Received this on a trade. Interesting concept here. Not sure if it was actually brewed with oysters or just the oyster shells that a lot of breweries do.

Appearance: Think porter.

Aroma: Malty, not much in the oyster character. Pretty benign brew.

Taste: Not bad, but pretty much a black IPA or PA. Not a ton of things going on, which is a bit disappointing considering the marketing of the can. It is what it is. Some bitter notes but i don't know if its from the roasty malts or some hop presence.

Overall: This is not a bad beer, but it isn't as daring as I thought it would be.

Curios looking can staring at me from the shelf at Lucia's Bodega. You had me at DC Brau, and it wasn't until I got home that I saw the brewed with oysters on the side. Somewhat hazy dark brow with faint ruby at the edges and a huge fluffy frothy tan head that slowly recedes leaving a sticky mess on the sides of my glass. Earthy pine with hints of coffee, caramel and chocolate, with a hint of salty brine. The flavor is rich and malty with big caramel and chocolate notes offset slightly with an earthy pine that is not big enough to cut through the malt. Lingering hop bitterness in the finish is at times a little harsh. Gritty ashy texture in the mouthfeel makes me feel like I've inhaled some dust and drank some water to wash it away. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation. No easily identifiable date markings on the can so I can't tell if this is an older sample or this is supposed to be a malty black ipa. I could drink this, but I would call it a hoppy porter and ignore the grit.

From the 16 oz can. Sampled on November 2, 2014.

Before I get into the beer I should comment on the graphics and label. Love it! Great artwork. A lovely piece of work.

The pour is very dark brown to just about black with a long lasting tan head. Attractive to look at.

The aroma has a good toasted malt character but there is evidence of black licorice in the mix. Clean hop note. Inviting.,

Medium to full body.

Like the aroma the taste brings out a dark malt and licorice quality. But there is a decent earthy hop bitterness that brings everything into the fold at the end.

This beer--a collaboration between Baxter and DC Brau--pours a deep black color with a brown foamy/wispy head, sort of like cola. The nose has notes of floral, citrus, and toasted broad. The mouthfeel is smooth throughout the middle with a dry/bitter finish. The taste hits with a roasty hoppiness upfront and then fades into notes of dark chocolate, pine, coffee.

Overall, a solid beer. Unfortunately, I did not pick up on any oyster notes.

Sort of a black-brown-dark gray in color. Forms a moderate sized tan colored head. Decent retention. Moderate lacing. Aroma is roasty-toasty malts along with some nondescript hops and a slight metallic tang. Taste is sort of skunked out. Mostly its darker malts, but the malts are strong. Then there is a mix of pine and citrus hops, but, its not as if this is hoppy beer, either. A bit of that metallic taste on the back end. On the lighter side of medium in body. Mild to moderate bitterness. An okay brew. Not sure what the oysters add to this other than a gimmick factor.

Some chocolate charcoal and deep dark bitter pine hop goodness. Pretty thick and plenty tasty.
