Notes/Commercial Description:
“Provision Ale” is a rough translation of the French term “bière de provision“, which was sometimes used to describe special beers that were suitable for extended storage and aging. Brewed from relatively simple, straightforward ingredients, Mad Meg is golden colored and quite strong, at over 9% ABV. Its palate intertwines delicate farmhouse esters with earthy, spicy hops and clean malt flavors. The name “Mad Meg”, refers to a peasant woman from Flemish folklore, also known as “Dulle Griet” or “Dull Gret”, who leads an army of women to pillage hell. She’s famously depicted in Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1562 painting by the same name.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Deep haze in a golden glass with an amber core. Holds a bright white head high in the glass, a solid finger that leaves sticky persistent lace.

Smell: Lemongrass, over ripe peach, Belgian yeast and fruity esters. Heady alcohol edge, lemon peel bitter.

Taste: Just a touch funky. Hints of sour go a bit lemon juice with a leafy hop bitter that comes across as very German. It's a nice representative of the style, has the Trippel alcohol and hops, but comes out a bit sweeter and refreshing.

Mouthfeel: First hit was a bit soapy foam, but it settled down nicely and lets the bitter oil slowly soak after each sip.

Overall: Points for tasting like something made in a Belgian Farmhouse. They were generous with the Saaz hops giving a lot of punchy bitter, generous with the Pilsner malt giving a gritty, bready malt, and just funky enough with the yeast to give a ester perfume. I don't do sour beers, so I don't think I'd enjoy this after some cellaring, but will probably get another fresh.
Think this is my favorite Jester King so far.

750 mL bottle poured into a tulip

A- A slightly hazy golden orange color with a four finger fluffy white head.

S- Wheat, tart lemons, faint funk, some earthy hops, some sweet malts.

T- Tart lemons, funk, wheat, some sweet malts, peppercorns, earth hops, some grass.

M- Fairly smooth, dry, medium body.

O- An interesting beer that I find enjoyable. Not sure if I would pick this up again, but it has me excited to try other beers from Jester King.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a jester king tulip glass. Purchased in north providence ri.

A- pours a very hazy orange body with a fluffy white head that reduces slowly and leaves thick lacing.

S- lots of fruity esters.. Banana, apple, citrus rind. Barnyard funk, Belgian spices, faint tartness.

T- starts off with an odd combination of subdued hops and banana and cloves, this gives way to spices and citrus. Odd

M- medium body and carbonation

Overall decent.. At best. Wanted more funk and tartness, I expect more from jester king.

Large bottle purchased at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY.Batch #10- Oct 16, 2013

Pours heavily clouded light tangerine, gauzy of white head, slowly goes to a thicker film and leaves lovely looking scattered fields of sheeting and lace. Nice looking brew.

Pepper and tropical fruit on the nose.

Super flavorful and complex saison. Pepper, fruit, yeast. Subtle but quite dry hop bite. Mild gin and lime note from the alcohol. Very moderate sour presence. Simply delicious. Happy to be able to procure a bottle. Hope to try more of the Jester King line in the near future

A: golden straw colored and fairly opaque. Humongous white bubbly head. So excited! (Left a lot of nice white lacing)

S: lemon, citrus, wheat, seed.

T: this is astounding. Right off is the lemon grass and farmhouse straw, then some nice funk and sourness, then comes a lovely oak barrel character that just really makes this beer so darn good. There is some bready notes as well.

M: Medium with that natural carbonation. So good.

O: I've never had a Jester King, and I'm glad I picked one up. This is a superb beer. Very complex, very flavorful, and extremely enjoyable. It's one of those beers that you want to sit and enjoy without doing anything else.
