750 ml bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: Orange and yellow cloudy beer with a small head. The head doesnt dissipate.
S: A mix of IPA and saison, some minor hop and pine notes combine with an earthy lemon flavor, very cool.
T: A minor hoppy beer on the front blends into an saison on the end. Some hop notes but not too many ending with a perfect saison. Very few if any malt notes.
M: A lot more hops, perfectly balanced and some minor lemon notes on the end.
O: Really good and interesting. I think this is the most interesting beer Ive had this year and Im very excited to try other JK beers.

On tap at the Draught House 43rd Anniversary Party. I really have no idea which category to put this in. It is the standard Wytchmaker recipe, with the only difference being they use a French saison yeast rather than their standard ale yeast.

The beer pours a slightly hazy copper to amber color with a white head. The aroma has some nice orange citrus and resinous pine notes, as well as some biscuit malt, Belgian yeast and spice notes. It smells about like I expected, a rye IPA blended with a saison.

The flavor is also about what I expected. The biscuit malt and rye are complimented by nicely by the hop flavors of citrus and pine. The saison yeast really drys out the beer and adds some crispness to it. There is a slight bit of funk from the yeast, which I expected from a beer with farmhouse in the name. Overall, an interesting combination of flavors that I think works quite well.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

appearance - pours a deep orange, large head, nice lace.

smell - piney hops, earthy citrus, fruity.

taste - starts out as an ipa and finishes as a saison.

mouthfeel - smooth...a bit light for me.

overall - only JK beer i brought back from texas. i like what they did with it, and really enjoy and respect the style. with that being said, I enjoy some other beers of this style a bit better.

I've been so excited about this release, and pleased to grab a bottle today at HEB Bunker Hill. Poured from bottle into my Jester King Farmhouse glass. Pours a nearly transparent dark orange color, about a finger of white fluffy head. VERY different from the previous Wytchmaker version in appearance and carbonation. Smell- wet grass, barnyard funk! juicy fruit, almost a candied orange smell. Tropical mango. A marraige of funky and tropical hops. Beautiful. Giving smell alone a 5. Taste- wet cut grass, some barnyard funk and some bitterness- a complex blend of flavor. Lovely malt sweetness and tropical hops- mango, orange rind all over my teeth. This is tremendously more complex and clean with flavors than the original Wytchmaker. Just an amazing brew. Bravo.

750ml bottle. More creepy label imagery from this brewery, with the titular witch seemingly following me with her malevalent eyes.

This beer pours a glassy, medium golden amber hue, with two fingers of foamy, effervescent off-white head, which leaves a nice array of cloudform lace rings around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of mildly sour, peppery rye grain, dried orchard fruit, tart citrus and pine hop notes, and a further dank leafiness. The taste is bitter citrus pith, pine needles, somewhat funky yeast, spicy rye malt, a general sugary sweetness, and more earthy mustiness. The extra few points of booze do well to stay entirely under the radar.

The carbonation is a tad edgy, but softens as it goes, the body just on the light side of medium weight, and actually pretty smooth. It finishes sweet, but with a still pungent melange of bitter hop, spicy grain, and musty, funky earthiness.

A decent yeast-altered Yankee IPA, so much so, that I feel the American theme becoming washed out, as the Belgian character of the yeast outshines the rye malt. Ipso facto, Belgian IPA would likely be a better classification for this offering.

Fun drinkable mixture of saison yeast, citrus,bold hops and some rye. Interesting spicy (and a bit funky) aroma. An enormous head on cloudy yellow body.Smooth mouthfeel, good drinkability.Suitably carbonated.Overall something different but for summer sure why not.

Cloudy golden, with a plus-size head of off-white carbonation. Lovely lace.

Nose is oddly tangy -- the rye adds a sharp, spicy aroma. Actually, I get this more than a hoppy scent. Not a bad thing.

Taste is a weird mix of spicy malts and citrus hoppiness. Actually, this drinks very smooth, with a sharp and almost sour finish. A definite unique flavor profile for a rye pale ale, and a very tasty, enjoyable brew. Very nice.

Jester King - Wytchmaker [Farmhouse Rye IPA] (750ml --->Dogfish Head Curved Pint Glass : 7.3% ABV : 55 IBU : FG 1.000)

When popping the cap in this beer, it barely made a sound, but I set it down for a second and it began foaming over like CRAZY!! So needless to say it was somewhat unexpected and leads me to believe this could be HIGHLY overcarbonated, but we shall see... It pours a fairly hazy gold with about a 2 inch head that it supported by plenty of carbonation, it has left a great deal of lacing and quite the retentive cap!! First on the nose is a nice strong spicy funk, with some fresh bananabread in there as well, playing backup... First taste is again the spicy funk, but it's very approachable and blends well with soft citrus/mango hop flavors also there... Mid palate the bitterness kicks in and brings with it some earthy grass notes, but finishes rather smooth with a few faint hints of orange zest and bananabread again... Mouthfeel on the beer is excellent as it suited the flavors very nicely, and varied from what it's visual cues were indicating it would be like... It didn't feel overcarbonated, and in fact finished satiny smooth, which was delightfully pleasant... Overall I'm extremely pleased with this beer, all of its' elements harmonized very well and am looking forward to trying more from this brewery... Another great brew - Cheers!!

Not sure I'd ever reach for this again if I was looking for an IPA. However, I would 100% drink this again.

This is dirty looking. I'm a huge proponent of brite beer and this is cloudy, opaque. Nicely colored and the head is very fluffy, leaves a good trail of sticky lacing.

The most evident part of IPA rears it's head straight from the bottle when it first opens with distinct hops aromas that really spreads its wings. Underneath you get the first inkling that this will not be a typical

The taste is heavily influenced by the Belgian flavors, banana, clove, bread. There is a lightly sweet malt portion and there are unmistakable hop notes throughout.

The mouthfeel is also impacted here, a more full bodied, richer body than is typical in an American IPA. There is no lightness to the body, or oil characteristic and the typical crisp bitter finish is absent.

Not sure what the underlying IPA tastes like, but this is a bit far from what I would expect when I reach for a bottle of this style. It's interesting, slightly different and enjoyable. That said, rating it for an IPA, this doesn't really hit the style better than average.

Pours amber with a large lasting head.
Nose shows floral and light fruity apple/pear notes along with saison yeast and doughy characters.
Very saison-like flavours. Dry with fruity notes and high mineral content. A fair whack of hops with a big grapefruity bitterness.
Carbonation seems excessive.

A: The beer pours a dark clear golden body with a thick creamy light tan head that slowly fades away and leaves a lot of lacing on the glass.

S: I am picking up a strong amount of spicy and floral hops, some grain and a strong amount of rye.

T: This is a really strange flavor IPA. I get a nice amount of hops and it tastes really good at first, but the farmhouse yeast starts to come in and really changes the flavor. The flavor goes from sweet to just a weird funk that I cant really describe. The rye flavor is there too and I just dont really know what to think about the flavor of this beer.

M: The beer is super easy to drink and has a good amount of carbonation. There is a strong amount of crispness on the back of the throat.

O: This is just one of those weird beers I cant really get my mind around. BUT that is how Jester King does things. They are not afraid to try anything and I give them mad respect for that... On the other hand, I think they took a major step back on this IPA because the original recipe was much better.

A: The beer is hazy dark yellow in color and poured with a finger high frothy white head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a short head covering the surface along with lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light aromas of earthy yeast in the nose along with hints of rye.
T: like the smell, the taste is very earthy and has some notes of caramel malts and hints of bitterness from the hops and spiciness from the rye.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting farmhouse beer that tastes like a hybrid between a saison and a rye beer. It is also a nice choice if you like earthy aromas and flavors.

Any beer enthusiast that is well-versed in Jester King would probably consider an IPA, of any extreme, to be rather elementary for the talent behind the Texas brewery. However, Stuffings and the crew throw a farmhouse-inspired Rye IPA into their catalog and the results are nothing short of avant-garde. It pours a frothy and plentiful white head that remains steadfast and dense, leaving heavy, heavy lace atop a murky body. The aroma is a balance of hoppy, citrus aroma balancing floral and pine scents, and leaving the enthusiasts with phenols on the undertone. As far as taste goes, expect a balanced and moderate hop profile with a tightly-wound bitter and dry finish. The body, a medial mass is filled with carbonation, yet never problematic.

It's interesting, it's complex, and it's living up to the so-called standard we all expect from Stuffings.

A: pours a cloudy and hazed yellowish brown with a two finger rocky off white head
S: smells sweet with notes of grapefruit, pine, and some spice from the rye malt. a little bit of peppery yeastyness comes through as well
T: rye up front with some nice citrus and pine hop yeast as well with a nice floral hop kick in the finish with some yeast flavor
M: medium body with slightly prickly carb
O: a nice rye IPA with good flavors that dares to be a little bit different. I like it.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours a slightly hazy orange-amber with moderate carbonation producing a 2-3 inch cream-colored head.
S: Spicy rye and hops predominate. Some black pepper and citrus. An herbal note with a hint of mint too.
T: Hops, hops, and more hops (pine, citrus, and herbal). Overly done. Drowns out the rest--spicy rye and hint of black pepper. Perhaps some time will allow this one to settle down a bit.
M: Sharp and bitter hops. Spicy hops and rye. Light-medium body.
D: Drinkable if you love an absolute truckload of hops...which I don't. A bit of a disappointment from an otherwise solid brewery.

Straight pour from a 750ml pry-off champagne bottle to my nice little Belgian Independence Day stemmed tulip. No bottle dating visible, but this was brought to me by a Texan friend about three weeks prior, so I imagine it’s relatively fresh.

Appearance (4.5): Nice, very hazy dark honey-colored body with a light tan head of fine bubbles that just doesn’t die down. Starts at two fingers, and takes forever going down. Some thick lacing on the sides, very nice appearance.

Smell (4.0): Very interesting mix of light fruit and wet hay—classic musty brett character, not particularly strong but well-defined. Not an IPA aroma, but definitely a farmhouse aroma.

Taste (4.0): Malt character is actually pretty subtle, but the rye character is clear. Beyond that, the flavor is mainly dominated by the brett character, which is well-proportioned—not too musty, not too pungent, just a straight-forward presentation of basic wet hay and a mild sour character. Some grassy, slightly fruity hops come through, too. Finish is slightly sour, but very mildly so. Grows on me as it warms.

Mouthfeel (3.0): Surprisingly light body with a very mild carbonation that tingles very lightly. Dry finish, not bad. Nothing objectionable, but nothing notable for either a farmhouse or an IPA mouthfeel. Wild ale maybe, but neither farmhouse or IPA.

Overall (3.5): This is a good beer and I’m glad to have gotten the chance to try it, and I definitely want to get some more Jester King in my life. Still, I’m not sure this bottle hit the mark for either a farmhouse beer or an IPA—but it’s a decent hybrid, either way. I think a fresher hop profile (IPA), a dryer and more active body (farmhouse / saison), and a deeper funk (brett) would benefit this beer, but the state it was in tonight was not far enough in any of those directions to really be memorable.

N: Grassy and herbal and floral, slightly spicy and yeasty, trace cherry fruit bubblegum notes.

T: Herbal, spicy rye malts combined with biscuity yeast. Slightly funky and musty but mainly saison-like. Some floral hops on the finish.

M: Medium carbonation and body. Semi-dry finish.

O: Interesting melding of rye, hops, and yeast makes this a unique and interesting offering.

Pours a slightly hazy copper to amber color with a fluffy, semi-sticky looking white head. Spotty, soapy, sticky lacing (thanks to the rye malt) is left along the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Aromas begin quite balanced overall with equal amounts of spicy rye malt, some lesser toasted breadiness and light citrus, pine and earthy hoppiness. As it warms I get more of the Farmhouse yeast semi-funky esters and more spice notes which could be more rye or from the phenolic Belgian Yeast.

The tastes begin with the same toasty, bready, biscuit maltiness and the more predominant spicy rye maltiness. Generic citrus and earthy hop flavor combines with the Farmhouse yeast induced earthy, slight hay-like flavors. The saison yeast really drys out the beer and adds some crispness to the finish. There is a slight bit of funk from the yeast, which I expected from a beer with farmhouse in the name.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Finish is semi-dry thanks the yeast ans semi-spicy thanks to the rye malt.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. Perfect blend of Rye IPA and Belgian Farmhouse flavors. The yeast esters or spicy rye flavors could easily over power each other or not work well together, but here they do and it makes it a well balanced winner I wouldn't mind having in the future.

From my tasting notes: The Wytchmakerr poured a deep gold with a full white fluffy head while the aroma had citrus hops with a hint of pineapple and spice. The flavor is where the farmhouse yeast began to assert itself. The fruity citrus and piney hops mixed with the spicy rye flavors all rode a wave of slight barnyard and funk characteristics. There were so many dynamic flavors intertwined into a bold and balance brew. I know the farmhouse yeast flavors can be a love or hate relationship with some, but I loved it.

A: Large foamy head. Solid beer ring lacing.

S: Woody, pungent (from the rye I suppose), and pine.

T: Wood aged hops and rye bread.

M: Thick, syrupy, hop character.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is good. Nice head and lacing. Nose is hoppy and pungent with a nice wood aged effect. Woody hops and rye bread. Overall, this is really good quaff.

A- Pours a dark orange with a BIG WHITE HEAD. I don't know what it is about Jester King, all their beers produce huge heads. Every time I poured it in a glass, the head in the bomber would constantly overflow from the bottle...it kind of got annoying. Anyways, expect HUGE heads from Jester King brews.

S- Orange Juice and some honey. It was rather pleasant.

T- A good strong citrus taste of grapefruit and lemons with a malty backbone and a good hop bite. There's also a HINT of breadiness which Im assuming is from the rye but eh, I really dont taste the rye.

Food Pairing- Due to the strong citrus notes this beer would pair well with some fish, specifically a white fish. Possibly a bass with some couscous and vegetables.

Pours a hazy orange with hints of red. Thick foamy white head. The smell is the strongest part. Farmhouse funk. Citrus. Grass. Hops. Yeast. Grass. The taste follows suit. Spicy citrus hops and rye bitterness. Grassy, yeasty hoppy goodness. Labeled as a farmhouse ipa and it fits this description perfectly. The combination of hops and farmhouse flavors compliment nicely.

As usual, JK knocks it out of the park yet again. A very solid hybrid that is reasonably priced

4 oz cask pour into a wine glass at Jester King Brewery. Lightly hazy, light gold with slight pink hue; no head but a little lacing and hazy white top. Lots of sour, funky farmhouse notes in the aroma. Tart, white wine flavors tempered by herbal, bitter hops and spicy rye.
