Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: elNopalero on 02-14-2012

English pub ale meets the French farmhouse tradition and American oak aging in this dry, drinkable farmhouse mild ale. Full-flavored, but brewed with enough restraint to be highly sessionable. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and naturally conditioned.

25.4 oz. bomber poured into nonic
(Batch #6 -- Dec. 2, 2013)

L: black-purple-red with no light, dark ruby red up to light ... very clear but a little debris floating in it (very little); almost no head, pours like it's flat ... tan foam reaches almost 1/4-inch thick but has huge airy bubbles in it, and the entire thing disappears quickly

S: super dry white wine ... sour grapes; as it warms, there's some wood-oak notes

T: oak, lemons, sour grapes, white wine -- it's like an oak-aged dry white wine ... quite sour and as different as anything I've ever tasted in the beer family. no typical hop or malt flavors ... the sour yeasty flavor dominates with some oak thrown in

F: watery, light, but the tartness and flavor makes this feel work fairly well ... it's got just enough carbonation to help fill it out

O: different. VERY different. i know almost nothing about the English dark mild, so it's hard for me to do any kind of expert analysis, but i'd imagine there's very little about this brew that tastes like an English mild. it is farmhouse all the way ... so sour

Jester King's commitment to the farmhouse yeast is commendable, even if some of their attempts at mixing styles don't quite work. This one is an interesting mix with some cool flavor, but it isn't the best I've had from JK. (1,302 characters)

A: Pours a chocolate brown/ruby red color. A pathetic bubbly white head forms and vanishes in a second with no lace. From the look, there seems to be almost no carbonation to this at all.
S: Mild oak, smoke, and vanilla in the nose. Followed by an astringent, almost metallic aroma. A strange acidic twang.
T: Ug, no better here. Very mild oak and vanilla flavors. Burnt toast. Astringent with a metallic tiny flavor. Again, a strange acidity. Not good.
M/D: To say this is light is generous. So paper thin, and hardly any carbonation here. Not something I care to come back to or finish.

After a very surprising beer in RU-55, I follow it up with this. I remember loving this beer when it was not "farmhouse." The original version was great, especially on cask. This is a thin, unappealing beer that has no business in the English mild or farmhouse styles. A complete mess. (875 characters)

If I lowered my rating to closer to the current average, what contribution have I made? (87 characters)

Justify rating with a review? I didn't like it very much. (57 characters)

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter

A - Deep brown, certainly cannot see through. about 2 inches of white/ light brown head. head faded within a few minutes.

S - smoked porter?

T - very light. mild. smoked flavor.

M - watery. low viscosity

O - Its a replacement for water. Not suggesting this is anything close to BMC. Most likely won't ever purchase again. $8 smoked water? na.... (388 characters)

Much darker than one would expect given it's low ABV, but the pour is a clear dark brown. It's dark enough that you don't see how clear it is unless it's held near a light source. The head is beige and a finger thick, but lacks in retention.

The smells are subtle, even with swirling. Strangely, smells of veggies. Some dark fruits, caramel, and smoke.

I don't care for the taste. Reminds me of watered down cola, though the carbonation is there. Earthy tastes, with hops most noticeable in the finish.

Very loose, watery feel. Light bodied despite the color. High carbonation, prickly feel in the swallow. Lingering bitterness.

It doesn't work for me. Tastes and feels lager-like, with the exception of the carbonation, nothing jumps at me. (747 characters)
