500 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/1/2012. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, cherry, plum, pear, fig, toffee, toast, apple, molasses, oak, brown bread, chocolate, coriander, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark malt, yeast ester, and moderate oak notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, raisin, plum, cherry, fig, pear, toast, toffee, apple, oak, brown bread, chocolate, coriander, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, raisin, plum, cherry, fig, pear, toast, toffee, oak, brown bread, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity of dark malt, yeast ester, and moderate oak flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding scotch ale. All around awesome complexity and balance of dark malt, yeast ester, and moderate oak flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

I picked up a bottle of Traquair's Jacobite Ale last month for $7.49 at The Lager Mill. I've never seen or heard of this beer before, but I was looking for something different and I thought I would take a chance on it, so lets see how it goes. Best before 2018. Poured from a brown 500ml bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks nice, it's got some decent information on it, but it's not the most eye catching. It poured a nice dark brown color that took on a little bit of crimson hue when held to the light with a fingers worth of medium tan head that quickly died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This was a nice looking beer but I wish the head and lacing were a little better.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of sweetness that has a candy like aroma to it and it's followed by the malts being the first to show up and they impart some toasted, caramel, light brown bread and toffee like aromas. Up next comes the dark fruits, they are pretty sweet and brighter then you normally get with this style and they impart some black cherry and red grape like aromas that are pretty nice and there's a slight spicy aroma in the background that must be from the coriander. Towards the end i get a light sherry and light tobacco like aroma with some light oak flavors showing up. This beer had a pretty good aroma that was pretty complex, I liked it.

T- The taste seems to be fairly simile to the aroma and it starts off with a higher amount of sweetness being the first to show up and it imparts a sweet candy like flavor with the coriander showing up first imparting a spicy flavor with some of those light toasted, caramel, and toffee like malts aroma. Up next comes a big fruity flavor with black cherry and red grapes still sticking out the most, but they are a little medicinal tasting with a little more sweetness in the background. On the finish there's some lighter oak like flavors with a lighter sweet alcohol flavor with pretty much no bitterness and a sweet and fruity aftertaste. This was a pretty nice tasting and unique beer, but i wish it wasn't so sweet.

M- Smooth, rich, a little cloying, silky, on the thicker sided of being medium bodied with a pretty low amount of medium carbonation that worked well with this beer. The mouthfeel was nice, but I wish it wasn't a little cloying.

Overall I thought this was a pretty nice beer and while it isn't the truest to style it still has some of those base Scotch Ale flavors, but the sweetness and fruity flavors are really kicked up and the coriander adds to the uniqueness of this beer. This beer didn't have the best drinkability, it was smooth, rich, a little cloying and the taste did a decent job at holding my attention but I think the high amount of sweetness would start to wear on me so I think one glass would be enough for me, but I think this would make for a nice beer to enjoy on cool fall night by the bonfire. What I like the most about this beer was the aroma, it was pretty good and very unique and complex for the style. What I liked the least about this beer was the sweetness, it was just a little too high for me and it held this beer back from being as good and drinkable as it could be. I might buy this beer again in the fall if i'm in the mood for something like this, but it's a little expensive and I wouldn't buy it regularly. I would recommend this to people who likes sweet and fruity beers. Overall I thought this was a nice beer, it did have a couple things that held it back but when it came to the flavor and aroma it was pretty complex and I thought it was a very unique take on the style and I actually thought that the Coriander worked well with this beer and I wasn't really expecting that to happen and I wouldn't mind seeing more Scotch Ales brewed with it. This made for a nice first impression for Traquair and while it isn't my favorite Scotch ale it sure is pretty memorable. Nice job guys, keep up the solid work.
