Gotlandsdricka, meaning “Drink of the Good Land”, is believed to have been the beer of the Vikings. Our rendition of this ancient style is inspired by the traditional farmhouse ales once brewed on the island of Gotland, off the coast of Sweden. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and naturally-conditioned.

Undated cellared bottle at 50 degrees into snifter
Aroma sour with a hint of smoke
Head large (5 cm), off white, fizzy, rapidly diminishing to broken layer
Lacing virtually none, rare small island of small bubbles
Body light yellow, hazy
Flavor changes as the temperature rises – the smokiness dissipates and a spiciness comes through. I have no idea what gale tastes like, so its’ anyones guess if that’s the source of the spiciness. There is no taste of alcohol, hops, or diacetyl. A woody and smoky aftertaste follows.
Palate medium, slightly oily, lively carbonation.

An interesting brew. My bottle has been cellared for a year and tastes different (better) than a fresher bottle. I don’t know what gale tastes like, but the juniper is barely noticeable. I think if I lived on an island off the coast of Sweden, I’d probably brew and drink a lot of this.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy golden color ale with a nice generous white head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of light salty rustic malt notes with some spices, juniper and light smoked notes also noticeable. Taste is a unique mix of juniper, smoked notes with some salty rustic malt notes clearly identifiable. Body is about average with good carbonation. Very interesting beers for sure but I am not sure I would feel the need to drink this on a regular basis.

A: A 3 finger head belched from its orifice into a standard pint glass. The bright cloud white foam held strong for many moons white the brilliantly golden liquid brought forth bubbles from the depths. When the clouds finally parted the spiders web was revealed on the edge of the glass.

S: The smell of smoke from the burning fires from the night before, earth and nature revealed underneath. A faint whisper of sweet breads and berries. Clean and crisp as the nights sky.

T: The balance of smoke and earth once again washes over my senses. The smoke is fresher this time and with more phenols peering through. There is a firm, yet noble bitterness about this grog that I came to enjoy over a few swallows. Crisp and clean like the legendary beers of distant Germanic lands. The balance is speared down the center.

M: Dry as a drought and crisp as a winter night. Light in body like a fair haired maiden and a soft bitterness left on the scenes, not unlike the fair haired maiden.

O: Worth the journey for this tasty brew? Indeed. Not to the liking of all, but hit the spot on a mild almost-spring night.
