Live tasting, 750 ml bottle into Duvel tulip...

Appearance; pours blacker than the blackest black times infinity with a Behemoth (see what I did there? And before anyone nitpicks with me, their first few albums were black metal ;)) brown head... Close to four fingers, and this thing hangs around FOREVER. Thick and lush, but definitely not what I was expecting for a 10.4% stout...

Smell; fairly unremarkable, coffee and hints of roast, notes of chocolate and if I get my nose close enough, the slightest touch of alcohol...

Taste; leads off with chocolate, with flavors of coffee, roast and malt... Slight notes of alcohol...

Mouthfeel; lush and viscous, this is probably the highlight for me, decent amount of carbonation... Goes down smooth, with a sticky mouthfeel... Full bodied...

Overall; a good but not incredible RIS, worth trying but not sure I'd go out of my way for it again...

Been sitting on this bottle for a while now, tonight seemed like the right night. Had it fresh and this one held onto since they went farms house on it...enjoyed from that jester king zwanze tulip.

a - brew pours a deep lush black with a nice dark brown cap that eventually dissolves down to a thin skin. Lacing is slippery and doesn't cling much.

s - nose is faded chocolate with some soft roast notes. Not really much to it. Very subdued. Little burnt.

t - comes alive on the first sip. Nice chocolate and roasted coffee. I had remembered this being a roast bomb but this is nice. Roast is still fairly aggressive but the oxidation puts the chocolate in a mellow place that sits right with the roast...and lends to some dark fruit sweetness which is really nice.

m - fairly soft and light. Easy drinker, almost thin even. Abc is invisible.

o - this beer is in a great place right now. Very enjoyable. Drink them if you got them!

10.4% ABV. 750ml bottle

Appearance: Pours like the blackest crude oil you can imagine. Small head with little retention.

Smell: Strong notes of coffee, chocolate, roasty malts, and somewhat of a floral bouquet.

Taste: Dark fruits, similar tastes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, hop bitterness is present and makes itself known to balance out the sweetness of this beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, but surprisingly light. A pleasant, easy carbonation matches the body as I'm sure over-carbonation would absolutely kill this delicate beer.

Overall: Reading the ingredients list provides some insight as to why the body is so thin. Dextrose is listed on there. Dextrose boosts the alcohol content since it completely ferments out, but leaves a thinner mouthfeel. Even with the light body, this beer certainly has it's place as a great pairing beer to a heavy dessert.

On tap - well actually out of a pitcher - at the brewery's grand opening celebration.

The beer pours a black color with a dark brown head. This is a great looking beer.

The aroma is heavy on the roasted malt with some chocolate mxied in. Not too complex, but everything mixes well together.

The flavor is more of the same. The chocolate really stands out and the roasted malt compliments it very well. A nice, chocolate-forward imperial stout. The alcohol is well hidden and the beer is very - dangerously - easy to drink.

The mouthfeel is on the thinnish side of medium and is really my only complaint. I wish it was thicker and more viscous. Medium carbonation.

A very nice imperial stout.

Thanks to davacano for this one! I’ve been saving this for a special occasion, but occasions seem to be few and far between. So, I’m celebrating the impending arrival of some more Jester King!

750ml bottle poured into a Jester King Grand Opening snifter. Looks like there are remnants of a bottle date at the top of the bottle but I can’t make it out. I received this bottle in 5/11.

A: About as good as a stout can look. Jet black body with a dark brown one-finger head. After some decent retention it reduces to a small cap in the center with a ring around the edge. Some spotted lacing.

S: Very aromatic. Chocolate and coffee. Faint hops and licorice. A good dose of roasted dark malt.

T: Beautiful roasted malt is featured and interplays with the chocolate and coffee from the nose. Very nicely balanced..no one flavor dominates. Finishes very smooth and dry with slight warming but overall alcohol is very well hidden.

M: Heavy body and medium-low carbonation. Kinda chewy. The balance, mostly-hidden alcohol and smooth finish make this very drinkable for such a full-flavored beer.

O: I loved this. I’m assuming that this was more hop-forward when fresh, but I’m glad that I let this rest for awhile even though it was difficult to do so. It reminded me of some other classic English style stouts I’ve had.

Bottle (2011)

Urge Gastropub
San Diego, CA

Black throughout with a moderately sized dark brown head that eventually leaves the glass oily and spotted with lace.

Simple, straightforward, though appropriate aroma of roast, chocolate, and dark, black malt.

The flavor is similarly straightforward, though tasty. There's lots of roast and mild chocolate.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.

Good, straightforward imperial stout, though I think the farmhouse version is slightly better.

Another beer review written after the first one mysteriously disappeared. Pours black, brown head. Aroma was of heavily roasted malts, a little bit of chocolate malt.

Taste, same thing, a hefty dose of thick roasted malt, a smidge of smoke. Bitterness and hopping seems strong. Ample carbonation. Kind of an English yeast presence. Chewy and the alcohol doesn't seem all that high on the tongue, so its relatively drinkable. Pretty straightforward big stout: big malt, some chocolate, minimal coffee, high bitterness, good alcohol absorption.

Thanks to exiled for this evil looking guy.

Pours a thick black with a mildly fluffy mocha tan head that fades quickly to some lacing.

Smells like roasted malt, chocolate, pine trees and liquorice.

Tastes are tons of chocolate, coffee, light vanilla, more roasted malt and just a slight alcohol bite.

Mouthfeel is medium and creamy.

Overall is really good. I would most certainly drink this again.

Bottle shared by Grant – much obliged!

Pours black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of robust roasted malts with good amounts of dark chocolate aromas. Also present are slight amounts of smoke and lighter hints of tobacco.

Tastes similar to how it smells but slightly richer. Smooth roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly solid amounts of dark chocolate. Midway through the sip the flavor profile dries up a bit with hints of smoke. Near the end of the sip the smoke fades a bit, allowing slight earthy hops and tobacco flavors to carry through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It’s got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this is one of the better pure American Double Stouts I’ve had in a while. All the flavors are well integrated and it goes down smoothly. Worth a shot.
