Batch #8 from June 13, 2013 poured into JK snifter glass.

A: pours a murky opaque light orange. Big head which recedes into uneven patches of foam. Slightly overcarbonated.

S: the aroma is very recognizable for JK and it's farmhouses, funky, oak barrels, dry, cracker, milk, grapefruit, fresh.

T: long sharp bitterness strikes at the beggining and carries thru to the back of the palate, very similar to grapefruit in terms of acidity and dryness.

M: dry, tartic, acidic, envolving, chewy.

O: this is an IPA with a strongly marked flavor profile, it helds itself pretty well for a bottle 8 months old. Still showing it's true character and loving how it doesn't feel watered down. The time in the bottle feels like it allowed the beer to expand it's flavors and aromas gained thru the barrel aging process. Very strong on the nose, slightly less strong, but still with a pretty decent kick on the palate. And if you let enough time pass it will end giving your mouth a cool refreshed feeling!

An enjoyable brew from Jester King with good strong flavour

aroma: yeasty peach with wheat/cereal

taste: earthy, pine, grapes, spice, citrus. orange with white wine. Good malt backbone. Quite sweet with some back-end bitterness.

A big fan of the farmhouse/organic/local type philosophy behind the brewery. Quality beer.

Bottle from beastmaster shared after two gushing Black Damnations. This was the third gusher of the night but luckily not sour or gross. I guess the farmhouse yeast went a little crazy. November 4, 2013 dated bottle poured on Jan 25, 2014. Pours cloudy/hazy yellowish orange with a massive white head that goes on forever. Aroma of serious cat piss (in a good way), some lemon peel, some sharp bretty type aromas, and funky grass and hay. Flavor is light honey, lots of lemony citrus, a hint of spice (I assume from the rye but it is far back in the background), and a good bit of dry bretty finish. Light mouthfeel and medium plus carbonation, nice and airy and very drinkable. A nice changeup from the standard stuff out there. Solid brew.

Jester King's labels (and even their bottle caps) have awesome artwork and are very visually appealing, this one stood out among the various other bottles on the shelves when I bought it at Mr. B's in downtown Denver. I also enjoy that they put a lot of information about the beer right on the label- even finishing gravity, which is 1.000! Very cool, that's the brett at work.

A: slightly hazy, which is cool to see they did not clarify their beer and their is some slight yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle/glass. Very pale, can't be much specialty malt in this beer.

S: The funk hits you up front, with some feint hops and maybe a tinge of malt. Very fruity, musty, orange-ey brett character. The melding of the hops and the wild yeast is very nice.

T: Wow! really surprised at how much I like this. The funk melds perfectly with the fruit and hop character. It is dry on the palate, very refreshing, and delicious. It is sweet enough to not be completely bone dry and bitter, but balanced. The hops are toned down enough to let you experience the other flavors. I'm guessing that a fruity saison yeast was also used in the balance, as there are lots of peach, pear, and orange flavors coming from the yeast.

M: Very refreshing and light on the palate. The low finishing gravity and the hops really help with the refreshing character. It is light and spritzy, but not overly so. Well done.

O: I liked this more than I thought I would, enough that I would buy a few bottles to set aside for a while. The balance and complexity of all that is going on is impressive, this could have been a trainwreck given all of the factors. My first Jester king beer is a big success.

Pours gold with an orange hue and a huge whit head that sticks around and to the sides. A fantastic aroma with some funkiness, tropical fruits like pineapple and guava, a touch of orange, and a little spiciness from the rye. Flavor is dry with some breadiness, a little funkiness, tropical fruits, some rye, and a piney finish. Would have liked a touch less pineapple and a touch more rye, personally.A thinner, crisp mouthfeel. Overall, my intro to Jester King is a definite winner. Good stuff.

Usually I won't go for a large bottle of IPA. But this was Jester King and it had a cool label....

Glad I bought it. This a really nice beer. Pours light golden, almost straw color. A bit hazy. Nice big rocky white head, great lacing.

Aroma is hop forward, citrus and tropical. Hints of breadiness linger, but are overpowered.

Flavors come from the world of citrus and tropical hops, with a bit of earthiness sprinkled in. White pepper here and there. Not much rye from a rye IPA, but enough to notice if you think about it. The biscuit is subtle with subtle spice. Tropical hops flavor with the citrus hops bite. Really easy drinking. Great beer

A: Not much to its looks. Burnt orange and amber in color. A bit cloudy. Nominal head and lace.

S: Some phenols and funk. Not as hoppy on the nose as I'd expect from IPA.

T: Ample bitterness on the tongue. Starts at the sides then coats the whole palate. Some grapefruit rind and peppery notes come through. Never reveals much depth. Favors at start and finish remain consistent.

M: Tiny, dense bubbles. Overall feel is kinda clingy. Bitterness lingers extensively. Gets in the way of appreciating texture.

O: Bought this 750ml bottle and have to wonder for how long it might have sat on the store shelf or what kind of trip it may have had from TX to NorCal. Suspect that it may be past its prime or seen some hot days. Sorry to say that my experience was not good. All I got was bitterness and the wrong kind of funk.

From my tasting notes: The Wytchmakerr poured a deep gold with a full white fluffy head while the aroma had citrus hops with a hint of pineapple and spice. The flavor is where the farmhouse yeast began to assert itself. The fruity citrus and piney hops mixed with the spicy rye flavors all rode a wave of slight barnyard and funk characteristics. There were so many dynamic flavors intertwined into a bold and balance brew. I know the farmhouse yeast flavors can be a love or hate relationship with some, but I loved it.

A - pours a deep murky amber brown. Huge foaming head. The off-white foam is thick and mouse-like while still having bubbly, fizzy parts. Takes a while to subside to drink. Leaves some thick lacing.

S - funky. Earthy. Herbal. At first the nose is doughy with an earthy with a funkiness i can only assume is partially from the rye grains. As it warms piney and citrusy american hops shine through. Sweet notes of blackstrap molasses and hints of resin round it out. 3.5

T - doughy malts with notes of cereal, sweet caramel, and forest floor. Classic american hop bitterness come through in the center with a touch more intensity closer to the backend. Citrus rind flavors blend with leafy and piny notes. More grainy (rye+black malt) notes on the backend. Finish is a lingering citric bitterness and pine.

M - medium bodied. Thick creamy texture. High carbonation with large prominent bubbles.

O - very interesting ale. I like how much it changes as it warms. Glad i finally got a chance to try some texas beer.

1 pint 9 fl oz brown glass bottle with cool label art and branded pressure cap acquired at my local HEB Grocery and served into a Spaten stange glass in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average given the brewery – which I’ve yet to be impressed with but which seems to be well regarded by locals. Batch #8 – June 14th, 2013. Reviewed live on 08/28/13. 7.3% ABV confirmed.

Served cold – straight from me fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a five finger wide head of white colour. Nice fluffy appearance and somewhat soft complexion. Pretty good thickness. Inconsistent uneven lacing coats the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Okay frothiness. Head retention is good for the ABV – ~5-6 minutes.

Body colour is a translucent, fairly transparent pale copper of below average vibrance. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Overall, it looks okay for the style, but it's not unique or special.

Sm: Has some nice rustic farmhouse spice – I get some clove, allspice, and of course spicy rye. It has a starchy, grainy, crackery malt base which lets the spices shine – but perhaps at the expense of the somewhat muted hop character. In terms of hops, I get floral and lightly fruity hop character. White peppery spicing characteristic of a saison is present and is a highlight for me. Definitely has more of a yeast presence than most IPAs – to its benefit; I enjoy the spicy biscuity yeast notes here, which remind the drinker not only that this is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and natural – but more importantly that it is alive. It’s phenol-heavy, which is interesting. Some pils malts, light munich malts, and even some biscuit malts are present, but surprisingly I’m not getting much in the way of your traditional pale malts. Rye dominates – in contrast to the usual subtlety with which rye is integrated.

No alcohol is detectable.

An intriguing, pleasant aroma of mild to moderate strength. By no means conventional or traditional; it’s more an experimental mix of the farmhouse ale and pale ale styles. I’m excited to try it, and the aroma is certainly inviting overall.

T: Spice – not hops – takes the forefront here. Allspice, spicy rye, white pepper, grinded peppercorn, coriander, clove.

The hop character is shockingly unevocative and restrained for the style, with only a generic floral hop character coming through. None of the piney character mentioned on the label is noticeable.

It’s definitely got an interesting foundation in terms of malts: heavy starchy and crackery malts, with some pils malt and biscuit malt coming through. Heavily phenolic. I get clean barley, even hints of straw. Quite grainy and grassy throughout.

Yeast does surface, yielding a biscuity spicy character but never quite attaining the complexity and subtlety you’d find in something like a saison. Brettanomyces do lend it a nice funky character which isn’t overdone.

Above average depth, intensity, and duration of flavour. It’s nicely balanced, but doesn’t bring enough complexity to the table. It does have some interesting subtlety, and its unique merging of three different styles (farmhouse ale, roggenbier, pale ale) is intriguing.

I find the white pepper to be the best aspect of this beer overall. I also love that it’s unfltered and unpasteurized, which allows that pleasant yeasty edge to manifest.

Mf: Good carbonation; this has certainly benefited from bottle-conditioning. Smooth and wet, with some crackly spice. Lightly crisp. It’s got a good smacky texture on the palate, which really complements the flavour profile well and even comes off custom-tailored to it. Good thickness and presence on the palate for the flavour profile and ABV. Nicely calibrated to support the taste. Good execution here. Good body.

Dr: Fans of traditional IPAs will scratch their heads, wondering where the hops are. I like this unique approach to the style, but while it’s an interesting experiment, it never quite comes off gestalt or cohesive, and is unfortunately unable to ultimately resolve the difficulties between merging a farmhouse ale, roggenbier, and IPA. The price point is also unreasonable considering the level of quality. I applaud the experimentation and innovation, and I’m glad I got to try this, but I wouldn’t recommend it to friends, nor would I get it again. Hides its ABV nicely and makes for a pleasant drinking experience. It’s certainly drinkable; I’ll have little trouble killing the bomber alone – in fact I look forward to it.

Ultimately, the biggest problem with this beer is that the spices and rye are overly dominant, taking away from the other notes in the flavour profile.

It grows on me as it warms; the rising temperature coaxes out more intricacy from the spices and rye. Serve chilled, not warm.

Probably drinks best from a goblet or tulip; my stange was fine but didn’t accentuate the character of the beer at all.

A: Large foamy head. Solid beer ring lacing.

S: Woody, pungent (from the rye I suppose), and pine.

T: Wood aged hops and rye bread.

M: Thick, syrupy, hop character.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is good. Nice head and lacing. Nose is hoppy and pungent with a nice wood aged effect. Woody hops and rye bread. Overall, this is really good quaff.

Pours amber with a large lasting head.
Nose shows floral and light fruity apple/pear notes along with saison yeast and doughy characters.
Very saison-like flavours. Dry with fruity notes and high mineral content. A fair whack of hops with a big grapefruity bitterness.

750 mL bottle poured into a tulip at cellar temperature.

L – Hazy pale amber color with a 3-finger bubbly, rocky, cream-colored head. Pretty nice retention and some patches of lacing.

S – Lots of piney and grapefruit hops with caramel malt and rye. There’s also some peppery yeast here, too. If you had told me this was a straight rye IPA and not a “farmhouse” rye IPA, I would’ve believed you – not much farmhouse character here.

T – Starts off sweet with caramel malt before spicy rye kicks in. Peppery yeast comes in next, followed quickly by a blast of bitter piney hops with a hint of grapefruit, too. This is one piney, spicy IPA.

F – Medium-bodied, decent carbonation, a sticky and chewy mouthfeel, and a bitter, spicy, and dry finish. Piney, spicy hop bitterness lingers for a while.

O – This is a very tasty rye IPA, but I’m not sure where the farmhouse character comes in. There’s maybe a hint of peppery yeast, but it kind of gets lost in all the hop spice and bitterness. It’s good and drinkable for sure, but I was expecting a bit more from Jester King on this one – perhaps a bit unfair since most of their offerings are stellar. It’s still a very good beer that I would recommend if you’ve got a thing for rye IPAs.

So is this what Texas tastes like? I’m wondering what specifically, if anything, the farmhouse yeast strain brings to the beer itself. To be honest I can’t speak to the differences—it’s been so long, and I’ve had this so many times without even realizing that they switched over to farmhouse yeast. (Plus my old review is really, really lame. Cut me some slack—I was just getting started.)

This pours a orange-straw color with great foaming. There’s a light rye spice to this with an orange-citrus hop profile. The flavor carries that peppery rye spice along with a floral orange blossom and a delicately sweet malt profile. I enjoyed this and don’t get a chance to have it that often anymore.

An explosive burst of off-white froth proceeds to pass the rim of the tulip and foams all over the counter before settling into a rock-like formation of sticky lace that never really dies.* Color is a golden, reddish-orange.

Herbal hops, orange peel, bubblegum and a big yeasty fruitiness to the nose. Tastes is big on apples and oranges all encircled by more herbal hops, spice and various faint sour fruits.

Medium bodied with a faint alcohol heat and extremely carbonated to say the least. Well-blended in all respects and quite a treat.

* The froth continues to ooze out of the bottle 15 minutes after opening.

Bottle served into Jester King goblet, for full justice.

Pours out a stereotypical Texas orange, completely opaque but vibrant. The head just won't quit. Leaves a serious creamy dollop from entry, with head barely receding less than a finger. Extreme foamy lacing, very attractive.

Smells a little funky, with notes of tropical fruit and green apple.

The taste is sharp, a slight nutty malt giving way to big peppery rye and fresh piney hops. I had the good fortune of trying a round of this beer before they moved to make it a farmhouse, and I can say that the natural yeast only benefitted this beer. The slightly wild taste underlines the hop and rye flavor, making it that much bolder.

A big bright beer, light and sudsy in the mouth and almost hiding its bite.

A staple of Jester King's lineup, this one's definitely worth a try.

Served chilled into a fluted tulip.

Pours a hazy copper color with 2+ inches of airy beige head even with a gentle pour. Head slowly fades leaving a heavy surface layer and heavy lacing.

Aromas of caramelized sugar, tropical fruit with a slightly musty background.

Tastes of caramelized sugars, peaches, mango and other tropical fruit with a mildly spicy and musty follow through.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and crisp finish. Very mild alcohol burn and lingering aftertaste.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this beer. I was surprised to see some of the low scores. To me, this is exactly what a rye IPA should taste like. Plus it's packaged in one of the coolest, creepiest bottles ever "her eyes are still following me around the room".

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had an amber color and a cloudy consistency. There was a two inch, foamy, long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A sweet, hoppy, slightly malty aroma. Nicely done.

T: Tasted of hops, a bit of pine, malt, a little citrus element, and the advertised rye. A slightly different type of for an IPA, but certainly sharp and tasty. The hops aren't overpowering and the rye is just present enough to make it interesting.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a super dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A well made, somewhat unusual IPA. Definitely drinkable.

Any beer enthusiast that is well-versed in Jester King would probably consider an IPA, of any extreme, to be rather elementary for the talent behind the Texas brewery. However, Stuffings and the crew throw a farmhouse-inspired Rye IPA into their catalog and the results are nothing short of avant-garde. It pours a frothy and plentiful white head that remains steadfast and dense, leaving heavy, heavy lace atop a murky body. The aroma is a balance of hoppy, citrus aroma balancing floral and pine scents, and leaving the enthusiasts with phenols on the undertone. As far as taste goes, expect a balanced and moderate hop profile with a tightly-wound bitter and dry finish. The body, a medial mass is filled with carbonation, yet never problematic.

It's interesting, it's complex, and it's living up to the so-called standard we all expect from Stuffings.

appearance - pours a deep orange, large head, nice lace.

smell - piney hops, earthy citrus, fruity.

taste - starts out as an ipa and finishes as a saison.

mouthfeel - smooth...a bit light for me.

overall - only JK beer i brought back from texas. i like what they did with it, and really enjoy and respect the style. with that being said, I enjoy some other beers of this style a bit better.

A-Pours a dark and dirty golden color, cloudy. A Massive fluffy off-white colored head that tapers to a very thick film, lace drapery.

S-Piney hops and spicy aromas, lemmony and floral farmhouse notes as it warms.

T- Spicy IPA and fruity saison blend of tastes.

M- Full body with an ultra-smooth finish. Semi-dry and yeasty.

O-I cannot easily detect malted rye, but I know that it's in there. It's more yeasty to me. Nice blend, drinkable.

Cloudy golden, with a plus-size head of off-white carbonation. Lovely lace.

Nose is oddly tangy -- the rye adds a sharp, spicy aroma. Actually, I get this more than a hoppy scent. Not a bad thing.

Taste is a weird mix of spicy malts and citrus hoppiness. Actually, this drinks very smooth, with a sharp and almost sour finish. A definite unique flavor profile for a rye pale ale, and a very tasty, enjoyable brew. Very nice.

750 ml bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: Orange and yellow cloudy beer with a small head. The head doesnt dissipate.
S: A mix of IPA and saison, some minor hop and pine notes combine with an earthy lemon flavor, very cool.
T: A minor hoppy beer on the front blends into an saison on the end. Some hop notes but not too many ending with a perfect saison. Very few if any malt notes.
M: A lot more hops, perfectly balanced and some minor lemon notes on the end.
O: Really good and interesting. I think this is the most interesting beer Ive had this year and Im very excited to try other JK beers.

A: The beer pours a dark clear golden body with a thick creamy light tan head that slowly fades away and leaves a lot of lacing on the glass.

S: I am picking up a strong amount of spicy and floral hops, some grain and a strong amount of rye.

T: This is a really strange flavor IPA. I get a nice amount of hops and it tastes really good at first, but the farmhouse yeast starts to come in and really changes the flavor. The flavor goes from sweet to just a weird funk that I cant really describe. The rye flavor is there too and I just dont really know what to think about the flavor of this beer.

M: The beer is super easy to drink and has a good amount of carbonation. There is a strong amount of crispness on the back of the throat.

O: This is just one of those weird beers I cant really get my mind around. BUT that is how Jester King does things. They are not afraid to try anything and I give them mad respect for that... On the other hand, I think they took a major step back on this IPA because the original recipe was much better.
