Appearance: 1/3 inch head, black in color, low carbonation, opaque

Smell: earth, pine and citrus fruits

Taste: earth, pine, dark chocolate, and citrus fruits

Mouthfeel:sweet start with roasty bitter middle and finish, medium bodied with medium carbonation

Overall: An ok to slightly above average black IPA. I did not get much of the brininess that I was expecting from the oysters. I could have this again or just as well pass.

This beer--a collaboration between Baxter and DC Brau--pours a deep black color with a brown foamy/wispy head, sort of like cola. The nose has notes of floral, citrus, and toasted broad. The mouthfeel is smooth throughout the middle with a dry/bitter finish. The taste hits with a roasty hoppiness upfront and then fades into notes of dark chocolate, pine, coffee.

Overall, a solid beer. Unfortunately, I did not pick up on any oyster notes.

From the 16 oz can. Sampled on November 2, 2014.

Before I get into the beer I should comment on the graphics and label. Love it! Great artwork. A lovely piece of work.

The pour is very dark brown to just about black with a long lasting tan head. Attractive to look at.

The aroma has a good toasted malt character but there is evidence of black licorice in the mix. Clean hop note. Inviting.,

Medium to full body.

Like the aroma the taste brings out a dark malt and licorice quality. But there is a decent earthy hop bitterness that brings everything into the fold at the end.

Full 12oz. poured into a nonic pint glass at Meridian Pint.

Faint tan chestnut head half a finger presented, with thick lacing of sheets down the glass. Deep walnut brown body to match up and slight opaque character. Pretty solid.

Aromas of clean grapefruit and mild roast and some slight tropical indistinct fruit. Very small at first, but subsequent sips and warmth it really opens up. Char character on this is much toned down and no hint of brine or salt. Still as black IPAs come this is giving the goods.

Real nice palate. Finally some charing roast comes out with minimal bitterness on the finish. Finally some brine like character comes out that really seems to effect the carbonation and playfulness on the palate. Almost a hint of salt. Rich and warm, much grapefruit/citrus like flavors to match, that intensifies as it warms.

Overall the oysters don't jar me , and this comes out like a solid black IPA that I could have again easily. Real nice job on this one.

A - Brown-black some highlights at the edges. Small slightly off-white head. Left tons of lacing.

S - Not much there, some roasty notes. No real detectable hops. Maybe some earthy hops, but this could've just been a mild.

T - Ah there's the hops I was looking for. Roasty notes quickly balanced by earthy, herbal hops, then the coffee, dark malts re-establish their presence. Nice back and forth.

M - Medium to thick body, low carbonation. Coats the palate and lingers. Nothing crisp about this brew. Admittedly, I am not experienced with the oyster brews. I imagine this might be the desired quality?

O - A fine brew. Nice to see a collaboration between DC Brau and Baxter. Probably wouldn't seek out again, but happy to have enjoyed.

Beaut of a can. Cola colored liquid with a thick tan head. Bright citrus aroma jumps out of the can with an odd seaweed/tidepool in back. Hops simmer down a bit once the beer is in my glass.

Smooth mouth fell up front then dry, roast smoke then a briny finish. Citrus hops are there but they meld subtly with the roast malt. With some much going on (hops vs. roast malt vs. brine) I thought this would be a mess but it has a definite, well executed direction.
