Bottled 9/30/2013.

750 ml capped bottle with an unattractive orange and brown label.

Seved chilled into a goblet, Funkwerks dubbel is a deep redish brown with good clarity and thick off-white head.

Aroma is sweet and nutty with caramel and toffee undertones.

Flavor is full of depth with chocolate, caramel, and nuts. It has a subtle yeast character that only adds to the enjoyment.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated.

Overall a really nice dubbel from a small American brewery that claims to only do saisons.

Pours mahogeny with a mocha head. Aroma offers a touch of the spicy belgian yeast with a hint of some candied sugar, dark cherry's, plums, and chocolate. Letting this one warm up some made a definite difference. Flavor follows suit with a nice dry finish. A somewhat thin medium body, some activity. Overall, was reluctant to try this one after being so disappointed in their Quad and their initial attempt at a dubbel (Son of Nothing) not being that good, but ended up being pleasantly surprised. Thought this was really good. Would be cool to drink this side by side with Ommegang's Abbey Ale and compare the two. Would happily drink again and will be disappointed if I dont.

on tap at hops and pie, i gather this is a new one. very light for a dubbel, slightly confusing in that way, tasty, but minimalist. light brown to dark copper on color with just a short half inch of white fluff. nose is more like saison yeast than classic belgian yeast, and i get a lot of that candy sugar sweetness, with a touch of roast malt. the flavor is the same, with the flavors of the sugars being a bit exposed. whatever yeast is used, is more saison-like, and as such doesn't process the candy sugar completely i don't think, quite a bit of it is left over, without a ton of sweetness. carbonated very well, but lacking in body. for me, a dubbed should be a big robust palate coating beer, and this one drinks far too light. clean finish though, and i think this generally has to fall into the hybrid zone between a saison and a dubbel, interesting, but not my favorite stuff from funkwerks.
