Notes/Commercial Description:
Bold, complex flavors with a solid malt backbone and assertive hop profile, along with cold conditioning, give this beer its crisp, clean, hoppy finish. Deep amber-to-orangish in color, Stowaway pours with a nice, creamy head; a huge hop aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit notes; and a big, complex, and intense hop flavor from the 5 different hop varieties and double-dry-hopping procedure used in making this beer. The malt flavor up-front turns dry and crisp; Stowaway is full-bodied but with a dry finish and pleasant, long-lasting, hop aftertaste. This I.P.A. definitely leaves you wanting more.

I've become a big fan of this cans-only Maine brewer, and they have yet to disappoint. Their XPA isnt a favorite of mine, but I appreciate the hoppiness they shoot for. Stowaway is a very different beer, and is an excellent classic IPA. I wouldn't call this "west coast" as the citrus and floral are distant 2nd tier flavors to the big bitter hops that are all over this one. It's not especially complex and gets more bitter than flavorful as it warms up.

Compared to the other Portland area breweries of Geary's, Gritty's, Sebago, & Shipyard; Baxter is the IPA champ by a landslide. And if you are a pure hop head, you would probably prefer this one to even Lunch.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #51 (April 2011):

Hazed amber color is blaming the hops, while the head gives the hops the credit. Semi-thick nose of rind and resin; hop nose of ruby red grapefruit and soft pine, with hints of alcohol and malt in the back. Smooth and creamy medium body. Malt foundation flaunts its stuff a bit with biscuity, nutty and bready flavors before the hops come close to completely cover the palate with a sound bitterness and slowly unfolding flavor of citric rind, tobacco, spear- mint and pine sap. Quick hit of ripe tropical fruit and faint warmth from the alcohol. Hops don’t want to let go and the malt tries to keep up in the semidry finish. East Coasters can hop ... ‘nough said.

Canned on 3/21/11.
In a pint glass the beer was a clear amber color. It had a big, fluffy off-white head, with a little bit of lace.
Fresh, floral aroma. Sweet malt. A little bit of citrus.
Piney hops, bready. Some grapefruit. The hops lingered well.
A nice, medium-bodied IPA. Pleasant hops.
Would drink this again.

First off, I will say this beer is wildly inconsistent. I've had it several times on draft and went through a 6-pack of cans - really a different beer each time.

That said, I'll judge the beer on average when I've had it on tap.

Pours dark copper with little head. Settles down pretty quickly. Nose is similar to the ubiquitous Harpoon IPA in my opinion.

First taste sometimes is a bit rough. A bit dirty and muddled upon first sip, but a strong hop presence comes to wipe everything up at the end. A bit of citrus, semi-hot alcohol, and depending on which time I've had it, can be pretty enjoyable. Can be grassy and a tad smokey sometimes too. Every time I've had it, the beer has a strong malt backbone.

This beer is an enigma to me. Way too inconsistent from each time I've had it.

Poured into a tulip. Shared with my wife and sister and a little for my cat.

The beer is gold and amber with a big big head. The head is sticky and hangs to the glass. The head floats and remains.

The aroma is hops up front, citrus with some floral notes and a little pine in the back. The malts comes back in the end.

The mouth starts with a smooth malt. Quickly it becomes a pungent hops citrus and earthy with a smooth mouth feel. The malt continues and the hops create a bitterness.

Pours one fingers worth of an off white foamy head. Hazy copper colored body. Some lacing and a small cap remains.

Smells of grapefruit, pine, carmel sweet malts and some bready yeast.

Tastes of pine and grapefruit, light sweet carmel, grainy and toasty malts with a kick of tobacco on the finish. Some what dank and oily may be another way to describe it. Mineraly and kind of salty on the finish.

Medium thin bodied, medium carbonation. Somewhat coating and oily on the finish.

Overall a tasty ipa. A nice take on the style and quite drinkable.
Good aroma, firm bitterness with a good malty character.
$2 a can

Had on tap at New World Tavern--served into a pint glass

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, moderate carbonation, dark golden amber in color, clear

Smell: big time pine and citrus hops and caramel

Taste: big time pine and citrus hops and caramel

Mouthfeel: medium-light body, bitter spike in just about the beginning less bitter end, moderate carbonation

Overall: I was surprised with how bitter this one was for the amount of IBUs. The beginning almost reminded me of Hop Devil by Victory. A bit bitter for my tastes but worth trying for a hop head.

Poured from a can into a pint glass.

Appearance: Cloudy darker amber color. Very thick off-white head that lasted almost 10 minutes. Heavy lacing on the glass.

Smell: The usual IPA smells. Hops, citrus, pine

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth mostly, slight grittyness to it, medium bodied. Taste was more bitter than I expected. Very piney taste with faint citrus flavors.

Overall: This was an OK beer, glad I tried it, but not really a fan(and I really like IPAs too), kinda disappointed with this one.

12oz can poured into a tumbler.

Pours a hazy amber with a small white sticky head with some light lacing. Nose is sticky and hoppy with sweet backbone.

Taste is quite bitter with a separate nice thick sweet mouthfeel. Very well balanced - there is some nice fruitiness as well. Overall it's quite tasty and drinkable.

Stowaway I.P.A. opens with a full, hop-driven grapefruit aroma, being a mixture of both pink grapefruit flesh and white grapefruit rind. Pine resin adds a secondary layer of bitterness here, being almost as potent as the grapefruit. Touches of lemon, mint, anise, and dandelion stem round out the hop aromas, altogether speaking of a nicely balanced hop profile that plays to multiple layers and strengths. Malts are somewhat more difficult to locate here due to the strength of the hop aromas, but some hints of cracker and toast crust are still present, as are brown sugar, and a good orange and apricot fruit ester counter. As a whole, the nose is very nice, making it immediately apparent that the beer has been brewed lovingly and with quality ingredients. A touch more sugars would have been nice, but there’s still enough in here to please.

On the tongue, the beer starts off with an expected hop slam, but here the hops are almost entirely bitter and plant-like, with grapefruit rind, pine resin, and dandelion stem fighting for dominance, and touches of lemon, eucalyptus, and mint lingering only slightly below the surface. The beer only has 69 IBUs, but it feels like more, so potent is this hop-based bitterness. Malts are, again, more difficult to locate against the hop blast, but toast crust and cracker do come through, as do brown sugar and some orange, fig, and apricot notes. Towards the end of the mouthful, as the sugars die off, the bitter rind, resin, and plant stem hop notes take over a larger and larger portion of the flavor profile, until by the aftertaste, they are virtually all that is left, and linger on the tongue for a long time, joined by a slight alcohol vapor. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is a solid IPA, definitely showcasing the bitter side of the hop experience, but nicely so. Again, a few more sugars in the main body would have helped a bit, especially a stronger orange and apricot presence. But this is still a beer to please hopheads.

Honey copper colored with a half inch head of tightly bubbled foam that slowly fades as large bubbles rise up and create pop, creating pockmarks and craters. Fresh and inviting aroma of citrusy and floral hops.

Flavors initially of doughey malt, followed quickly by citrusy hops, lots of tangerine and orange peel, some pine and grapefruit rind, pithy and malty at the same time, well balanced. Moderate to aggressive bitterness, firm but not overpowering.

Even and full mouthfeel, creamy and satisfying. Nice beer.
