The CANQuest (tm) attended the 2016 BCCA Spring Thaw over the weekend & I was pleasantly surprised. I expected to be (mainly) looking at antique CANs & the like, with a smattering of the things that I am interested in - embroidered cloth patches, belt buckles & beanie caps around just for kicks. Imagine my joy, surprise & elation when I found out that they will also bring full CANs of current micros for sale & trade! I bought a load, but upon realizing that I was limited in my carry capacity, I decided to CANduct some field reviews so as not to have to lug the CAN & its CANtents home when the CANcipient was RIGHT there! My utmost thanks to Jeff Lebo for having me as a guest. Also, this was another bottom-opened CAN & I continued to realize that it is too much work.
From the CAN: "Double India Pale Ale brewed with 7 Hop Varieties - Millennium [-] Citra [-] Mosaic [-] Sorachi Ace [-] Galaxy [-] Ella [-] Summer"; "Caution[:] Packed with Explosive Hop Flavor [-] Place In Hand [-] Pop the Top"; "Warning [-] Produces Thundering Eruptions of Hoppiness[:] Bursting with the aroma of classic Ameri[CAN] IPA hops, along with a blast of new Australian hop varietals, Bootleg Fireworks is set to detonate a taste explosion. Though backed up by a light, crisp malt profile, this Double IPA isn't balanced - it's all about the hops. We packed nearly 6 pounds of green powder into each barrel and it's ready to erupt from each [CAN]. Boom!'; "Draught Beer Taste, Fit for the Camp [-] Lake [-] BBQ [-] Reekris! [-] Hike [-] Picnic [-] Beach [-] Cooler [-] Backpack [-] Fridge [-] Golf Course".
I was hanging out with Jeff Lebo & he likes to avoid the Crack! but we still got it going. Once in my glass, we watched as three-plus fingers of dense, rocky, tawny head suddenly exploded in our CANlective faces. The sprinklers went off and we were forced to run for cover outside of the room. Color was a hazy Golden-Yellow (SRM = > 5, < 7) with lots of CO2 bubbles in evidence. Nose was a liquefied roll of Tropical Fruit Life Savers! Mango, papaya, tangerine, lemon and pine all shared a place in my glass. It was Pizza Night and this was a citrusy counterbalance to the bready doughiness of the pizza, giving my poor, bruised tongue a much-needed break. I do not know if it was simply due to the CANterbalance of the hops in War Elephant, but this really tasted great! Smooth, easy-drinking, just what I want/need in a DIPA. Hoo! I hesitate to characterize a DIPA as "sweet", but CANpared to War Elephant, this was markedly different. The finish was semi-dry, more tropical-fruity than bitter, but not sweet enough to be CANsidered in that realm. This was an extremely dangerous little chunk of dynamite in a CAN, disguised as simply being a firecracker! A cherry bomb, perhaps ...

Very much enjoyed the hop blend, adds complexity and depth. Wish it was more available.

16 oz tallboy can poured into a Duvel Tulip style glass. Liquid comes out of the glass a nice honey orange color. As it's filling the glass it initially has excellent clarity, but towards the end, the sediment from the bottom of the tallboy can comes out and distributes it's way through the beer. It has a cool effect as it's mixing. Sort of looks like smoke or when you drag a stick through a stagnant mud puddle, cool looking. It was a reasonably aggressive pour into the glass that produced a large head that was sort of a creamcycle color with various sized bubbles. Nice lacing on this beer, nice all around in the visual department.
/Clears throat/ HELLLLLO this beer is hoppy! Great hop aromas of tangerine, blood orange, grapefruit, pine, lemon, fresh cut summer grass and citrus zest. A little bit of sweet orange bread on the back end that's present, but the hops steal the show here.
They pretty much nailed the taste here. Great hop formula, it all meshes together extremely well. The tangerine and grapefruit flavors are really strong, but there's still lemon and pine and a combination of both perfectly fresh and not quite ripe orange. Hint of pepper on the back end. Great flavors all around.
Mouthfeel is really good, lighter end of heavy on the tongue with loooooooong lingering flavors. Moderate carbonation feel that slightly tickles the tongue. Alcohol is present, but the hop profile hides it. I wouldn't have quite guessed 9% I would've said over 8 but not quite 9% if I had to guess. Starts tropical fruity then gets a nice honey/sappy sweetness in the middle and it's followed by a nice dry finish that's slightly spicy. Great beer. Really designed to be a sipper, but it's dangerously drinkable. I'd drink it summer, winter, fall or spring. Great beer Baxter, keeping up with the top shelf NE DIPAs! Shout out to the BBBG, strong work!
