Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: elNopalero on 02-14-2012

English pub ale meets the French farmhouse tradition and American oak aging in this dry, drinkable farmhouse mild ale. Full-flavored, but brewed with enough restraint to be highly sessionable. Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and naturally conditioned.

Reviewed on 7/19/13 Bomber in snifter

A - Pours a dark brown with some red highlights. Has a two finger light tan head that dissipates quickly but a thin cap holds out.

S - Sweet malts and caramel upfront. Dark fruits, maybe some cherry? Notes of spice too.

T - Well I didn't smell any oak but its very prevalent in the flavor. Oak, vanilla, and malt dominate. Notes of caramel and molasses. Finishes dry. Flavors started to wear on me as the beer warmed

M - Very light body and high carbonation. Finishes dry, very drinkable.

O - Interesting and tasty beer. Flavors were subtle but enjoyable and beer is endlessly drinkable. I ended up knocking a few points off on it due to the flavors starting to wear on me as the bear warmed but other than that enjoyable and very different.

A: Pours a chocolate brown/ruby red color. A pathetic bubbly white head forms and vanishes in a second with no lace. From the look, there seems to be almost no carbonation to this at all.
S: Mild oak, smoke, and vanilla in the nose. Followed by an astringent, almost metallic aroma. A strange acidic twang.
T: Ug, no better here. Very mild oak and vanilla flavors. Burnt toast. Astringent with a metallic tiny flavor. Again, a strange acidity. Not good.
M/D: To say this is light is generous. So paper thin, and hardly any carbonation here. Not something I care to come back to or finish.

After a very surprising beer in RU-55, I follow it up with this. I remember loving this beer when it was not "farmhouse." The original version was great, especially on cask. This is a thin, unappealing beer that has no business in the English mild or farmhouse styles. A complete mess.

If I lowered my rating to closer to the current average, what contribution have I made?

Justify rating with a review? I didn't like it very much.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter

A - Deep brown, certainly cannot see through. about 2 inches of white/ light brown head. head faded within a few minutes.

S - smoked porter?

T - very light. mild. smoked flavor.

M - watery. low viscosity

O - Its a replacement for water. Not suggesting this is anything close to BMC. Most likely won't ever purchase again. $8 smoked water? na....

Much darker than one would expect given it's low ABV, but the pour is a clear dark brown. It's dark enough that you don't see how clear it is unless it's held near a light source. The head is beige and a finger thick, but lacks in retention.

The smells are subtle, even with swirling. Strangely, smells of veggies. Some dark fruits, caramel, and smoke.

I don't care for the taste. Reminds me of watered down cola, though the carbonation is there. Earthy tastes, with hops most noticeable in the finish.

Very loose, watery feel. Light bodied despite the color. High carbonation, prickly feel in the swallow. Lingering bitterness.

It doesn't work for me. Tastes and feels lager-like, with the exception of the carbonation, nothing jumps at me.
