American Pale Ale (APA) |  4.90% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Brilliant clarity, bright golden in color. Pamola Pours with a nice creamy head and subtle malt and hop aroma. Crisp, clean, effervescent start with a touch of malt character and a balanced bitterness. Hop flavors linger nicely. Finishes clean, crisp and dry with a light body. Pamola is brewed with pure, soft Maine water from Lake Auburn; three different hop varieties, plus domestic and imported “Character” malts provide complexity, color and body while making use of a clean, well attenuating, top-fermenting American ale yeast. The beer is then cold conditioned for a smooth, clean and crisp flavor. This one is extremely drinkable!

Generally: Not quite a whisper of an ale, but definitely a wallflower. It turns out, however that this shy little lad has plenty to offer and is, I suspect, exactly the type of broadly appealing session strength ale that Baxter wanted to make. It has all of the character of a carefully thought out ale. Of course their intentions are made manifest on the can... this beer is for camping, hiking, bbqing, etc., etc.. It works on its own terms.

The Pour: The first thing I notice is some extremely lively carbonation, which makes my mouth water a little. Crystal clear and pale golden in color with a nice, very finely built head. Very pretty beer.

Face in the glass: Nice lemony hop notes and a faint breadiness greet you, but they are not saying that much. Very subtle on the nose.

Temperature: 47 to begin with.

With Regard to Taste: For a beer with 4.9% ABV, there is a genuinely impressive amount of structure here. Citric hop notes are balanced up front with a nice bready sweetness and it concludes with a heck of lingering bitterness. Not too dry, not too bitter, not too much beer for mountainside shenanigans and/or waterskiing. And I have to add that the mouthfeel is outstanding. Creamy and Bright have never gotten along so well.

Abstract: While not a style of beer that is likely to excite devotees of huge beers on first pass, it has a few tricks up its sleeve if you give it a chance. More importantly, it's a very nice articulation of the style.

Epitoma: It's a bummer that all of this will be lost on 76% of the people who drink it because they'll be too busy throwing lawn darts at each other and trying to climb trees.

Note: It's a perfect lunch beer, for the rest of us, because it won't make you slur your words and it would go nicely with something like grilled cheese. It's bright enough to cut through some fat.

Serving type: 12 oz Can. I liked the 2nd can better than the first, whatever that means.

Color is a thin yellow gold, just a shade darker than most macros. Smell of grass, stagnant water. Taste is decent though -- light and fizzy with a bit of a malty bite. Ideal for outdoors on a hot day. It's like what I wish a Miller Lite actually tasted like.

A pretty good brew. A good balance of malts and a bit of hops to add a little bitterness but nothing major. The smell was quite fruity so i was expecting more of a fruit flavor however any fruitiness is faint yet there is definitely some there. The mouth feel is quite good, with good carbonation and a pretty dry finish. Overall a pretty good pale ale, crisp and refreshing.
