Huge thanks to Kevin W for this one - definitely a brew that I thought I'd never get the chance to try. Bottleworks XIV is a burnt and toasty shade of copper; murky and nearly opaque all the way through. The white head whips around quickly on top of the brew and transcends into thin air within a few seconds of the pour. Lively carbonation with a sloppy colored body.

This beer is a mix of Blond Quad and Blond ale aged in three kinds of barrels: bourbon, wine, and rum, all with orange zest for 24 months - quite a bit to wrap your schnoz around. The wine barrel comes through heaviest; heavy, heavy vinous notes with lightly boozy grapes, cherries, apples, oak barrel, bitter orange, and sour, beautiful acidity.

A nice, complex, fruity and tart nose; after some time, I start picking up light bourbon notes from the bourbon barrel. At 12% ABV, this is one motherfunkin' sour ale; chalk that up to the three types of heavier booze-laden barrels. I end up finishing the brew without really getting any rum notes, but bourbon is there, and wine is full-force. Warming and tart at the same time.

Each sip smashes your palate with boat loads of cherry tartness, applesauce, huge vinous grapes, oaky dryness, light vanilla, slight bourbon undertones, with finishing orange and some sense slicing acidic notes. There's plenty of tartness from the fruits, but this is still not what I'd call "sour". It's actually pretty sweet which works well with the stature of the beer.

Warmth brings out some light acetone notes - at 12% ABV, it isn't too much of a surprise, and it's not nearly enough to be off-putting or distracting. It just bumps up the robustness a bit and reminds you that you've got a strong beer in your glass so you don't slam it like a bro and wake up in a strange basement the following morning. Medium bodied, creamy on the palate with a good amount of soft and smooth carbonation.

A weird brew in the way that it's kind of different than most other ales out there. It's tart, it's sweet, it's oaky and dry, it's mildly boozy, and deliciously fruity. Very complex and enjoying to drink, and at 12% ABV, it's drinks incredibly easy. Take a bottle of this to the dome and try not to lash out at the people you love. Thanks again, Kevin. Great stuff.

Bottle (2013)

Thanks for sharing this with me, smarcoly!

Dark amber and near-copper in color. Small ring of small khaki bubbles. Leaves dots of stick down the glass.

A very sweet aroma, with definite rum barrel character, some vinegar and lactic sour character, very similar to many of Cascade's soured bottle offerings. There's some interesting fruit notes as well as some burnt sugars. A bit of alcohol as well.

The flavor is both sweeter and more layered and complex than a lot of Cascade's bottled sours. Rum and barrel are very prevalent, dark fruits, caramel and candy bar, and lots of sour character. A bit too sweet though to be that drinkable.

Somewhat heavy and full in body for a beer of the style. Moderate carbonation and a little booze.

Good, but a very rich, incredibly sweet sour ale from Cascade. Not entirely drinkable because of the alcohol presence and extreme sweetness. Too boozy for it's own good, in my opinion, but still an impressive sour ale from Cascade.

750ml bottle opened with thezoobrew

A: Orange with a nice frothy head

S: smells of vanilla, orange, rum kinda like a orange popiscle

T: tastes like the smell, orange rum cocktail with vanilla trailing, nice full bodied flavor. sour lactic of cascade throughout which brings this to another level

M: nice carbonation, solid throughout

O: a great brew by cascade, one of the best by them, love the full orange flavor of this, I am not a huge rum fan but this was made very well and has the perfect level of rum notes without throwing masking the distinct notes of the beer

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep reddish orange. Big off-white head. Retains well. Clings to the glass.

Smell - Layers of aromas. Peaches, citrus, apples, and then the barrels. Rum is most prevalent. Lots of caramel. Booze.

Taste - Perhaps a slight letdown from the nose. Sweet up front, lots of fruit. Peach and other light fruits. Sugary caramel with rum and brandy. Darkens in the back with a hint of the bourbon barrel. Sour throughout, I suppose I should mention.

Mouthfeel - It's heavy and a little bit boozy. Well carbonated.

Overall - An impressive multilayered sour. Trademark Cascade complexity.
