Jester King Brewery "Wytchmaker"

Notes: Hazy golden-orange body beneath a 2 finger thick head of bright white froth. Earthy and floral in the nose... not sure if that earthiness is from rye or yeast, probably yeast. Subtly peppery/spicy. Flavor brings in some not particularly defined fruit that hints at tropical/citrus, and a biscuity/bready maltiness with the expected rye component, although far from bold. Slight funkiness like wet hay and damp earth. Dry, underlying pine component. Solid bitterness, or is that seemingly so because of an acidic edge? Remarkably balanced, nothing seems to stray too far from center. It seems very much the same from start to finish but there are slight bumps. Medium-light in body and superbly smooth (not sure if that's because of the cask pour). Silky. Enjoyable. More of a 'sit back and relax' sipper in my eyes than might be expected of a "rye IPA".

This is something special, without doubt. It has great aesthetics, and even though I'm not a yeast fan, I can appreciate this one. It isn't a true IPA, but the flavors are complex enough to really entertain. I'm not sure I'll seek it out again, but it is certainly worth trying. A really unique offering from Jester King.

Over carbonated. Gusher. Bust free homie. I don't know what that smell was, but it isn't good. Farts and rye left under a wet hay bale.

Taste was lacking hops. Super malty. Offputting. Ugly copper bitterness and heavy wet wood mouthfeel.

Pick up a dozen different flavors and this is my second one. I poured ithis brew into a St feuillen glass and it smells sweet and barnyard funky.it poured a dark golden color with about 3 inches of a white head with lots of lacing,. It's an easy drinker and the brew is full of a citrus and rye taste. It has a good feel with the tanons and it's overall a quite enjoyable brew.

My second beer from Jester King and another amazingly different beer from them. Unfortunately I was only able to get two brought up from Dallas and I'm wishing I had more because this Watchmaker is phenomenal!

A: Had a very milky orange look to it with a nice steady head.

S: Right of the bat you can smell the malts fused with rye, slight citric fruits notes.

T: At first you get a mouthful of fruits blended in with a nice rye overtone and hops. Well carbonated beer, easy to drink and definitely enjoyable.

O: Tops the Noble King in my opinion but they are both fantastic brews. Definitely recommend Jester King to anyone looking to try a different funky beer!

L: An opaque medium amber/light brown with some nice lacing.

S: Strong rye spicy aromas with a sweet rye-like maltiness. Peppery and herbal, with some American hop varieties balanced by a Belgian spiciness/funk. Reminiscent of many Belgian/IPA crossbreeds I’ve had but more nuanced and less gooseberry smell.

T: American IPA and saison qualities duke it out for domination of this beer’s character. Hops are not citrusy, but certainly resinous and bitter. Also some unwelcomed herb-like bitterness that reminds me of DFH’s Saison du BUFF and really lingers on. Rather dry throughout, with rye character and a general funkiness coming through.

F: Medium body with surprisingly little carbonation—could use a bit more, especially for a bottle conditioned Belgian[like] style. Leaves a slight slickness on the palate and a decent amount of alcoholic/rye warmth.

O: A very unique and quite nice beer. It could use a little tweaking to get rid of the herbal/medicinal bitter quality, but pretty good nonetheless and I could see this going great with a meal.

Jester King is, well, the king of developing a narrative for each of their brews. The concept behind Wytchmaker (Ergot-infected Rye was the culprit behind the mass hysteria at the Salem Witch Trials) is particularly on point. This beer is just "infected" (not with Ergot...fortunately) enough to be complex yet wonderfully drinkable. Funky fresh at its best.

Rustic orange with a slight haze, abundant carbonation that settles relatively quickly. Smell has distinctive JK markings - warm barn, hay, crushed citrus. But a unique rye malt spice note, rye bread, in the background. This comes forward in the taste making it funky and savory. Would go great with fall meals; a thanksgiving beer perhaps. Body is medium, round. lingering funky haybale and rye.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.
LOOK: Three finger's worth of thick, dense, white foam is formed after the pour. After two and a half minutes, it finally subsides to a finger's worth (amazing retention rate). Dark yellow in color. Rising bubbles remain in high amounts even after the head settles. Lacing is thick and high.
SMELL: Mild aromas of apricots, peaches, mangos, papayas, grapefruit, oranges, malted barley, and spicy rye all mix together to create a well-balanced aroma. Hints of sour yeast and alcohol can also be detected.
TASTE: Strong fruit flavors enter initially immediately followed by mild spicy rye and subtle malted barley flavors. As all flavors persist, mild bitter hop flavors enter along with hints of sour yeast.
FEEL: Full-bodied with a subtle amount of carbonation. This goes down incredibly creamy and smooth, but thick. Kinda like a slightly watered-down syrup. Finish is overly dry like most IPAs.
NOTE: The rye was a unique addition to this IPA. I was expecting to get more of the Jester King yeast flavor than what this one offered. Also, the bitter finish was a tad bit too much for me. Not a huge fan of the bitterness.

Hazy golden in color with a silky white head that holds onto the top for the whole glass. The nose is bright and floral with plenty of hops mixed with a sweetness I can't identify. The flavors start as IPA and quickly switch to a strong yeasty funk. It is almost too much funk such that the beer steps too far from IPA, but other sips seem to flow nicely. Feel is dry and spicy typical of a funky saison.

on tap at the tap and handle in fort collins, what a treat this is, i keep missing out on the bottles when they come to town, so this is fun. its super clear, especially for a jester king wild ale, golden and radiant, not at all hazy. a nose thats real funked out, some real tangy lacto sourness to it, but in jester king fashion, its a saison too, very dynamic on the yeast and bugs, these guys do that as well or better than anyone. the rye part is there, its killer too, spice that works with the saison side of the yeast, and the texture to make it big enough for its abv and flavor depth. the ipa side though, not so much. i find this only a little hoppy, and its all finishing hops, minimal bitterness, and not overly pungent at all. its okay though, there are enough other flavors going on here that it isnt missed, and although more hops might make this delicious too, it really doesnt miss them. the yeast for me is what makes this beer, and it may be oak aged, as it had a definite wood profile to it, natural and a little sweet in the middle, but very mature and rustic. carbonation may be just a tad low on it, but the acidity with all the flavor is just right. a real cool take on a rye beer, as classy as all the jester king stuff, one of my first on draft from them, and a real nice treat. oh man, i love these guys!!!

Pours a very cloudy golden color with virtually no head. A small half foamy, half carbonated head started after finished pouring, but head retention is minimal as is lacing. Has that typical Brett aroma with slight citrus and grape. Light bodied, strong Brett taste with some white wine at the. There is a mild hop to it, but not enough to really call this an IPA. Has a very tart, kind of soapy aftertaste. Not bad, but I was expecting more from this beer, given that IPAs are my favorite style.

Jester King - Wytchmaker [Farmhouse Rye IPA] (750ml --->Dogfish Head Curved Pint Glass : 7.3% ABV : 55 IBU : FG 1.000)

When popping the cap in this beer, it barely made a sound, but I set it down for a second and it began foaming over like CRAZY!! So needless to say it was somewhat unexpected and leads me to believe this could be HIGHLY overcarbonated, but we shall see... It pours a fairly hazy gold with about a 2 inch head that it supported by plenty of carbonation, it has left a great deal of lacing and quite the retentive cap!! First on the nose is a nice strong spicy funk, with some fresh bananabread in there as well, playing backup... First taste is again the spicy funk, but it's very approachable and blends well with soft citrus/mango hop flavors also there... Mid palate the bitterness kicks in and brings with it some earthy grass notes, but finishes rather smooth with a few faint hints of orange zest and bananabread again... Mouthfeel on the beer is excellent as it suited the flavors very nicely, and varied from what it's visual cues were indicating it would be like... It didn't feel overcarbonated, and in fact finished satiny smooth, which was delightfully pleasant... Overall I'm extremely pleased with this beer, all of its' elements harmonized very well and am looking forward to trying more from this brewery... Another great brew - Cheers!!

4 oz cask pour into a wine glass at Jester King Brewery. Lightly hazy, light gold with slight pink hue; no head but a little lacing and hazy white top. Lots of sour, funky farmhouse notes in the aroma. Tart, white wine flavors tempered by herbal, bitter hops and spicy rye.

(Tried again 03-Apr-15, 1 pt 9.4 oz bottle, marked "BATCH # 12 - JULY 28, 2014", poured into a Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glass. Tart and fruity, balanced by earthiness and minerals and rye spice. Farm funk and mild hop notes. Earthier and fruitier than cask batch tried at brewery.)

Pours a hazy orange with hints of red. Thick foamy white head. The smell is the strongest part. Farmhouse funk. Citrus. Grass. Hops. Yeast. Grass. The taste follows suit. Spicy citrus hops and rye bitterness. Grassy, yeasty hoppy goodness. Labeled as a farmhouse ipa and it fits this description perfectly. The combination of hops and farmhouse flavors compliment nicely.

As usual, JK knocks it out of the park yet again. A very solid hybrid that is reasonably priced

Batch #8 from June 13, 2013 poured into JK snifter glass.

A: pours a murky opaque light orange. Big head which recedes into uneven patches of foam. Slightly overcarbonated.

S: the aroma is very recognizable for JK and it's farmhouses, funky, oak barrels, dry, cracker, milk, grapefruit, fresh.

T: long sharp bitterness strikes at the beggining and carries thru to the back of the palate, very similar to grapefruit in terms of acidity and dryness.

M: dry, tartic, acidic, envolving, chewy.

O: this is an IPA with a strongly marked flavor profile, it helds itself pretty well for a bottle 8 months old. Still showing it's true character and loving how it doesn't feel watered down. The time in the bottle feels like it allowed the beer to expand it's flavors and aromas gained thru the barrel aging process. Very strong on the nose, slightly less strong, but still with a pretty decent kick on the palate. And if you let enough time pass it will end giving your mouth a cool refreshed feeling!

An enjoyable brew from Jester King with good strong flavour

aroma: yeasty peach with wheat/cereal

taste: earthy, pine, grapes, spice, citrus. orange with white wine. Good malt backbone. Quite sweet with some back-end bitterness.

A big fan of the farmhouse/organic/local type philosophy behind the brewery. Quality beer.

Bottle from beastmaster shared after two gushing Black Damnations. This was the third gusher of the night but luckily not sour or gross. I guess the farmhouse yeast went a little crazy. November 4, 2013 dated bottle poured on Jan 25, 2014. Pours cloudy/hazy yellowish orange with a massive white head that goes on forever. Aroma of serious cat piss (in a good way), some lemon peel, some sharp bretty type aromas, and funky grass and hay. Flavor is light honey, lots of lemony citrus, a hint of spice (I assume from the rye but it is far back in the background), and a good bit of dry bretty finish. Light mouthfeel and medium plus carbonation, nice and airy and very drinkable. A nice changeup from the standard stuff out there. Solid brew.

Jester King's labels (and even their bottle caps) have awesome artwork and are very visually appealing, this one stood out among the various other bottles on the shelves when I bought it at Mr. B's in downtown Denver. I also enjoy that they put a lot of information about the beer right on the label- even finishing gravity, which is 1.000! Very cool, that's the brett at work.

A: slightly hazy, which is cool to see they did not clarify their beer and their is some slight yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle/glass. Very pale, can't be much specialty malt in this beer.

S: The funk hits you up front, with some feint hops and maybe a tinge of malt. Very fruity, musty, orange-ey brett character. The melding of the hops and the wild yeast is very nice.

T: Wow! really surprised at how much I like this. The funk melds perfectly with the fruit and hop character. It is dry on the palate, very refreshing, and delicious. It is sweet enough to not be completely bone dry and bitter, but balanced. The hops are toned down enough to let you experience the other flavors. I'm guessing that a fruity saison yeast was also used in the balance, as there are lots of peach, pear, and orange flavors coming from the yeast.

M: Very refreshing and light on the palate. The low finishing gravity and the hops really help with the refreshing character. It is light and spritzy, but not overly so. Well done.

O: I liked this more than I thought I would, enough that I would buy a few bottles to set aside for a while. The balance and complexity of all that is going on is impressive, this could have been a trainwreck given all of the factors. My first Jester king beer is a big success.

Pours gold with an orange hue and a huge whit head that sticks around and to the sides. A fantastic aroma with some funkiness, tropical fruits like pineapple and guava, a touch of orange, and a little spiciness from the rye. Flavor is dry with some breadiness, a little funkiness, tropical fruits, some rye, and a piney finish. Would have liked a touch less pineapple and a touch more rye, personally.A thinner, crisp mouthfeel. Overall, my intro to Jester King is a definite winner. Good stuff.

Usually I won't go for a large bottle of IPA. But this was Jester King and it had a cool label....

Glad I bought it. This a really nice beer. Pours light golden, almost straw color. A bit hazy. Nice big rocky white head, great lacing.

Aroma is hop forward, citrus and tropical. Hints of breadiness linger, but are overpowered.

Flavors come from the world of citrus and tropical hops, with a bit of earthiness sprinkled in. White pepper here and there. Not much rye from a rye IPA, but enough to notice if you think about it. The biscuit is subtle with subtle spice. Tropical hops flavor with the citrus hops bite. Really easy drinking. Great beer

A: Not much to its looks. Burnt orange and amber in color. A bit cloudy. Nominal head and lace.

S: Some phenols and funk. Not as hoppy on the nose as I'd expect from IPA.

T: Ample bitterness on the tongue. Starts at the sides then coats the whole palate. Some grapefruit rind and peppery notes come through. Never reveals much depth. Favors at start and finish remain consistent.

M: Tiny, dense bubbles. Overall feel is kinda clingy. Bitterness lingers extensively. Gets in the way of appreciating texture.

O: Bought this 750ml bottle and have to wonder for how long it might have sat on the store shelf or what kind of trip it may have had from TX to NorCal. Suspect that it may be past its prime or seen some hot days. Sorry to say that my experience was not good. All I got was bitterness and the wrong kind of funk.
