Bottled 2013. From bottle to goblet.

Pours deep dark black and compliments the screech owls in the background of my porch. Medium brown head that retains well and leaves subtle lacing.

Smells like a good Imperial stout brewed in a barn in all the right ways. Dark malts with hints of sour and funk.

Tastes like a good Stout at first then blast beats into a crazy farmhouse/saison with sourness and funk carried by the Black malt in all it's roasted complexity. Notes of coffee, chocolate and dark fruit with hints of hay then other strange flavor combinations.

Feels like the best of both styles. With a juicy thick body and a slight lingering astringency.

Overall I only thought this brew was okay when I had it young, 3 to 5 months old, but maturation in the cellar has made a world of difference! 2 styles that I love brought together in a beautifully dark, well balanced, union. Would like to see other brewery's attempted this style!

Large shared bottle.
There's a lot going on in this big beer. The sweet coffee, dark bread, and chocolate aroma leads to a very different and even more complex flavor. Moderately tart and, I think, even more bitter. I did much prefer the aroma to the flavor.

An interesting take on the sour stout. Quite funky, with a barnyard flavour, mixed with roasted malt and chocolate. The funk is a weird blend with the stout. Good but not for large quantities.

Batch #16 bottled on 3/26/2015. Poured into a JK tulip glass. Classic imperial stout pour, pitch black with a brown head that continually laced the glass. That's about it for the classic imperial stout. Initial smell is roast but quickly dissipates and the tart smell takes over. Initial taste is tart cherries then continues with roast, chocolate and some coffee with the tart cherries taking over at the end. Very dry. Gets much better as it warms. Interesting take on an imperial stout.

L: dark brown ... it's hard to tell for sure because the dark here runs from brown to black quickly as the depth of the brew increases in the glass, but it's clear ... might be the most clear beer of Jester King's lineup I've tried so far; some cool lacing; foam is tan, beautiful complement ... almost brown foam

S: pure milk chocolate to begin with ... holy cow! it's super sweet, shocking from a JK brew but they really loaded up with malt for a traditional stout. as it warms, starts to show the signature JK tartness ... very backwards but still very cool. as the sour and sweet notes mix, it takes on a chocolate cheesecake aroma. absolutely fantastic!

T: sour espresso/chocolate ... what a mix! super sweet underneath the farmhouse tart notes of lemon ... the stout-like chocolate and coffee really take over in the second half of the swallow. not as sweet as the nose but still full of balancing flavors.

F: much more farmhouse ale-like than stout-like, and I love it. very crisp and light and easy to drink.

O: if ever there was a "summer" stout, this is it. it truly blends the best of both the imperial stout and the farmhouse ale, leaving you with a balanced sweet/sour mix of notes that make for a delightful experience. for the beer drinker looking to get into sours, this might be a good starting point because the dark malt here really kicks in a lot of sweetness. i will drink this every chance I get, it's that good.

Deep brown, almost black in some light. Barely there khaki head. Dark roasted, almost burnt smelling, malt, coffee, mild musty yeast. Up front the flavor is of the roasty imperial stout base, but the acidity and fungal yeasty funk immediately flood the tongue. Finish has a solid bitterness and overtones of coffee. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light and lively for being so high abv. Overall pretty awesome.

Big bottle into a snifter. Pours dark brown and settles black in the glass. The first pour from the bottle yielded a 2.5 finger head of tan, crunchy foam. Interesting aroma - definite notes of yeast and sourness like a wild ale. This smell is quite evenly balanced with underlying notes of chocolate, roasted malt, and a slight hint of alcohol. Medium weight with a surprisingly carbonated mouthfeel. This beer feels incredibly lively on the palate, much like a wild ale. Tart cherries and sour notes up front with undertones of roasiness. This one stays pretty tart all the way through, and finishes crisp. On the back end, you start seeing those notes of charred wood, chocolate, and coffee. The aftertaste is a pleasant blend of sourness and choclate.

I've been wanting to crack this beer for a while now, and I couldn't wait any longer. I had high expectations for this beer, and for the most part it didn't disappoint. Luckily I am a fan of wild ales as well as imperial stouts, because while this beer is called a "russian imperial stout", it's not. It's a sour that has roasty/choclatey undertones. Aside from labels, though, it's an excellent beer. Very well-balanced, and surpringinly easy to drink. I can't believe this beer is north of 9% abv, honestly. You can't taste a bit of booziness.

Overall, a bit off-center, but I imagine that's what they were going for. Damn good blending of two styles that I never would've thought would mesh.

(Batch #16 - bottled March 25th 2015)This was an interesting beer, not bad at all but tastes nothing like it smells. It was very nice on the nose, a blend of coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malts. Didn't expect it to be so tart/sour in the taste. I felt like between the sourness and the stout-like characteristics the flavors clashed a little bit. Again, it was not unpleasant by any means, just a bit... odd.

750 ml bottle poured into brandy snifter. A sweet passion fruit smell with some grassy spiciness and a mild cheesy aroma start this one off, but a little longer reveals quite a bit of complexity occurring in this. Some other subtle notes that poke through are raisin, cereal, mild milk chocolate, woody/piney, and a bit of alcohol every now and again. A brown espresso-like head starts out very abundant, but recedes to a light layer atop a dark, brown-red beer that’s not quite opaque, but close. Small bubble cascade down the side of the glass rather than lace. Initial, generous, tart cherry and melon sweetness tastes comes through with some piney spice. The pine spice turns somewhat bitter and is then accompanied by moderate bitter roasted coffee and chocolate flavors. There’s a also a very mellow sour dairy (spoiled milk) taste of the yeast in the background. The last taste as the drink is swallowed is a cola-like sweetness. There’s an above-average level of carbonation for an Imperial Stout (although nothing overwhelming) but it keeps the beer relatively thin (again for an Imp Stout). The mouth is coated with a combination of a smokey/ashy chocolate/coffee bittering, along with some pine spice, which disappears fairly early, and a very soft, mild brie-esque flavor replaces it. The cheese flavor, when it appears, matches the smokey chocolate mouth coating stride-for-stride for awhile - probably pairs really nicely with mild soft cheese - before a milky, creamy coating begins to wash and mellow out the smokiness. Unique complexity with nothing that’s over-powering or overwhelming.

A: Dark brown with a tan one and a half finger head that lasts and lasts. Very thick lacing. And I love the artwork.

S: Semi-sweet chocolate, anise, leather, malts. Heaven.

T: Like drinking from a chocolate fountain. Sweet, smooth, decadent. I really didn't pick up on the farmhouse aspect or fruity esters. This one was full throttle chocolate stout. Elegant and rich.

M: Medium with medium carbonation. Frothy as hell. Everything you wish for in a mouthfeel.

O: One of the best beers I've had this year. A true delight. My first Jester King. I'd kill for another one of these heavy metal taste sensations.

Had this on tap at the brewery side-by-side with Funk Metal and I surprisingly gave this the nod. It has a nice balance between stout roastiness and the tart flavors. Whereas, Funk Metal was dominated by tart flavors that overshadowed a lot of the roastiness. Nice beer, I'm not convinced this stout is better with the farmhouse yeast, but it is certainly more interesting.

Jet black with two fingers of mocha coloured head, some lace. Smell is of roast with a big black liquorice, chocolate and coffee with a sour cherry underneath, similar to a black forest cake in ways, a very light funk as well once this warms. Taste is of sour cherries and chocolate, cake like, liquorice, mid palate roasted flavours with some coffee, a bit of smoke and char into the finish. Lightly carbonated with a full chewy body. Overall this was quite solid, was expecting this to not be as good as it was for whatever reason, the saison yeast added a different element that seemed to work well on this occasion.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a Jester King stemmed glass.

Pours a deep, deep black, inky body with a huge, gushing dark mocha colored head that reduces fairly quickly to a thin layer of foam, leaves a little lacing. Beautiful.

Smell is interesting.. almost smells sour with hints of coffee, milk chocolate, and toffee. Not overly aromatic, tough to get a good analysis here.

Upfront is heavy freshly ground coffee, roasty malt. The follow through is bittersweet chocolate and maybe some farmhouse belgian spiciniess. The finish is hoppy, roasty, and toasted and charred.

Mouthfeel is medium with medium high carbonation. Not super rich, but super tasty.

I liked Black Metal a lot.. my only complaint would be that I don't get much "farmhouse" character.. maybe a little more spiciness, fruityness, or tartness would have helped. Overall recommendable.

El Martillo del Muerte

A: Pours an inky black with some espresso tones and a lively head of dark mocha. Has some large format bubbles that seem to gasp and collapse when introduced to the atmosphere. Some light sticky dotted window dressing left behind.

S: Thick roast malt nose comprised of chocolate syrup, dark fruits, molasses/brown sugar, licorice, and a touch of soy umami noted. Faint tobacco and earthy spices come together in the background. Lasted by a mild dusting of Belgian yeast esters in the form of dried banana peel. Smells quite dark on the roast and fairly light on the Belgian character.

T: Dark chocolate and charred marshmallow with molasses, dark fruits, earthy spice, and dried banana. Incredibly light and frothy with a nice dry finish and a lower amount of bitterness to the beer. Some alcohol making a cameo appearance towards the finish. Getting a slight metallic tinge to this and perhaps this was aged longer than I had suspected. This is Black Metal however. Forged from iron, sweat, and little orphan tears.

M: Moderately filling to heavy I would say. I mean it should be but there is an upper amount of carbonation to this keeping it frothy and light on the tongue. The yeast plays some role in this I am sure of it. Smooth and creamy overall with a nice drying finish.

D: Black Metal is dark and brooding on the outside but rather tamed and light hearted on the inside. What with its light fluffy feels and what not. Really this is a nice brew and in good balance. A little light on the Farmhouse but still quite enjoyable. Would have again but not probably something I would go out of my way for.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black stout with a large light brown foamy head with great retention and some good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with some chocolate notes is very enticing. Taste is a well balanced mix between some roasted malt with some notes of chocolates and some light fruity notes. Body has a full boy with a nice creamy mouthfeel with no apparent alcohol. Well balanced with super good drinkability and smooth aftertaste which may be due to farmhouse yeast makes for a great late-night stout.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled in 3/2013. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger fairly dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, smoke, light char, pepper, raisin, fig, light licorice, and roast/yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of big dark/roasted malt and moderate fruity/spicy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, smoke, light char, pepper, raisin, fig, light licorice, and roast/yeast earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness and earthy yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roast, toast, dark bread, smoke, light char, pepper, raisin, fig, and roast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity of big dark/roasted malt and light-moderate yeast ester flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian imperial stout. All around great complexity and robustness of big dark/roasted malt and moderate fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

A: poured into a snifter to a deep black with a two finger dense tan head that is slow to fade and leaves decent lacing
S: smells of sweet chocolate, coffee, and toasted marshmallows
T: taste is bittersweet chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and kind of peppery and spicy yeast. swallow is more coffee and chocolate with some charred wood. hints of oxidation but not terrible
M: this beer is surprisingly light on the palate due to some pretty prickly carb. the finish is
O: It looks like they didn't use an oxygen fixing cap but the beer is pretty solid. a bit too heavy on the carbonation but the flavors are there. the farmhouse yeast does some interesting things but it doesn't overshadow the rest of the beer.

Bottle purchased at World of Beer in Tioga. Pours pitch black and thick with a massive dark brown head into my tulip glass. Aromas of roasty dark malts, some chocolate, light hops, but an interesting light grass introduced to the smell that I assume is the farmhouse yeast influence. I must say, though, that this influence is extremely subdued. Flavor follows the smell nearly perfectly with sweet chocolate balanced by slightly bitter roast flavor and a hint of anise. The farmhouse claim doesn't come through to much in he flavor but maybe makes things more drinkable. Mouthfeel is thick and rich but not overbearing with plenty if carbonation to make this full bodied and silky on the tongue. A really nice beer to be honest. Would have again for sure.

750 ml bottle, Batch #15, bottled August 26, 2013. Served in a Great Lakes Brewing chalice, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch and a half brown head. Head retention is good, and there's a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like roasted malt, coffee, milk and bittersweet chocolate, and some sweet and tart dark fruit. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some burnt malt/grain, licorice, and a bit of peppery spice and earthiness. I like the mix of roastiness, sweetness and tartness in this brew. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and coating with a good amount of soft carbonation. I thought this was a good brew, I'd like to pick up a bottle the next time I come across some. $13.99 a bottle.

Bottle is a couple of years old. Perfect appearance: dark black, full & frothy brown billowy head. Nose is very roasty with some sourness. Taste is quite roasty up front (nice!), a bit tangy on the sides, some sweetness and bitterness in the back and roasty throughout. Bitterness in the finish too. Reminiscent of black coffee. It isn't particularly yeasty for a "farmhouse" but I haven't had regular Black Metal to compare. Mouthfeel is medium-full. Overall a very nice roasty stout.

PS: Bottlecap liner had a rough texture with an odor, a couple of plastic flecks resting on top of the beer

JulioH and the Jester King general statement hit the proverbial nail on the head. Near perfect color. There's a coffee, and slight metallic aroma. Strong roasted coffee flavor, with the slightest hint of tart stout that lingers. There's a definite dry, bitter chocolate after taste. Really well done. I would like to see what age does to this.

Beautiful color, dark brown/black, awesome foamy head with a very dark mocha color. Not very aromatic, but clear hints of coffee. After tasting it, a strong coffee flavor is uncovered. Not heady at all, nor boozy. Hints of sour beer linger, maybe cherries or lambic.

This is a very complex beer. It is not heavy to drink, it's one of the less filling Russian Stouts I've had. Dry and bitter remains in your mouth.

I totally dug this beer. Pours totally black with tan, khaki head. The nose is dark malts, coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, dark fruits - figs and cherries - picked up on some of those farmhouse-y saison yeast notes. The taste follows the noise primarily with the dark roasted grains, cocoa and dark fruits - maybe a little vinous. Some sweetness that is almost like Belgian candi-sugars, a little more oak and slight funk from what I am assuming is the farmhouse yeast - though they are really quite minimal. Surprisingly smooth and full mouthfeel that has an incredibly dry finish. Again, I really enjoyed this beer. One my favorites from Jester King that I thought walked the line between the two styles quite well.

A: Pours an opaque black with a thick, creamy tan head.

S: Pleasant aromas of caramel, coffee, roasted grain, vanilla bean, dark chocolate, minerals, raisins, plums, and black cherries are underscored by a subtle, oaky, lactic funk.

T: Notes of oak, cedar, plums, black cherry, black currant, rum raisins, figs, roasted grain, coffee, vanilla bean, caramel, dark chocolate, and minerals fill the mouth. Lactic character from the yeast is very subtle. The finish is dry and intense with oak, roasted grain, chocolate, dark fruit, and mellow alcohol.

M; Relatively full-bodied, dry, and chalky. Carbonation is crisp and intense. Alcohol presence is mellow and restrained. This is very easy to drink compared to many other examples of the style.

O: A really interesting imperial stout. The funky notes are minimal, but work in the context of this beer. Before trying this, I had heard a number of horror stories about the consistency of Jester King's output, with this beer often singled out as one of the most hit or miss. Either those stories are exaggerated or I happened to get a good bottle because, fortunately, this turned out to be a very nice ale. I would definitely try this one again.
