat Northern Nevada area code).

Pours a very dark brown. This would seem to be a dark base for a sour, but the commercial tug job speaks of blond and wheat ales being blended to make this beer. The head be thin and beige, 1/8". The aroma is dark sour and light vinegar. Going in the dark fruit non grape direction with this.

Taste is very sour, but with age it tames out a bit. Lots of dark fruit pruny raisin sourness. This is pretty sharp when fresh and more manageable in its old age. Has more bitterness than your average wild ale. But its also stronger than your average wild ale. Carbonation held up well despite the years. I still don't know what elderberries taste like, but at this point, they seem like a dark cranberry/currant impact based on these beers.

Ultimately these were pricey and just not worth the price of admission.

A 750ml corked and caged bottle, 2015 project. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.

Appearance: A hazy amber dark brown colour with a one finger beige head that dissipated fairly quickly, while leaving some nice lacing.

Aroma: Tart, plum, prunes, mixed dark berries, cherry, raisin, with light vinous and cinnamon notes.

Taste: Sour, moderately sharp, tart, vinous, mixed dark berries, blackcurrant, grape skin, blueberry, oak, raisin, with notes of vinegar, and other spices.

Mouthfeel: Moderately sharp acidity, medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Flavours are nice, but the feel may have been slightly too sharp with a lack of balance, which didn’t make it as easy to drink as it could have been.

Filling nearly to coffee black but actually displaying a dark garnet hue under light, this has a fuzzy khaki head that quickly fizzles out.

Smell is really funky, sweaty feet and dank balsamic vinegar, yet it's not sharp, and is more like red wine oak.

Taste is not as sour or funky as I thought it'd be judging from the nose, but is quite sour still, with an intense berry-forward jamminess of blackberry, elderberry and berry seeds, maturing out with a red wine oaky char.

Really good! This has a big, soft carbonation throughout the medium-full body, finishing semi-dry.
