Had on cask at the Draught House some months ago - thought I'd lost my notes but I found them in a pile of papers today. Deep joy.

A. An orangey-amber brew with a distinct cloudiness and next to no head, but that's cask for you.

S. Lots of musty funk, plenty of citrus, a little vinegar, and some tropical fruitiness.

T. Wow. I don't often give a beer five for taste, and from the bottle this is definitely a 4.5, but cask-conditioning has raised this beer into the stratosphere. All the sour characteristics are coming out in spades as are the dry, oaky flavours from the barrel-ageing. There's also a bitter hoppy finish that you don't get with Belgian sours.

M. The beer was nicely undercarbonated, as cask should be, but by no means flat.

O. As far as I recall I had three of these at the Draught House, and I can't even remember if it was served in pints or tulips or Jester King goblets. All I know is it was one of the most refreshing beers I've tasted in a long time and I couldn't get enough of it. Good job I was going home on the bus that night and didn't have to go to work next morning.

Pours cloudy orange, very close to an amber color. Nose is sour fruit, slight citrus and funk. I am not a true sour aficionado but I definitely enjoyed this. Taste is like the nose, sour fruit, funk and citrus notes. Ending in a dry white wine finish. Not sure if the whiskey barrel aging blend came out at all in this.

I stored the remaining beer in a swing-top half growler and had it the next day paired with chicken salad. I have to say it was still very drinkable; even more wine-like characteristics showed while enjoying it with dinner. It paired nicely with the homemade chicken salad.

Definitely a sipper but it was still a very interesting and enjoyable beer. Not too off putting at all if you are unfamiliar with the sour/farmhouse style beers. Jester King is widely known for these.

Seek it out if you can. It's available in Texas. Trade for it and see how it is. I hear it ages really well and I do see that as a good possibility although it would be best in a fridge to slow the souring bacteria growth.

750 ml poured into a Jester King Stemmed glass. Blend #5 - Sept. 5, 2013

A: Pours a beautiful golden almost orange color but extremely clear. Head is a one finger almost off white and kinda rocky with great lacing and amazing looking texture. Medium carbonation and looks extremely delicious.

S: As soon as I popped this baby open I got a huge hit of fruity Brett character with a tad bit of lactic tartness. Taking a closer sniff it almost appears mildly vinous but with a more Brett and spice forward thing going on from the wood. Aroma seems slightly sweet and fruity from the oak I'm guessing with slight notes of spicy vanilla.

T: Wow, very mildly sour but does have a pleasant refreshing tartness. A little bit of vanilla from the oak. What's great is it is very dry and has hints of Brett but mainly wood aged vanilla like character. The wood aging is definitely present and makes this beer what it is but could be better if it was a little restrained for my taste.

M: Dry and reminds me of drinking a white wine but with a very distinct american oak vanilla character that I'm enjoying but surprisingly only like in JK beers. Maybe I'm biased but its a more restrained oak character as compared to a beer aged in whiskey or bourbon.

O: An amazing beer from one of the sickest breweries and friendliest brewers in America. True fact. This is a refreshing and surprisingly drinkable brew for a 10.2% abv tag. Does not seem like it at all. That in itself is amazing. but regardless, if you ever find yourself in a situation where you can buy a bottle or two, or at least sample any JK beer, DO IT!

Poured from a bomber into a stemmed tulip glass and shared with friends.

Nice copper color with a big foamy head and decent lacing. The nose on this brew is strong and has a lot of sourness right out of the gate with a some funk; some oak and maybe some tart citrus rind, grass/hay, earthy. The flavor kicks like a mule though and is face-melting sour...but in a good way! This is a massively sour ale with plenty of funk and on the finish some more subtle notes of the farm, earth, grass and hay. A delicious beer, but I am glad I had help with this bottle!

Poured from the 750 bottle into Hill Farmstead stemware.
Pours a medium copper color with low head and amazing lacing.
Smells funky, some hayfield and earthiness.
Taste is big! Huge sourness that I loved. Some fruit, good malts as well.
Mouthfeel was awesome, flavors lingered. Dry, but not overly so.
Overall, I loved this beer. If you like sours, you'll love this one.

The beer is light copper with ample head. A bit of a gusher. Served at cellar temp, so maybe best to chill this a bit prior to opening. The aroma offers funk, oak, white wine, earth, residual citrus. Champagne and white wine notes amid an earthy, grainy body. Very nice. A great afternoon sipping beer, which is exactly what I did. Dry finish with lingering funk. Very enjoyable.

Pours golden with a slight head, a bit opaque very nice.

Smell is VERY hop driven but still maintains an incredible barrel aged sour character, peaches and citrus fruit with a very pleasant funk, wow!

Taste is very good but a bit too mineral/vitamin-taste or medicine mouth-driven with the alcohol coming through a bit, good but not fantastic compared to the nose.

Mouthfeel is as it should be.

Overall this is a great beer, not as outstanding as the Oi Oi in my opinion but the interplay between the hops and wild yeast is pretty incredible.

Thanks seblp for this lovely brew, unsure how to tell batch/bottled dates
The beer pours a tarnished copper that gushes thick foamy white head from the bottle, but settles into a residual thin halo around the perimeter. There's decent lacing and some flecks of sediment on the bottom. Buttery whiskey and vinous oak presence upfront, funky citrus, and some booze dominate the nose. However, the beer's citrusy tartness is amplified in the taste, leaving a strange orange juicy concentrate mix of spirit barrel caramel/vanilla and tannin bitterness. This beer is thick, medium bodied with modest bitterness, citrusy sweetness, a distinct alcohol presence towards the finish, and residual bitter/semi-sweet finish. The beer definitely reminds me of bottleworks 14 from cascade, and I'd say this is safely in second by comparison.

Jester King Brewery - Boxer's Revenge, poured into a Lawson's tulip.

Look - Pours a cloudy dark ruby amber with some floaties and a decent sized foamy head that retains some. Good lacing.

Smell - Smell is funky sour with some woodiness from barrel aging. Fruity and estery. Slightly sweet underneath.

Taste - Taste is quite fruity and tart with a slight funk (sour like white wine) and some hops on top. Not much oak woodiness but there is a touch.

Mouthfeel - Boozy and warm in the throat and stomach. Light bodied with low carbonation. Good drinkability.

Overall - This is a great brew. Definitely quite the acquired taste (wife hated it, you better like sour and funky!) but I dug it!

With an incredible sense of earthen tartness, dry wood character and a shard of robust caramel sweetness, Jester King now flirts with whisky and wine barrels in order to exacerbate the savory tartness and drunken oak character of that each barrel holds.

Its appearance is a rusty chestnut brown with a haze that denotes its unfiltered charm. White a billowing sandy-stained head forms upon, it settles with clinging lace that creates a spider webbing of creep. Strong in its retention the ale seems to defy logic as sourish ales aren't supposed to have this type of foam character.

Sharp and woody aromas abound as the scent of light caramel and toffee play out upon a pecan and cashew base. Lemon, crab apple and under-ripened berries spring to live as the beer's character opens up with a tarter note heading into taste. lightly pepper with wood spice, there's a soft cedar note that is charming and perfumy.

But to taste all that delicate wood character is cast aside as the sweetness is short and its acidic tone takes hold. After that, the middle palate is alive with lemon, berry, sour grape and green apple. As the ale closes, it does so with a winey tinge, a peppery spice and a dry wood tone that celebrates all things whisky and wine.

Its mouthfeel is rounded, smooth but even dry to start. As the ale travels cross the palate it becomes increasingly dry, woodish and somewhat powdery. Like fine Merlot, the bulk of its taste is much more appreciated in finish where the perfume and cedar return and reward the palate.

Boxers Revenge is a masterfully blended ale that doesn't push the barrel aging too far but allows them to make a meaningful mark upon the ale with nuances of both wine and whisky. Despite its complexity, it's a highly palatable ale that is begging for cedar plank salmon and pecan pie!

unique brew here, even in the out there context of wilds anyway, this is just different. tons of yeast floaters snowglobe style in a hazy brown amber liquid with an inch of thick white head and an aroma of heavy whiskey barrels and farmy yeast. fruity notes, apples and pears, give it a sweetness, while bacterial sour notes dry it out. as far as the flavor goes, its complex as anything and well built, but im not sure the right barrel was chosen to compliment the beer itself. i miss the subtle pucker and malt balance. i get a ton of vanilla, and it clashes with the sour a bit. getting more and more funky as it warms, the alcohol strength remains well hidden, a real impressive feature of this slightly confused but very intriguing brew. fuller bodied for a sour type, and not quite as well carbonated, but the feel works fine. overall this is a one of a kind beer, but for 16 bucks a bottle its not good enough for me to justify another bottle.

Poured into a standard tulip glass.

Appearance: (4)
Pours an opaque light brown/amber with some nice orange highlights. An off white, tightly bubbled 2 finger head quickly forms and recedes at a good pace. The head leaves little to no lacing as it recedes.

Aroma: (4.25)
As as the beer is poured, huge aromas of ripe red berries fill your nostrils. Notes of juicy peach, pineapple and blood orange begin to surface alongside the berries as beer warms. A lactic tartness makes itself know immediately with it's characteristics of cherry pie filling and plum skin. There is a mild, musty barnyard funkiness alongside the mostly fruit forward nose. Along with some faint bread-y-ness, some soft notes vanilla and coconut from the bourbon and wine barrels round out the nose.

Taste: (3.75)
Immediately, as soon as the beer lands on your palate, you're blasted with clean, lactic acidity; predominately notes of tart cherries, berries and lemon juice. Following this tartness are some notes of citrus and a lightly herbal hop character. The beer finishes dry, tart and bitter with a touch of bready maltiness. Long, lingering notes of bitter lemon peel, faint musty earth, coconut, vanilla and wood tannins. A tad boozy on the back end; noticeable bourbon barrel characteristics.

Mouthfeel: (4.25)
Heavy bodied with a creamy texture. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: (3.75)
A wonderfully aromatic sour.; definitely one of the fruit forward(without having actual fruit added) that I've ever smelled. Unfortunately, most of the fruity aromatics are not carried over in taste; Most of the juicy, tropical yeast driven characteristics that are there in taste initially, are quickly overwhelmed by barrel presence and hop character. This is a very unique sour beer.

Murky like muddy pond water, orangish brown color in the light, with two fingers of foam initially. Sticky sheets of foam in the glass, wispy skim across the surface.

Nicely woody aroma, lightly fruity with some citrus and vaguely tropical notes. Lightly acetic. First impression is more Oud Bruin than anything.

Taste has some sharper acetic acid initially, moving into tannic bitterness, with flashes of fruity citrus in the middle and trace farmhouse funk. Aftertaste of white grape and starfruit. Carb seems low, the acidity carries it along though. Kinda reminded me of a La Folie/Le Terroir blend.

Perfect pairing with Humboldt Fog.

A - Pours a hazy, orange color with a foamy off-white head. Slight lacing on the glass like ocean spray.

S - Right away I get a nice sour cherry, green apple and dry white wine aroma that quickly leads to wet hay and barnyard funk. I love the competing balance of tart and funk. The alcohol is just barely detectable, but there's a slight heat on the nose.

T - Starts with green apple, lemons and some dry, sour grapes followed by Brett and an earthy, wood characteristic. Finishes with a sharp, peppery bite. There's no discernible alcohol which is incredible given it's 10.2%. There are so many flavors going on and the balance between tart and funk is great.

M - Moderate carbonation that just provides a bit of a prickly bite.

O - This is delicious and wonderful. Tart but still retains that distinct Jester King funk from the yeast. I could probably spend more time trying to discern some of the flavors, but I'd rather just enjoy without thinking about it too much.

Fantastic!
Coloration remains constant with a slightly soapier bubble. The funk has taken on hints of wet hay and horse blanket, all in a good way, with a slight bit of stinky cheese in the back. It’s smoothly sippable and slightly tart, with a great carbonation that keeps it light. I will miss this beer!

Update: Boxer’s Revenge from 4/12, enjoyed 1/13.
This beer has held up exceptionally well, with a mild funk, light carbonation and pleasing tartness. Certainly one where time has been kind to it, and one which very well could continue to evolve.

This pours a light ruddy-golden amber with foam bubbles that quickly dissipate. A mild wild ale? Certainly it doesn’t have an overpowering aroma but rather it’s lightly funky, with some wet hay and funky cheese in the next room over coming across. Palatewise it’s pleasingly tart with a bit of sour bite and some more wet hay on the finish. Cuts through a spicy and heavy meal with the greatest of ease. Great finish. Still wonderful.

Previously, from Tap: This pours a ruddy ruby-amber color with thin lacing. It has an incredible aroma, amazingly tart and sour with an incredible flavor and a funky, dry finish. I get an assertive mouthpuckering tartness up front and a sharp intensity of tastes which cut like a samurai’s blade. No hint of it’s ABV even as it warms. Fantastic! Utterly delicious!

750ml bottle. A wild Texas ale, aged in wine and whisky barrels - sign me the fuck up. Thanks to Phyl21ca for the trade.

This beer pours a rather cloudy medium orange-amber hue, with two fingers of wanly puffy, yet still tightly foamy off-white head, which leaves some roiling ocean spray lace around the glass as it slowly abates.

It smells of tart, emasculated cherry and apple fruit, earthy barnyard funk, biscuity sourdough bread malt, a white wine barrel treatment fruitiness, a hint of vanilla-infused barrel woodiness, and some further tropical fruit notes. The taste is surprisingly less sour, the fruitiness spreading its wings a bit, the yeasty funk carrying on, a bready pale malt emerging, some barrel originating, tart wine (Sauv Blanc immediately comes to mind) acidity arising, with a weak earthy, besotted leafy hoppiness. A crazy lack of awareness of the heady ABV slowly becomes apparent, possibly due to the otherwise non-existent whiskey notes.

The carbonation is quite mild, and generally frothy when it chooses not to be, the body on the south side of medium weight, and as smooth as such an affair can aspire to be. It finishes off-dry, barely, the neutered sweetness just that - dead, amongst the wood, da funk, the yeast, and the cowering native hops.

A pretty well rendered affair, with so much exploratory brewing prowess, all of which falls suitably in line. Woody, funky, fruity, and rather pleasantly not boozy - that, mis amigos, is the most newsworthy effect here, amongst stiff competition. Totally worthy of investigating - ok, drinking carefully, should you get the chance.

From Slowbeer no BB

A - clear light copper, one finger head, spotty lace

S - dank, earthy, musty. Citrus notes.

T - funk, earthy notes, barnyard, tinned pineapple. Integrated, and some oak/wood on palate. Very vinous, like an oaked chardonnay from the 90s. However, basically the dry finish is the dominant element

M - light carbonation for style, could do with a bit more zing. ABV 100% hidden.

O - I was expecting a flavour bomb given the ABV. Nope, think subtle and complex. And dry. Not my first Jester King and i suspect won't be buying any more due to over-dry finish across their range. I disagree with suggested serving temp of 50-55, seems to be best chilled.

The brew is aged in oak whiskey and wine barrels with multiple strains of wild yeast and bacteria and exudes a rustic earthiness as soon as you open the bottle. The beer holds a myriad of flavors that meld into a wonderful and unique experience. You can definitely pick up the whiskey and wine oak aging on top of the funky sourness and earthy barnyard qualities. Wrapping all these flavors is a hop blanket that weaves in and out of all the flavors and lingers on your palate. This is just an all around fantastic beer. None of the flavors overpower you, the sour fruits and barnyard funk hit the right notes with the hoppy bitterness and oak keeping everything in tune. Surprisingly smooth and drinkable for such a high ABV brew and opening my palate to a larger world of sour and funky beers.

Got in a trade with Cyde. 750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours moderately hazy orange amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big orange zest, lemon zest, pear, pineapple, peach, grapefruit, clove, oak, floral, white wine, grass, pepper, bread, funk, light caramel, and spicy yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good complexity and balance of hop, yeast, and barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of big orange zest, lemon zest, pineapple, peach, pear, grapefruit, clove, oak, pepper, floral, white wine, grass, light caramel, herbal, funk, and spicy yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pear, pineapple, peach, clove, oak, pepper, white wine, floral, funk, and spicy yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of hop, yeast, and barrel flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with an acidic, moderately crisp, slick, and earthy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent wild ale! All around great balance and complexity of hop, barrel, and yeast/brett flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for being over 10%. A very enjoyable offering.

750ml bottle poured into a snifter. The brew appears a clear copper color with a white froth that paints the glass with a full wall of lace.

The smell is quite wild and enjoyable with a very fruity, lemony and tropical feel. Some oak suggestions mildly boozy with caramel and hints of vanilla sweetness.

The flavor includes vanilla with lemony lacto tartness. Some bittering hops give way to tangy vinous notes. Funk and raw oak and some tannins tingle with alcohol and a raw oaky character towards the back.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is boozy yet the barrel quakity is evident and interesting. I am typically distracted and find high alcohol in wild beers to be clashing. However, it really worked in this brew.

Two small tasting cups at Cotteridge Wine during a 6th July Black Country Bus Trip (sorry if I stole someones cup, but I needed two to rate/review it correctly).

Dark yellow/orange body that was hazy: the head never really stood a chance with so many small cups to fill from each bottle.

Lemon tree aroma and also in the taste: a bit more complicated than that but a ’Lemon tree’ has complex smells, esters and thoughts.

A bit too sour for my palate but I know plenty of ’sour pussies’ who would love this. I’ve tried to score objectively.

Served from bottle into a Mikkeller Teku. Poured a vibrant yellow-orange with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount vey slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, orange zest, citrus, orange soda, and funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, earth, funk, citrus, orange zest, orange, and subtle spice. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. The orange note I picked up on in this one was really quite nice and made this one quite easy to drink. The funk was definitely present throughout the glass which was very well incorporated in all aspects. This one was quite easy to drink and refreshing. Definitely a well done brew that I am glad that I got the chance to try and would love to do so again.

Appearance: Deep. cloudy, hazy golden orange - pours with a creamy white head, slowly fades to a solid, white cap - leaves some nice patches of lacing

Smell: Weird and wild, which apparently is common across Jester King saisons/wild ales - some interesting fruity notes - light fruits, with some citrus - some interesting, woody, barrel... things - doesn't smell like the woody "spirals" like some other Jester King beers, but rather some old oak and some white wine - a lot of yeasty, tart, funky, sour aromas here

Taste: Damp, wet, lactic sourness and a lot of earthy, dirty, saison-like flavors - some barnyard, tart, yeasty dryness - oak, and a lot of white wine flavor - some whiskey in the background - some sourness, but this is more funky saison than a sour - caramel grains, pale malts - dirty, earthy, damp flavors, but it finishes dry and pretty clean

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, mostly dry finish

Overall: Revenge is ours?

This is a strange beer... The previous sentence loses some significance considering I've pretty much said the same thing about every single Jester King beer. Personally, I think this is somewhere between an American Wild and an American Saison. There's a lot of wood, white wine, tart, funk, and barrel in here. Definitely worth a checking out.

Appearance: Hazy dark gold. Head is white and starts off pillowy. Drops to a small collar and small wispy cap. No lacing. Slightly high carbonation on the pour.

Smell: Funky and tart. Some lemon, tangerine, orange, and pine. A ton of fruit. Nice influenced of the barrels, pushing some.vanilla and oak. Slightly vinous. Grape skin and wet funk yeast. Some damp hay and musty earth. So much muchness. Floral. A bit lactic with some.sharp citric bite.

Taste: Funky tart. Damp earth. Herbal dirt. Some floral elements. Tons of barrel influence. saturated with oak. Vanilla, toffee, caramel, grape skin, and damp grass. Musty hay and basement. Light pale maltiness. Some underlying sweetness. Peach, mango, very tropical. Underlying spiciness.

Mouthfeel: Runs on the lighter side of medium. Moderate carbonation that runs a bit lighter than I expected given the pour. Nice and clean with a slightly dry finish overall.

Overall: You're not Batman!

Decent. Not the best offering I've had from Jester King, but complex. A bit muddled in terms of the barrel and yeast influence.

Thanks again to poetryandbeer for the huge Jester King box. Boxer's Revenge pours completely opaque; sunburst orange around the edges, with a deeper and more dense brown-ish color towards the core. The three-quarter inch head fades to a chunky layer pretty quickly and leaves a merely spot or two of lacing near the top of the glass on the way down. Kind of an ugly beer, but you know the story of the ugly duckling.

The first whiff reveals a nice, complex bout of tart and funk, layered with various things such as wet hay, apple skins, wine-like booze, oak, lactic acid, grapes, and many other fruits which are kind of hard to exactly pinpoint. Definitely a lot going on here, almost too much to get a firm handle on, even. Nice tartness from the fruit and a good, wet-blanket sort of funkiness from the yeast that seem to balance nicely.

Jester King tastes similar to how it smells, but it also tastes quite heavy, or at least heavier than most wild ales I've had. And by heavy, I mean it tastes "big". It's got a strong booziness that warms up over time and gets even stronger, and it sits pretty heavily on your guts. It wasn't until after the first few sips that Mike and I looked at the bottle and realized it was 10.2% ABV... I guess that explains it.

The flavor profile is very similar to the aroma, coming through hard with apple skins, tropical fruits, grapes, lactic acidity, some mild wine-like vinegar, oak, wet hay, musty barnyard, and a dry, white wine-like finish. The booziness is mostly akin to a heavy wine, although there are some very faint whiskey tones that tend to bounce in and out. Pretty heavily bodied for a wild ale. Thick and robust mouth feel with medium-high carbonation.

Pretty tasty wild ale with a tartness that wasn't overboard and a funkiness that wasn't too crazy either. Just a nice blend of the two that's sure to please any fan of the style. I will say, the heaviness of the booze eventually started to take a toll on my palate; this beer would be difficult to drink in large quantities. Luckily, I had someone to split it with, but even a 12 oz pour was quite a bit. Good beer, but better in smaller quantities for sure.
