This Northwest-style sour red ale was aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months, then aged on fresh apricots and sour pie cherries for an additional 11 months. Light touches from accent barrels (including raspberries, apples, and spices) were added to bring out the fruit even more.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Bright, slightly hazed, dark orange with a moon-scape eggshell-white head, eventually leaves irregular dots and lines of lacing down the glass. Great retention for a beer of this style.

Big aroma of acidic sourness paired with bright, juicy fruit: apricot and orange, some white grape, and tropical notes abound. There's decent amount of oak as well, though I wouldn't suggest bourbon.

The flavor is very fruit forward as well along with a fairly high level of acidic sour character. Deep oak character combines nicely with the fruit and the sour. Again, I wouldn't suggest bourbon and don't get any trace of it, even with the suggestion in mind. A complete beer; delicious.

Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation.

Perhaps my favorite beer of the day at Churchill's Sour Fest, and the only one I had a second pour of.

On tap for the 2012 Peter Reeves Memorial Sourfest at Churchill’s Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy bone colored head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour, tart, and funky with some fruity and mild bourbon and wood aromas. Taste is much the same but quite sour and has an acidic finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

This single-barrel treat was on cask at the barrel house when I walked in. Labeled as "Bourbon Barrel Aged Fruit Blend"; this should be interesting.

Orange-gold body produces plenty of stubborn white head and lace. Strongly-fruited aroma with apricots, raspberry, other tropical fruits, and spice remind me of Hawaiian Punch -- but much better.

An ingredients list this lengthy often times plagues beers more than it benefits them, but that's not the case here. Tidal waves of various fruits throughout impart complexity and some sweetness, though it finishes tart & dry with residual fruit nectar. Feel is very tart and quite strongly acetic as the sour fruits pillage my taste buds. Man, that is delicious!

One of the best Cascade brews I've ever had, and ranks among the best sours in recent memory too. Shame I'll probably never get to try it again. :(
