This will be my third Jester King beer and I doubt I will be disappointed by this one. Every one I've had has impressed me and since today is International Stout Day, I thought it'd be a good idea to pick up Jester King's Black Metal Imperial Stout.

The beer pours a pitch and opaque black. It looks like you're pouring out a dark syrup. The head forms slowly with the bottom formation having an awesome look as the carbonation rises to the top and builds the ultra creamy, chocolate mousse-colored head. No lacing, decent retention, and a bit of head always remains on top. This is a lovely-looking beer.

Roasty, smoky, chocolatey, coffee-y, booze, and a lactose sweetness. I don't think they put lactose in, it isn't mentioned as an ingredient on the bottle, but it seems to be there or something else like it. The booze is pretty strong, it is 10.4% ABV after all, but there is plenty of other aromas.

The flavors don't kick in immediately, but there's some decent hoppy bitterness from hops and a coffee, chocolate, and a bit smoky roastiness that gets stronger as you taste it. Roasted barley is strong while some chocolate bitterness sneaks in there too. It's definitely boozy, adding some warmth and makes for a beer you should drink before bed. Ha! Like most stouts, this gets better as it warms, with all of the complexities becoming more evident. This has some damn good flavors but I do think the booziness hides the other flavors a bit much. It takes away from the robustness.

I'd say this is a bit on the medium side of heavy-bodied but it's by no means light. It's pretty smooth, creamy, and a bit syrupy throughout. The end has a drier finish.

Another damn good and impressive beer by Jester King. I think they may be the most adventurous Texas brewery I've had the pleasure of trying their beers. I've only had three of them but I've been impressed by all three.

Been sitting on this bottle for a while now, tonight seemed like the right night. Had it fresh and this one held onto since they went farms house on it...enjoyed from that jester king zwanze tulip.

a - brew pours a deep lush black with a nice dark brown cap that eventually dissolves down to a thin skin. Lacing is slippery and doesn't cling much.

s - nose is faded chocolate with some soft roast notes. Not really much to it. Very subdued. Little burnt.

t - comes alive on the first sip. Nice chocolate and roasted coffee. I had remembered this being a roast bomb but this is nice. Roast is still fairly aggressive but the oxidation puts the chocolate in a mellow place that sits right with the roast...and lends to some dark fruit sweetness which is really nice.

m - fairly soft and light. Easy drinker, almost thin even. Abc is invisible.

o - this beer is in a great place right now. Very enjoyable. Drink them if you got them!

I have no clue what year this is.

A- Pitch black. This is a fearsome looking beer. Pinky sized head that transitions to the smallest of lacing with no legs.

S- Pretty bland here. Dark chocolate and malt.

T- Dark chocolate and malt. Very big RIS.

M- Very little carbonation, but very thick for a RIS.

O- This was my first Jester King, and they did a really good job for a bold dark RIS.
