Notes/Commercial Description:
“Provision Ale” is a rough translation of the French term “bière de provision“, which was sometimes used to describe special beers that were suitable for extended storage and aging. Brewed from relatively simple, straightforward ingredients, Mad Meg is golden colored and quite strong, at over 9% ABV. Its palate intertwines delicate farmhouse esters with earthy, spicy hops and clean malt flavors. The name “Mad Meg”, refers to a peasant woman from Flemish folklore, also known as “Dulle Griet” or “Dull Gret”, who leads an army of women to pillage hell. She’s famously depicted in Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1562 painting by the same name.

An offering from Jester King Craft Brewery, a 750mL bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A - Mad Meg has a cloudy blood orange appearance to it, with a nice amount of off-white foam head that lingers for a little while.

S - spice, cirtrusy esters, along with a noticeable amount yeast.

T - on the palate I mainly get an earthy spice with hints of citrusy hops. There is also good balance between the hops and the malt.

M - full-bodied, some chewiness, but to be expected with the cloudiness of the beer. The carbonation is almost spot on, maybe a little more than what I would like for this style of beer, but nothing to noticeably take away from the beer.

O - a very good Belgian-like saison/farmhouse ale. I like the fact that the 9.6% ABV does not kick you in the pants. The higher ABV is subtle and doesn't dominate the beer. I have another bottle that I plan on letting rest for a few months. It will be interesting to see how this ages.

Poured this crazy lady into my 668 Neighbor tulip. Three fingers of white head, hazy orange body: a pretty beer to look at.

Not a whole lot going on in the nose. A bit citrusy, mainly lemon. I may even be smelling some landscaping in there as well. Not that that's a bad thing.

Very tasty. A bit of citrus, a bit of sweet, a bit tart. Very well-rounded. Slightest alcohol burn. My bottle says 8.9% as opposed to the 9.6% it says on the description here.

Other than the slight burn going down, this beer is quite smooth.

Dig it.

October 17, 2013 vintage

A - poured a three finger thick bubbly, off-white head into a tulip glass that left great lacing and sheeting throughout.
S - floral, apples, yeast, hint of horse blanket.
T - fruity, breast, yeasty, and funky.
M - crisp, dry, effervescent.
O - one of the better JK beers I've had. Balanced and complex sour.
