Notes/Commercial Description:
A hop forward beer with dank, resinous hop flavor and aroma, balanced by lightly kilned malt flavors, farmhouse yeast esters and a bit of warming alcohol. Thrash Metal Farmhouse Strong Ale is an homage to thrash metal music, which often fuels us during our daily chores at Jester King.

Got in a trade with Cyde. 750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours very hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big pear, apple, grape, lemon zest, clove, pepper, floral, grass, light pine, hay, light funk, leather, and spicy yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and yeast ester notes, with a fair amount of malt balance; and good strength. Taste of lemon zest, pear, apple, grape, clove, pepper, bread, wheat, light honey, floral, grass, hay, leather, light funk, and earthy yeast spiciness. Light earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, light fruits, pepper, clove, floral, grass, hay, wheat, bread, light funk, and earthy yeast spiciness on the finish for a while. Nice balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast flavors with moderate hop and malt notes; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick, fairly crisp, and earthy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good saison style. Good balance and complexity of malt, hop, and fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Dull grassy taste that's close to a blonde ale.
Slight flavor from the malt, low hops. I wouldn't classify this as a"spicy" saison.
Probably best enjoyed at a warmer than colder temperature.
Overall, not an exciting entry in the Jester King portfolio

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter, no bottle date. This pours a hazy golden brown color with a large off white head which has good retention and leaves a lacing. The smells are of a little funk, pepper, lemon grass. The feel is medium high carbonination. The taste is slightly bitter, some nice hops, a little alcohol head, a little funk, a very dry finish.

a beautiful golden / light copper pour with 2 fingers of head which stayed quite foamy throughout the session. smells of pepper, lemongrass, spicy yeast, banana, strawberry.. lots of nice scents, slightly funky. lots of sweet malt are present, alongside of a spicy booze heavy citrusy drink. lots of yeast, pepper, coriander, slight orange peel flavor..
medium body, nicely carbonated, a bit on the heavy/hot side.. which is AWESOME especially for the freezing cold night we're having. a wonderful saison, on the heavy side, so it's a bit abrasive, however it's a great sipper. very flavorful, with a slight dry finish.

Fresh American style farmhouse yeast aroma. Enormous bubbly white head on hazy yellow. Smooth drinking and very drinkable farmhouse, with enough hops to keep it on the bitter side and interesting. Some spice in the finish, though I have had spicier bites in this style.

Appearance: Like all of the Jester King beers, this one is a great looker, with the clear amber liquid capped by a massive head that leaves copious amounts of lace behind

Smell: A combination of the spicy yeast esters and piney hops

Taste: The hops are there from the outset, with a resinous, rotting pineapple character that is joined by the spicy yeast character that becomes quite peppery, in the middle; after the swallow, the spice and resins build to a crescendo that tingles the tongue

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with prickly carbonation; a hint of warmth in the gullet

Overall: Like Unibroue, many of the Jester King beers coverge in the mind due to the yeast they are using but this brewery still manages to create some very interesting brews; this is a very nice one with some powerful flavors

A: Orange/copper with very vigorous white head that dissipates quickly but leaves a lot of lacing
S: Sour and funky, citrusy, very faintly hoppy
T: Very slightly sour on the forefront – not as much as the nose would make you expect – nicely spicy, very light on the malt flavors and the bitterness; not sweet but not bitter, very well balanced
M: Tingly, smooth
D: Very drinkable, and would be very nice on a hot day.

Thanks to dirtygrind (Reddit) for this interesting beer, excited for it. Share with rudzud cause he can be a cool guy when he puts his mind to it.

Nice looking fluffy head hits 1/2 finger but looks bubbly and nice, great lacing, pale grapefruit tangerines hazy colored.

Nose very nice, lots of earthy farmhouse saison aromas, light earthy floral spices, nice hops with a grassy undertone, light citrus, like, very earthy leaf like, little tangertine and grapefruit, great farmhouse grassy hay wheat like light funky aroma.

Taste earthy, very nice Belgian flavors, saison, farmhouse, grassy wheat and hay like, little grainy, nice floral spices, light citrus, light fruity esters pear like, little farmhouse funk, light bitterness great grassy earthy hops, little pine, some grapefruit and tangerine like hops, hay grassy flavors, light Belgian golden malts, some esters, little booze. Finish is dry light bitterness, lots of grassy hops, light fruity citrus and grapefruit, earthy farmhouse funk, light floral spices all lingering.

Mouth is med bodied, nice carb.

Overall great, nice Belgian malts and yeast esters, great floral spices, light but good farmhouse funk, saison flavors, nice grassy light grapefruit hops, and very drinkable. Another big winner from jester king.

Thanks to JLindros for sharing this bottle.

A - Poured into a standard Kate the Great tulip a hazy golden straw hue with a thin light blanket. Light lacing.

S - Aromas of light farmhouse funk ans fruity esters just very inviting .

T - Taste is quite different and unique. Light farmhouse with gentle hay and citrus. Good esters with a light boozy.

M - Mouthfeel is pretty good, in line with other jester king beers.

O - Overall I enjoyed this unique beer from jester king. Glad I got to try it

341st review. I can see the seeswo. I've got him in my sights.

Thanks to bentwookie for this and the rest of the complete Jester King collection. Tulip glass.

A: Pours orange-tinted golden, three fingers of pillowy white head. Very good retention and a few streaks of lace.

S: Dried sugar-coated pineapple, floral, sweet malt. Smells really nice.

T: strong floral notes (jasmine, hibiscus). Doesn't quite come together, and there's a lingering, slightly off bitterness/alcohol on the backend.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation which imparts a nice crispness. Round and slightly alcoholic body.

O: Pretty good. I think I missed the boat on the "piney, citrusy hops" per the label, but fortunately what's underneath is still tasty.

Another offering from Jester King Craft Brewery that I decided to try, a 750mL bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A - Thrash Metal Farmhouse Strong Ale has a cloudy darker blood orange color to it. It also poured more of an off-white/cream colored head, but not much, only about 1/2 inch.

S - On the nose I get some grassy notes, citrus, and a barnyard funk type of smell, most likely due to the yeast.

T - On the palate I got a little bit of spice first, followed by plenty of citrus (lemon and orange), not over powering though. This beer finishes with interesting zest of citrus and, grassy flavors. Also interesting of note is the amount of Belgian style malt that comes through.

M - Medium-bodied on the palate, even a bit light due to the higher than expected amount of carbonation I feel. Which surprised me since I didn't get much head on the pour.

O - Another fantastic job by Jester King, Thrash Metal is well done. The beer is well balanced, and I didn't feel that any one flavor was specifically over powering. It has an interesting complexity that you just have to experience for yourself. I have one more bottle I'm going to let age for a little while and see how this beer changes.

A - Pours cloudy orange with bright bubbles all around.

S - Citrus and grass comes to the forefront. Good farmhouse elements along with white grapes.

T - Malty and light caramel, develops into orange peel with a hoppy finish.

M - Kind of heavy on the tongue but the carbonation is very lively.

O - Love it... Reminds me of a heavier farmhouse ale.

My third or fourth from Jester King. These guys really know what they're doing. From an electrical tape wrapped 750mL bottle into my Darkness snifter. No bottle date.

Pours a hazy light gold. Relatively gentle pour produced a huge, billowy, three finger head. Eggshell white. Very nice retention and some, spotty, sticky lacing.

Tons of spicy and floral esters. Some lemon zest. Classic Jester King farmhouse funk. Some clean alcohol.

Follows the nose in regards to the esters; very spicy. More Belgian malts come through in the middle, and a more prominent funk. Almost Brett-y and a little tart. Still some citrus and grassy hops, moderate bitterness. Warming alcohol in the finish with some more of that tasty farmhouse funk.

Solidly medium in body lightened by the copious carbonation. Very smooth and almost creamy. Hop resins coat the mouth. Whiff of alcohol evaporates off the tongue.

Overall this is another unique and tasty offering from Jester King. Their farmhouse yeast takes center stage with a well done hop profile taking a supporting role. Maybe the best domestic "Belgian" Strong Pale I've had. If you have access to Jester King you are lucky. These guys are going places. Cheers!

Pours a hazy orange with plenty of yellowing around the edges of my tulip glass. This thing is effervescent as all hell. Tons of carbonation is visible and a monstrous white fluffy head is produced.

There is a farmhouse yeast funky quality with the hops are right underneath it producing orange and grassy aromas.

Big funky and citrus(orange and lemon) elements on the palette. Mmmm, musty oranges. Slight bitterness and alcohol presence. You do get some malty sweetness.

Medium bodied mouthfeel. There is a lively carbonation. Quite crisp and could make for a good summer type beer. Who cares if its 100 degrees and 9.3 abv.

Zesty popped in my head while drinking this. I realized I have no thrash metal to listen to while imbibing. I was all good when putting back some Black Metal. I liked this beer but just like thrash metal in general I'm not overly impressed.

Poured into a brandy snifter. Pours hazy orange with some sediment and an off-white, fluffy head and plenty of bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. There is some lacing left on the side of the glass. The aroma is strongly of Farmhouse esters. There are some white wine characteristics to the aroma as well. I can also detect some hops and the malt. The taste really hits those Saison notes. There is that barnyard funk with spice and citrus. Those white wine notes are noticeable as well. There are some pine and grassy characteristics coming through from the hops as well. The hops really come through in the back end bringing a nice bitterness to the beer. There's a nice malty backbone that is grainy and sweet. It's nicely well balanced. The alcohol is present in the taste, but it is not overpowering. The body is light with abundant carbonation. The finish is slightly dry and the carbonation lends crispness. The lighter body makes what this strong ale easy to consume. This really is an excellent beer.

Jester King
Thrash Metal
750ml, Winter 2012
Deschutes tulip

A: Huge hiss upon opening.  Hazy light orange color.  Three fingers of slightly off white fluffy, rocky head.  Tons of carbonation, tiny bubbles streaming off the bottom of the glass.  Tons!  Seems like there will be some lacing here, but the head is hiding it. *** I had a bottle stopper in the bottle, and due to the crazy carb it popped out on the table.

S: I get those Euro, East Kent Goldings, hops.  Light, citrusy and grassy.  Also, getting those farmhouse like esters.  Maybe some light white grape notes.  Sort of vinous.

T: Tips of the tongue, I get those nice crisp citrus like hop varieties.  It's a very pronounced flavor profile.  I the middle of the mouth you get some of the traditional Saison notes: spicy peppery notes, light barnyard funk, etc.  It's not as good as others in the style.  Maybe a touch too boozy, but the carbonation helps to clear the palate and hide that a little bit.  This is a good thing.

M: Medium bodied.  Lots of prickly carbonation.  Helps clear the palate and thin it.

O: Jester King has better offerings, that is for sure.

O - Unique beer here. Bret and some funky citrus, a touch of hoppy resin as well.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a clear copper color with a two fingers of loose off white bubbly head that quickly receded to a collar of bubbles. Plenty of carbonation streaming up from the bottom of the glass.

Nose is malty, toasted grain and caramel, a little grassy note. A red apple fruity ester note as it warms.

Taking a sip, malty upfront, caramel, toasted grain, fruity ester, apple and a light clove flavor. Finishes cleanly.

Medium body with plenty of soft carbonation that gently hits the tongue.

Beer pours a hazy ruddy orange with a pillowy off white head that leaves nice web lacing.

Nose is spicy with some astringent hops. I get some orange and citrus with some dry grass.

Taste big, citrusy with a pronounced spiciness. Lemon and lime rinds appear on the finish. Some candy sugar on the mid palate that lingers through as toffee on the finish. The spiciness and the sweetness complement each other beautifully. There's also a very nice floral component on the mid palate.

Mouthfeel is tingly and slick with a nice medium full body.

Overall this is a fantastic belgian strong. Delicious, would love to have it all the time but won't b/c of the price point.

The beer pours a light golden yellow with no head. The nose is outstanding with big notes of yeast, citrus fruit, and sugary sweetness. The taste doesn't translate with an overly hoppy, slightly gross aftertaste. I honestly don't like the intense hoppiness of this beer, it doesn't stay as clean as its nose. Overal I probably won't try this beer again, not my style.

My new favorite beer, and one that is absolutely perfect in every respect. Wonderful turbid appearance, beautiful color, and perfect head formation/retention/lacing. Great earthy and spicy aroma from the house yeast and the liberal use of hops. Taste is out of this world, with a yeast forward spiciness and a nice balance of hops. The wheat addition is also a very nice touch, as it comes through very subtly while adding a thickness to the pleasantly mid-to-full bodied mouthfeel. I really cannot stress how much I love this beer, and it definitely turned me on to Jester King, whose other offerings (Petite Prince was too watery, Wytchmaker was infected and oxidized, Noble King didn't stand out) were nothing too special. Well done, and cheers!

Pours a murky honey orange with a 1 inch foamy orange-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks and dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, spices, yeast, and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is of citrus zest and alcohol up front with malty finish. There is a mild level of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but there is something in the taste that I can't put my finger on that is a bit odd.

A - Pours a very hazy golden-orange color with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of strong banana and orange, with some pepper, clove, other spices, farmhouse yeast esters, citrus hops, sweet malt, and a hint of booze.

T - Starts off with some citrus and banana flavor with some orange peel, lemon, and tangerine, with a bit of peppery spice in the background. Through the middle, more yeast character comes through with some clove alongside some sweet malts and a touch of pine hop and bitterness. Finish is a mix of banana, clove, farmhouse yeast esters, citrus flavors, and a hint of booze.

M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, warming, and lightly sweet finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice balance of flavors with some strong citrus notes and malt flavors. The yeast flavor is also solid here.

Thanks to XicanoBeerRun for sharing this beast! I thought this would be a version of their Black Metal imperial stout so imagine my surprise when it poured a cloudy straw color with lots of foam atop! It has a yeasty estery aroma and is flavor-forward with a little sour, some tartness and a lemony note that opens as it warms. Is this a sour saison? Zesty, vibrant, big and not to be messed with!
