Lake Trout Stout is midnight black with a thick and creamy head. It is a full bodied stout brewed with oatmeal and plenty of hops to balance the roasted barley. Our stout is an experience. It tastes the same way it looks - dark and rich. It is named after the famous deep water Sebago Lake Togue or Lake Trout which inhabit the depths of Maine's deepest lake. Enjoy.

A-attractive creamy tan head. Clear with a chocolate brown color
S-aromas of coffee, sweet toasted dark malt-very nice
T-spot on with the nose. The malts are rich without being too bitter
M-very smooth, moderate carbonation
O-easy drinking full flavored excellent stout. Successfully Walks the line of being rich dark malt flavor without being over the top bitter

Deep and rich, this stout boasts huge coffee flavors, and has obviously been brewed with massive amounts of chocolate malt, maybe even black malt (as I do detect an ashy undertone). Even the mouthfeel is heavy, resembling more cream than water. A good, thick layer of hops lies underneath, and while the bottle does say that it's there to "balance the roasted barley," it seems to me that it ends up catalyzing it.

I'm torn on how to rate this beer, because while I do enjoy it, I also recognize that the sheer overpowering taste means that this brew rides a razor's edge, and comes very close to plunging into the unpalatable abyss. So if you really--and I mean REALLY--love thick, heavy, black coffee flavors, you've gotta give this one a try. But if even a Guinness is already pretty out there for you, then I'd suggest you stay away.

Deep dark brown, nearly black with garnet highlights. A two-inch high head rises up thick and bulbous and fat and rounded and slowly sinks back to an inch high mound with fat bubbles loudly bursting slowly.

Rich aroma of espresso and dark chocolate, molasses and currant.

Richer flavor of darkly roasted malt, burnt espresso and dark chocolate, smokey and leathery, charred bark, finish of burnt oak. Great flavor, very complex, reminds a lot of an imperial.

Full and creamy mouthfeel upfront, thins out across the tongue, finishes tingly.

Very tasty, highly drinkable, an incredibly flavorful sessionable beer. Happened upon this and had to try just cuz of the name, it was a very happy accident.

This was a good find, a good addition to the selection at the store.

This pours a nice dark color, good head, nice lacing. Greta taste, and great smell. The palate is of roasted coffee and chocolate, very yummy...

another good comparison to this is the Grand Imperial Porter from Poland.

I bought this at Tully's in Wells ME.Great place to buy beer.This pours a dark coffee/like brown,almost black.The head is a little small though,only about one finger.A real nice roasted malt coffee smell,very refreshing.A deep rich coffee flavor with bits of chocolate and something sweet,Carmel?
A nice mouthfeel thats pretty heavy but good,and normal for this type.This is a very good beer and if I can find it in CT I will have it again.Otherwise it's off to Tully's.

Originally reviewed on May 21, 2006. Julios Spring Beer Festival. Light coffee aroma. Pour of murky dark black chocolate with a lacy rim of tan. Flavor is a sweet, but thin, film of oily coffee residue and chocolate covered espresso beans. Oak, tannins and cocoa butter dryness play out in the backend. Really not all that enticing to me. Finish of dry cherries.

A pretty nice beer. I am sure with a few more reviews its rating will improve. I think part of the reason I liked it so much is simple...I was in the mood for a mild ABV stout. Poured deep black, with a slight tinge of red. Its head reminded me an Irish Dry Stout. Nice foamy head, smooth character. A silky body, followed by a healthy dose of very dry hops.

Not the best Americna Stout in New England but not a bad one at all. I will definatley seek out some of this breweries other offerings.

Exceptionally dark with a pillow light chocolate head an good lacing. Smell is mainly malty with some smoke and hop elements. Taste is a tame malt on the front, with a hint of coffee, light smoke and hops. Mouthfeel is light slightly oily on the start with a strong hop bitterness in the finish. Drinkability is ok, but just a tad harsh ion bitterness on teh finish.

Aroma is rich roasted coffee and chocolate. Deep black color with a thumb thick tan head. Roasty and bitter. Bitter baker’s chocolate. Very smooth mouthfeel, but much more roasty than it should be for a sweet stout. Could use a lot more creamy, vanilla sweetness than it has to balance it...and make it taste like an actual sweet stout.

22oz bomber into nonic.

Pitch black with only a hint of ruby light coming in at the very edges down at the bottom. A frothy one finger light brown head slowly settles to a razor thin cap with a thick rim.

Bitter roasty malts that mimic dark coffee. Maybe a touch of dark chocolate.

The roasty malts are extra bitter, this almost seems like just a step below a RIS without the massive hops. The plain coffee bean flavor is in the flavor as well. Full bodied, good carbonation. The finish is the lingering bitter malts.

I really like this stout. It's solid, but doesn't put you out like an RIS or Export Stout. Not quite a session beer but it's very drinkable. Plain ol' American Stouts don't have much complexity, but this one has just a touch of it. Recommended.

A dense group of mixed bubbles create a rock light carmel brown head. Fades very slow leaving considerable scattered lace. Body is a silky jet blackness. Nose is nice with big mocha tones that are deep and rich with chocolate and coffee. Enters the mouth thinner than the nose had led me to expect. A bit of burnt malt and creamy bitter bakers chocolate work on the front of the tongue to the back. Dry coffee black notes linger on the back of the tongue and create a bitter thick mouthfeel. Some slight smokey notes are there to. Nicely drinkable.

A) Pours with half inch tan head. Lacing is thin bubbled and sticky. Opaque.
S) Coffee. Bread. Hop notes are very faint.
T) Smoky. Coffee. Cocoa. Very light hops in the finish. Lingering chocolate and coffee in the aftertaste.
M) Thick. Chewy. Full bodied. Gritty.
D) A good stout. Well crafted.

Part of the sebago collection I recieved from my good friend Matt up north. Decided to do the vertical/horizontal/ whatever it is of all of them. Poured into a pint glass,lol.

black as night, dark oil like liquid. Huge tan head had a very very slow fade and left lots of lace all the way down the glass. Looked just like a stout should look....thick.

Smell was very robust, deep roasted coffee and dark german chocolate. Hints of a sugary or caramel sweetness as well. Taste was very thick and complex. Big deep roasted flavor, almost a burnt taste to it. Lots of flavors of coffee and german dark chocolate. Cery thick feel, but not syrupy, great carbonation led to a great silk like feel. Nice big hoppy finish left a very long lingering burnt aroma, I could literally taste it for 20 mins after the last sip, very outstanding full flavor

Pours a dark brown almost black color with a huge amount of light tan head, maybe too much, fades at a slow rate, leaves a huge amount of lacing too.

Smell is pretty much all roasted malt with little bit of a metallic aroma.

Taste is actively carbonated, pretty much explodes in my mouth like a cola, good amount of roasted malt with a coffee-ish bitter aftertaste, the bitterness doesn't linger too long, feels a bit thin for a stout though and lacking on the creaminess (probably because of the carbonation).

Poured from 12oz bottle into NB globe. Pitch black pour with a nice thick brown head. It looks really nice; the brown/tan head just looks thick and creamy.
Really nice aromas of roasted chocolate and vanilla. Taste is of bitter roasted malts, slight chocolate and nice vanilla notes. Nice oatmeal and hop balance as well. It feels a bit thin; missing real body, and slightly bitter, but overall a good stout. Just wish the abv was higher.

On the nitro-tap at Bukowski's in Boston, poured a nice pure black color with a small but creamy tan head. Big aromas for a nitro, spent coffee grinds, light chocolate and toasted malt. Flavors are heavy on the coffee here, pure black espresso beans with a touch of vanilla and a lightly hopped finish. Not as dry a finish as I expected but it's quite drinkable. If you like big coffee flavors in your stouts, this ones for you.

I liked this a nice representation of a american stout.

A- Dark body wispy head not bad.

S - Small amount of chocolate going on.

T More of the same chocolate flavor and taste.

M - smooth not much else

D -Its good and I want another smoooth an highly drinkable.

This beer appears to be a dark cola color with a think film of dirty tan that leaves a touch of lace behind.

Smells pleasantly of coca and afresh coffee with a dry kicker of oats and rhubarb.

Tastes thin and fruity that starts with a garbled heap of rye bread, apples and grapes with a touch of ashy smoke that transitions into a nice coffee and a faint dark chocolate. The distant thin watery nature of this one really keeps the eclectic flavors at bay so that they work with each other instead of against. This one finishes off with a tart sour candy nip and a smoky coffee.

Feels just about right for the flavors to deliver themselves, with a subdued, slick body and a nice airy carbonation.

A neat take on the style for sure.

My beer review served in a 8 oz. plastic hotel cup.

Black with a showy tan head. Several layers of lace left like one of those sand art things bottles.

Smells like roast malt, char and goey dark chocolate syrup. Has an encompassing leafy, muddy throughout.

Tastes like it smells only stronger. Bittersweet chocolate and coffee with a lovely bitter roast malt back and fade. Mud puddle earthyness.

A bit thin for most stouts but downright chewy at 4.75% abv.

Lake Trout is Sebago's epiphany beer; far better than anything else in their portfolio. Three years ago I actually heard an argument about this very subject break out two rows in front of me during a Phish concert.

22oz bottle. Pours out an almost pitch black with a full tan head that drops quickly. Some sticky lace left around the glass. Big chocolate and roasted notes come through in the aroma. Light malty sweetness in the background. Bitter coffee and roasted malts upfront on the flavor. Some sweet chocolate as well. End on a lingering bitter roasty note. Solid body and pretty drinkable. The taste is a bit to simple with the big roasted coffee notes but still enjoyable overall.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a thin beige head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains chocolate, caramelized malts, honey and touches of hops & dark fruit.

T: The taste starts out with mildly sweet flavors of chocolate, caramel, licorice and dark fruit. Then a hearty but thin for the style malt character comes in. There is also some smokiness in the background. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly smoky.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry but very clean for the style.

O: Tasty and complex, goes down very easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style and yet slightly different. At first sip, this was a difficult beer for me to judge. However, as I kept drinking, this beer continued to grow on me. It’s lighter than most stouts and a lot more complexity than your typical chocolate intensity. If you’re one of those people (like I’ve been) that think big stouts are either too thick and heavy to drink for a long time and that the milder stouts are too dry and lacking in flavor to keep your interest, then this is the beer you may want to try. While I’m not giving anywhere close to all 5’s for this beer, this has definitely been one of the more unexpectedly interesting and enjoyable reviews that I’ve written.

22oz bottle purchased from Julio's, Westboro, MA.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed 1/2" brown head over the opaque dark brown/black brew. Head holds its own, with plentiful sticky tan lacing. Aroma is dark grains. Taste is dark malts as well, pretty well balanced between chocolate sweet and rich coffee. Mouthfeel is smooth and easy, and drinkability is very good. Session stout, anyone?

Thick black with a thick layer of coffee colored head. The aroma is coffee, roasted (almost burnt) malts, some tangy dark fruits.
Flavor is extremely smooth. Dark malts are the solid foundation for this brew. Black and roasted dark chocolate, bitter coffee and bakers chocolate and a layer of earthy hops. Light carbonation and a thick body made this beer perfect for my breakfast on a Sunday morning.

A: Thick creamy head of about half a finger. It's also a dark colored head. An almost pitch black color with very small hints of light escaping around the corners. It's not too thick, seems semi thin as I swirl it around the sides of the glass.

N: Chocolate and roasted malts dominate. A nice bakers chocolate aroma with hints of milk chocolate. Also adds to the roasted malt aromas with hints of coffee and a nice roasted aroma. Then some oats add more depth to it. It has some reminiscence of Breakfast Stout on the nose, but a little less coffee and chocolate. I also get the very slightest hint of sweet malts converted to alcohol, with almosta slight boozy aroma.

T: Starts with more chocolate. More of a milk chocolate on the taste. It's accompanied by more roasted malts, and hints of coffee but much less than the nose. It def has a nice roasted malt flavor thought. Nice thick velvety like taste, and feel but that comes later. A slight sweet malt flavor, with some caramel. Then more oats come to fruition, adding a nice oatmeal quality to combine with the chocolate, coffee, and caramel to make a nice dish. A nice stout like flavor, adding some scorched malts, and earthy qualities, also adds depth. Pretty much no alcohol.

M: Thicker than I thought, smooth and almost velvety. Milk chocolate comes to mind, whole milk.Very little carbonation.

F: A very slight alcohol comes through with some warmth. It's still a little sweet and malty, with tons more chocolate, milk chocolate. It also gets semi bitter on the finish. I think its more of a stout like bitterness than a hop based. The starched malts bring out some earthiness. It also gets a touch of spice, which could be from the alcohol or some light hops. More coffee seems to burst out late on the finish, again giving a breakfast stout like taste. It's actually a very enjoyable stout, not too heavy or thick, a nice velvety feel and taste, lots of chocolate and roasted malt flavors, some oats, coffee, and pretty much no boozy flavor.

I am sampling a room temp bottle poured into a snifter. The beer pours pitch black with creamy tan head of 1 cm foaming up easily. The head fades and rests as a surface layer quickly. The aroma is roasted malt and a bit of grassy hops and just a hint of coffee and dry roasted malt. First sip reveals a lite to average body with very smooth texture. Also very fine rollig carbonation. Flavor starts with a bit of sweet malt and chocolate and roasted notes as well. Moves to grassy hops and this combines with roasted notes and lingers for a bit after each swallow. A nice beer that is easy to drink, but a little thicker body would be an improvement.
