English pub ale meets the French farmhouse tradition and American oak aging in this dry, drinkable farmhouse mild ale. Full-flavored, but brewed with enough restraint to be highly sessionable. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and naturally conditioned.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear deep dark mahogany in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising slowly along the edges of the glass and moderate garnet red + ruby red + dark cola brown colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall creamy sudsy foamy light tan head that slowly reduces to a large patch of thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of lightly roasted + toasted + dark + nutty (pecan and walnut) + caramel malts with a light amount of brown sugar + light fruit (pear) sweetness. Light aromas of spicy + earthy hops. Slightly heavier than light aromas of oak + vanilla + caramel.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of lightly roasted + toasted + dark + nutty (pecan and walnut) + caramel malts with a light amount of brown sugar + light fruit (pear) sweetness. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of oak along with hints of caramel + vanilla. Finally there are light flavors of spicy + earthy hops. There is a very light amount of roasty bitterness which lingers in the finish.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Very slightly creamy with a hint of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pleasant mouthfeel. Enjoyable and very interesting with the pairing of the English Dark Mild and Belgian Table beer styles - lots of complexity of aroma and flavor. Definitely leaves me wanting to have it again to tease out other subtleties.

Bought this in Austin, Texas 3 years ago; it is Batch #9 dated 09/06/16. Been well stored cool & upright in my basement. Decided to pop it open in honor of it being my 2,000 beer listed on Beer Advocate. Poured from the 750ml bottle into a Jester King snifter style glass. Nice looking beer on the pour, dark body, deep amber in color, with a solid two fingered white head. The aroma is tannic, mild sour cherries, some smoke. First sip is a complex mix of cherry tartness, a bit of grain, mild smoke and a tiny hint of bitterness. The very low 2.9% abv allows you to consume as much as you want without any real alcohol buzz at all. Farmhouse ales aren't really my thing but this beer was fascinating to taste, so far off the commercial scale that I totally get the name!

2017 bottle poured into a goblet. A clear and beautiful copper red color with a medium sized tan head. Great lacing. Aroma was bready with faint fruity notes and mild funky esters. The taste was somewhat different. A gentle tartness with dry bread, cherries, and floral notes. Light bodied and clean. Surprisingly more bitter than expected. Fun beer.

Had this earlier in the summer. Seemed like a neat summer beer to check out, awesome name and imagery for the beer.

Pours a brown color. Expected something lighter and yellow. Small 1/3" off white head. Aroma of a little bit of oak and maybe some barley going on, almost brown malt like red ale notes with it.

Taste drops big time on the oak. Because of the relative light bodied-ness of the beer, the oak really comes across as strong as it has/can for a year long exposure. Came off stronger than some beers with 24 months of oak aging. Reminded me a bit of a belgian table strength beer from a local producer in Reno. (St James). Significant amount of malt and wood flavors push the entirety of this beer. So much more flavorful than beers twice its strength. A nutty brackish light cranberry feel in the mouth feel.

Seems like quite the mashup. Prolly wouldn't repeat purchase, but I did enjoy the uniqueness of this beer, definitely worth checking out at least once.

The overall BA score of this - to me - is deceiving. For the style, this is a solid option that is oaky, dry & refreshing.

Smell is most incredible. Dry & woodsy scent inspires a camping trip of bonfire.

Very well done and consistent from batch to batch.

amazingly subtle, yet at the same time one of the more grain driven beers i have had from jester king, this is unlike any other, and its awesome, i do not understand the low ratings here, except perhaps because folks cant place this squarely within the confines of a particular style, but to me thats what makes this exciting! its a rich chestnut color, surprisingly substantial in color and body for its ultra low abv, holding a tall almost white head too. the aroma is lighter than a lot of them on the jester king funk and tartness blend, but still identifiable as theirs, just balanced out a bit more by the malt, and seemingly tamed by the oak rather than enhanced by it. some nuttiness to the grain, even a little unexpected brown sugar sweetness, corn husk, acorn flour, and raisin. there is a nice funk to the finish, subtle dried citrus and even a bready element. the oak is nice here, wrapping this all up neatly together, some tannins and vanilla notes, but its all very mild. an incredibly flavorful and complete session type brew, i am surprised it doesnt get more love here on BA. a jester king classic at this point!

A: Pours a well-attenuated, deep red-brown color with a creamy two-finger head. Very nice.
S: Has a tannic, subtly vinous aroma, with malt notes that are simultaneously chalky and nutty with hints of cocoa.
T: Immediately has a harsh, salty, tannic aftertaste that is quite unpleasant. After the salty tannic notes even out and die off it becomes more pleasant, allowing the toasty and fruity notes notes to advance on the palate, it is definitely tart (at first it seems sour), it feels like a beer that is halfway to becoming a flemish red or oud bruin. Even though the unpleasant tannic notes die off, they remain present throughout.
M: Dry, cant complain.
O: This beer takes some time mellow out and become pleasant and even then isn't a revelation. The malty notes come on a bit too strong. As I said before this beer feels like it's about halfway along it's journey to becoming what it is supposed to be, like an Oud Bruin or Flemish Red that isn't done yet. It's not bad, but I can't recommend it.

Beer pours a hazy brown with an off white head. The smell is predominantly coffee with some strange fruit smell. The flavor is slightly tart but not horrible. My first experience with a beer with this small of alcohol content I can see the benefits but prefer the highpoint beers. Was basically wanting to try something from Jester King Brewery and this is what I found. Overall wouldn't buy again.

This is one of the more interesting beers I have come across. A Farmhouse Mild? What could possibly go wrong? Very little, as it turns out. Poured cold from a 750-ml bottle into a proper lidded stein. Hazy, light caramel-sauce colored pour, with a two-finger very light tan head that settled into a thin ring with a spotty cap. Light caramel on the nose and palate, with Meyer lemon, rose petal, and a little barnyard funk. There is some very pleasant bitterness on the soft palate. Mouthfeel is light to medium. The finish is on the dry side, with a little lingering citrus and tart cherry. This is a very pleasant and drinkable beer, and at 2.9% ABV one could drink it all day long. This isn't going to have universal appeal, and it is quite expensive; however, if you like farmhouse ales, the uniqueness factor alone makes this well worth a splurge.

This one pours a muddled brown and fills to a very dark, reddish-brown, but in the sunlight it’s a shimmering, clear dark garnet. The head is a fuzzy khaki finger that dies to a creamy tan collar that has a soft cling.

Smell is funkier, nuttier, woodier, and cheesier than the beer turns out to be on the tongue, with notes of pie crust, candied nuts and brie.

Taste is lightly tart and very faintly smoked with toasty malt. It's almost like a wild Oktoberfest paired with some light, nutty oak and a tart lemon-cherry finish.

A medium to light crisp body finishes semi-wet, and the tartness seems like it increases with time, but subtly, helping it to become more complex.
