Midnight Porter is a blend of Old World style and New World flavor. Our Porter is based on the traditional English style that was designed to be lighter than a stout and more drinkable at any time of day. It was popular among the laborers of the early 1800s and derives its name from this group of people. Caramel malts give this ale body and Black patent and chocolate malts provide its rich, chocolate-like flavor and ruby hue.

Poured a deep brown/black with ruby highlights. Thick tan head left a nice lace on the glass until the end.

Aroma dominated by malty roast, not a lot of anything else. Flavor was roasty and bready - very carbonated, which makes the body very light on the tongue, but almost numbs some of the taste of the brew.

Overall, a pretty good porter. Good roasty character, not a lot of hops (as to be expected), not cloying or sweet, but a good, malty presence. I'd have it again.

Served on-tap at their brewpub in Portland, Maine. This porter was presented in a pint glass.

The appearance is dark brown with one finger of a tan head. It has a nose with barley, some roasted malts and a small dose of coffee. Tipping this back, I taste molasses, dark chocolate, coffee too. Mouthfeel is a light-medium, with smoke and bitterness in the finish. A good porter, worth trying if you appreciate the style.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams pint glass. Purchased at Nikki's Liquors in North Providence, Rhode Island.

A- Pours a nearly opaque black body with a quite uniform off white head that reduces to a thin white film that leaves some decent lacing. Comparable to Guiness Draught.

S- Toasted malt, sweet coffee beans, toffee, subtle dark fruits.

T- Unexpectedly bold and tasty. Upfront, dark chocolate and roasted coffee ending with a very slight dark fruit flavor that eventually leads to a toasted, nearly burnt malt aftertaste.

M- Slightly thin and over-carbonated for a porter, but super smooth and drinkable.

I enjoyed this porter a lot. It was surprisingly balanced and complex. An underdog in this category, but if you can get your hands on this brew, I'd definitely say it's worth a try.

On-tap 3/3/2012 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a large beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a very creamy coffee flavor followed by background flavors of chocolate and smoke. There’s a hearty roasted malt character and the hops presence is mild but complementary creating a good balance.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid porter worth drinking for a while.
