Notes/Commercial Description:
“Provision Ale” is a rough translation of the French term “bière de provision“, which was sometimes used to describe special beers that were suitable for extended storage and aging. Brewed from relatively simple, straightforward ingredients, Mad Meg is golden colored and quite strong, at over 9% ABV. Its palate intertwines delicate farmhouse esters with earthy, spicy hops and clean malt flavors. The name “Mad Meg”, refers to a peasant woman from Flemish folklore, also known as “Dulle Griet” or “Dull Gret”, who leads an army of women to pillage hell. She’s famously depicted in Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1562 painting by the same name.

Poured from a 750 ml crowned bottle into a tulip glass. No dating info that I could see. It was a slightly hazy orange amber color with good carb streams especially with the etching kicking up a lot. It had a massive 3-4 finger head that finally settled to a constant 1-2 fingers. Good lacing with some sticking.

The aroma was led by spicy yeast and a good amount of funk on top of some noble hops and alcohol. Smells dry and peppery. The taste follows the aroma with good spice and pepper bite complimented with a good funk finish. Dry finish to go with the medium mouthfeel. Over carbonated but that could be due to the etching so next time I'll put in a non-etched glass.

Overall, a great funky saison that satisfies both urges if you looking for a saison or something funky. It's pretty dry and good dose of funk so, for me, I need to be really looking for that when I drink it or it might be a bit too much. Available here in TX obviously. Rotation: can see a few bottles a year but as noted I need to be in the mood for this particular taste profile.

Poured this crazy lady into my 668 Neighbor tulip. Three fingers of white head, hazy orange body: a pretty beer to look at.

Not a whole lot going on in the nose. A bit citrusy, mainly lemon. I may even be smelling some landscaping in there as well. Not that that's a bad thing.

Very tasty. A bit of citrus, a bit of sweet, a bit tart. Very well-rounded. Slightest alcohol burn. My bottle says 8.9% as opposed to the 9.6% it says on the description here.

Other than the slight burn going down, this beer is quite smooth.

Dig it.

October 17, 2013 vintage

A - poured a three finger thick bubbly, off-white head into a tulip glass that left great lacing and sheeting throughout.
S - floral, apples, yeast, hint of horse blanket.
T - fruity, breast, yeasty, and funky.
M - crisp, dry, effervescent.
O - one of the better JK beers I've had. Balanced and complex sour.
