750ml bottle, a niggling 10.01% ABV by my local jurisdiction's determination. Also, my new gig has a direct tie to the Austin beer scene, currently, and thus it is almost a job requirement for me to drink this, hoo hah! Hey doktorzee, I'm finally getting to this one!

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with very skinny basal mahogany highlights, and one fat finger of weakly foamy (given the expectations of bottle re-fermentation), creamy light brown head, which leaves nothing beyond a low ebbing of shoreline lace around the glass as it quickly settles out of sight.

It smells of mildly roasted caramel malt, sweet milk chocolate, predominant coffee grounds, a simmering vegetal, and somewhat metallic spiciness, and soft leafy, grassy, earthy hops. The taste is more coffee-forward, as the bitter, earthy cuppa fancy joe essences move on up, pushing the semi-sweet cocoa notes to the side, but not away, per se, with some dark-fruit tinged toffee maltiness, as the green spiciness amps it up a notch or two, overwhelming the efforts of the expectedly persistent sassy noble hops. A skulking, but well masked warmth threatens to a certain degree, but nothing more.

The bubbles are still peppy enough throughout, the body a solid medium weight, and smooth, I suppose, but with a strong spicy/alcohol caveat, i.e. not so much then, really. It finishes fairly sweet, the cocoa, coffee, and fruity notes contending easily enough with the lingering spice and hop offsets.

A genuinely drinkable big-ass stout, heavily informed by weasel-turd coffee and smoked chili peppers. If that is a sentence with any appeal or merit whatsoever to you, then I suggest you drop a few ducats, if you have the chance, and grab a dose of this happy collision, in the land of new-world, old-world brewing confusion. And thank you, In Flames (and Genesis, yeah yeah, whatevs), for inspiring that finishing note.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with light dry coffee, black chocolate and some very subtle peppers notes. Taste is also a mix of peppers, dry coffee with some black chocolates and some dry coffee notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very enjoyable stout with plenty of flavours that are well balanced. I think a bit more pronounced peppers notes would have made things more interesting.
