Visited during a conference on a Saturday night.

Atmosphere: Loud - place was about 75% full. Plenty of tables in the middle and booths at the walls. Typical sports bar type atmosphere, but you could see where the pizzas were fired through one wall, some of the brewing equipment through another wall, and the tap line-up behind the counter had a nice copper metal motif going. Nothing special though.

Quality: The night I was there Sierra Nevada was the guest tap list - quite a lot of good Sierra Nevada beers to choose from - some of the higher rated stuff. As for the brews from this company, I only had the blonde that evening, which was okay.

Service: Friendly enough staff. A little slow at times but otherwise attentive and friendly to questions and beer requests. Used the right glasses with the type of beer ordered - noted this throughout the place and with the glasses behind the bar as well. Plenty of Tulips, Nonics, snifters, and even a few chalices available.

Selection: As with quality - good selection of Sierra Nevada the evening I was there, and a reasonably large amount of their own brews on tap as well. Something for every taste.

Food: Had the beer battered fish and a salad, and it was good. I cannot say the same for the Buffalo Chicken pizza my friend had though - I did not care for it.

Overall: Good in some categories, so-so in others. Need to try more of the beers on tap and see how this brewery does in other styles, as the blonde was just okay. Felt the prices were reasonable.

Ran across this place while looking for retail craft beer stores in downtown SD, sat down and was pleasantly surprised. Large place with a contemporary feel in an old building which was very cool. The beer and food were good, however, with so many more wonderful breweries to visit in SD, I wouldn't put this on the top of list of brewery must visits if in SD.

First I'll talk about the bad. The guest beer list is very small, and is unfortunately crowded by a number of "crafty" options for the regular Joe and Jane who don't want anything too interesting (read: good). However, the house beers are anywhere from decent to excellent, and include happy hour prices and are always cheaper than the guest options; these beers make the brewpub well worth your time.

The food is good but not consistently great across the board. I have loved some dishes and was overwhelmed by others. The selection is nice, but I'm not blown away, either.

I love the service, however. I haven't been to the bar counter, the wait staff is very friendly and attentive. I'm a huge customer service person, and I always feel very welcome.

I visited The Beer Company recently for the Best Damn Night Of The Barrels. It's a fairly large place inside that reminds me of an independent BJ's type establishment down to a number of TVs playing sports. There was a bar area with seating and tables around the rest of the space. They had 8 of their own beers on tap with a handful of guest beers. I didn't see if they had a bottle list. All the beers I tried seemed to be a bit warm but otherwise OK. Service was pretty good but it took a while to get the attention of the staff at the bar. I found their house beers to be decent but nothing too special. I would probably make a quick stop in again just to see if they have anything new on tap, but it wouldn't be a first choice destination for me.

The Beer Company is a small capacity brewpub situated smack in the middle of Downtown, among the lost tourists, the seedy drifters, the psychotic homeless and commuters waiting for the No. 30 bus. It is also a few blocks from the Gaslight District and its many purveyors of depravity. The venue is of moderate size with a sports bar vibe to it: noisy, semi-crowded, with a U-shaped marble bar amid cushy booths lining the Broadway Street side.

As noted, Beer Company offers seven house beers, one of which is a pleasant stout, along with a few dozen guests. In addition to the stout, I quaffed their nice Elimination IPA and a Wyatt Earp Red Ale. (Earp lived in the Gaslight District at one point in his later life.) The food was the usual pub grub and was served by attractive and efficient, if indifferent, servers. That said, it was the second official stop during my recent SDBW 2012 trip. On to Number Three....
