On tap at Jax Fish House, Ft. Collins CO.

Golden yellow, somewhat cloudy with a bright white head that persists with a lot of lacing.

Fruity aroma with apples, pears and some citrus with a lesser degree of spice and finally a bit of musty yeast.

Taste is predominately fruit with sweet apples balanced with mild bready malt and mild bitterness with just a hint of ethanol. Very drinkable but with ample interesting flavor.

Medium creamy body with moderate carbonation.

Great complexity of flavor, well balanced and excellent example of the saison style. Refreshing and drinkable but with plenty of flavor. My favorite saison to date.

750ml bottle, bottled on 10/21/2013. Poured into an unlabeled snifter today, 1/20/2014.

App- cloudy yellow with orange hue, very effervescent white head requiring some time to pour. Lots of retention and lacing. Very pretty.

Smell- crisp non-descript tartness with no hint of fruit character. Yeast and associated spiciness. Floral character. Boring.

Taste- Crackers, slight spiciness, pepper. A little bit of butter. Not that much going on.

Mouthfeel- Thinner bodied, solid carbonation. A bit watery. Very dry finish.

Overall- Not that interesting, nothing stands out while drinking this beer.

My wife got me this for my birthday and it was much appreciated. Actually split this over turkey dinner on Christmas Eve, and thought it went well with the bird and some of our other fare.

Used kind of a tall, stemmed water glass for this one, like what you see at hotel conferences. It's a go to for me when I do saisons. Bottle has a big black label that just says SAISON on it in green - no messing around there. Pours a dim yellow with massive fluffy head and more cloud the further into the bottle you get.

Aroma is nice and tart, sweet and citrusy, with mineral, bubblegum and tropical fruit. Flavor is tart and sweet, with almost an underlying butteriness to it, and a lightly bitter finish. Mouthfeel is light to medium, light to medium carbonation, and has a bit of an uplifting airiness to it that feels refreshing.

This is what saison is all about. Great offering from Funkwerks.

on-tap at Root Down in Denver

Pale golden body - a bit cloudy, nice white foam. Crisp with a dry a rather dry finish, notes of pear juice, pepper, green apple, a pinch of lemon zest. A nice, traditional, saison that is a very logical perma-draft at the impressive food-haven of Root Down.

Poured a gorgeous semi-cloudy yellow with two fingers of gorgeous white head and ample bubbles sticking to the side of the glass. Quite beautiful to look at. Scents of apricot, barnyard funk, slight pear, faint sour notes and undertones of bubblegum. A very pleasing aroma, hits all the classic saison notes perfectly. Taste begins with Belgian barnyard funk, slight pear, some faint hints of bubblegum, slight hints of apricot pit, sour wild yeast notes, which are very faint but come through a bit stronger on the finish and become more prominent as the beer warms, some slight straw, very faint peach, slight grassiness and a bit of slight grain on the rather dry finish. A deceptively complex flavor profile that changes as the beer warms, opening up new flavors, but never becoming too much. It retains an easy drinkability and is amazingly refreshing. Mouthfeel is light bodied, with moderate carbonation, aiding the ease with which you can drink this beer. Overall its an excellent saison, one of, if not the best that I have tasted. It hits all the perfect notes and is a complex, refreshing, joyous experience.

750ml brown bottle with no freshness date though there is a suggestion of cellaring this beer for no more than 2 years.

Look: Perfectly clear pale golden color, amazing display of froth and lace

Smell: Asian pear, fresh baked pita bread, dragon fruit, slightly earthy, nutty yeast, herbal, peppery phenols, very aromatic

Taste: Dry malt backbone, smooth, slight juiciness, chalky yeast, grapenuts, spicy, crackers, hay, light pepperiness, very dry finish

So flavorful with out being over the top, truly a well honed Saison that seriously rivals many of the originals from Belgium & France.

A: Slightly hazy golden straw color with a huge bright white rocky head. Great head retention and tons of lacing.

S: Pepper and spice at first with lemon zest, grass, hay, tart apples and just a hint of funk.

T: Light black pepper with lemon zest, a bit of tart green apples, grassy/hay and a bit of funkiness. Finish is fairly dry and very clean. This is extremely clean, no offensive or overly assertive flavors at all.

M: On the heavier side of light. Carbonation is not as active as I thought it would be. Feels very slick.

O: Great drinkability. I can see why this was the 2012 GABF gold medal winner for French-Belgium style Saison. A great Saison, doesn't get much better than this.

Courtesy of Cowsandbells. Thanks!

Pours a cloudy dark yellow color with a monster fluffy white head that has fair retention and crazy lazing. The aroma is classic saison with lemons, spices, mums and earthy yeasts. The taste is also classic saison and is reminiscent of the duponts; many complex flavors at play here--I get lemons, pears, a bit of apple, salt, pepper, honey and some biscuit. The palate is silky smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long, but not dry, with lingering fruity yeasts.

poured 750ml bottle into Duvel tulip

A - A light golden sunshine yellow that is slightly hazy. Fat billowy 3 finger head slowly fades to a thin cap and thick collar around the glass. Blotches of lacing reamain.

S - Spice and pepper, straw, grass, apples and pears, touch of lemon zest. . A slight hint of funk rounds it off.

T - Wheat, grass, and fruit notes with a good amount of spice. Hints of herbs and lemon zest. A bit of coriander and clover with just a touch of funk.

M - Light and refreshing with high levels of carbonation. A bit dry on the finish and a pleasant Sasion all around.

O - Another nice offering from Funkwerks. It's is a tasty and easy drinking Saison that you can finish in one sitting on a hot day.

Bottle: Poured a dirty beige color ale with a super large off-white foamy head with great retention and some super good lacing. Aroma of rustic malt with light peppery yeast notes and some light dry hops in the aftertaste. Taste is also dominated by rustic malt with balanced level of sweetness with some peppery yeast notes and some dry hoppy notes in the aftertaste. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation. Very solid interpretation of the style with great balance and easily drinkable character.

Appearance: Hazy light orange with a very lively head.

Aroma: Yeast, lemon, a bit of coriander.

Taste: Very good tasting saison, not overly complex but better than most.

Moutfeel: Smooth, medium bodied, a very refresing mouthfeel.

Bottle pour at the 2013 Firestone Walker Invitational held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, CA.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, spice, and yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with fruit and spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of yeast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Beer pours straw yellow/gold with a strong a rocky white head that sits atop the beer and forms nice lacing. Great head retention.

The aroma is dominated by the yeast which is clearly french saison. Pepper, tropic fruit, lots of phenols.

The beer is pretty unadventurous to taste. There are some phenols to taste and the finish is on the dry side. That being said it is true to style and very refreshing.

Mouthfeel is great. Very silky, probably from the yeast strain.

Overall this is a very enjoyable beer. I am not the biggest fans of the phenols but it really showcase the style and how enjoyable and refreshing it can be.

On-tap at a local establishment, served in a 16oz snifter

A – Good looking beer here coming off the tap line. A big, fluffy white head sits atop a hazy orange body. Head retention is great and lacing is nice as well.

S – Typical saison here, but it has some stronger notes as well. Lots of lemon, fresh cut grass, honey sweetness. Some light pepper and lime.

T – Complex malts, faint sweetness. Juicy, big fresh lemon notes. Great yeast tones as well, this is quite funky, but very well balanced.

M – Big and boisterous for a saison, comes across almost as a tripel, big, boozy, and complex.

O – Just great, a wonderfully bright and complex beer. Nuff said.

Pours a hazed hay color with a thumb+ of pearl colored head. Chill haze remains, stellar head retention & lacing

S: Apple skins, lemon zest & not much else

T: Apple skins, white pepper, white grape & a bit of honey suckle up front. Slight dry grassyness, a bit of lemon zest & pears as this warms, plus some coriander. Finishes with pears, lemony hops, white pepper, ginger & tangerine

MF: Medium bodied, crisp carbonation, nicely blended & balanced

Great drinkability, this is a great take on the style. This is my first Funkwerks beer, I must have more! The spices make this beer so interesting & drinkable

Peachy juice hue, pour carefully or in no time you can have a glass of rocky white foam. Terrific retention and clumpy lacing left on the glass.

Black pepper, pear, powder, tangerine and green grapes. Slightly musty with hay and lemongrass. A delicate balance of spice and fruity esters, slightly funky as a detect a bit of soft white cheese.

Grainy with some wet hay and lemony wheat as the white fruit notes begin to rise with green apple and pear, slight herbal bitterness and musty funk mingle with a soapy coriander and clove, some mineral undertones begin to hit the palate as the beer warms. Scrubs dry.

The yeast really makes this beer feel a bit heavier as it warms. The carbonation is ideal, the drink pleasant and drying though it got difficult to handle this bottle solo.

A quality saison no doubt, the spice, fruit flavors and yeast are all very delicate and balanced. I could see the spice profile getting tightened up a bit the musty flavors and mineral twinges really being to hurt the drink as it warms. Tasty.

Incredible true Belgian taste exudes from the glass of this Funkwerks brewery. Where many American brewers' ales are kinda Belgianesque, they seem to be on training wheels. This Saison is poppin' wheelies and gettin' air.

With its peachy straw hue, the rustic ale offers up a rocky, ivory-stained head. Spider webbing lace results from an intricate weave of clinging foam. Its high retention and firm yeasty haze continue to sing praises of well designed farmhouse ales.

Spice, malt and fruit sculpt the aromas- starting with pear, apples and lemony esters; these scents join forces with stern earthy notes of hay and fresh grass. Light citrus tones bounce off of a soft wheat backdrop and conclude with a light creamy malt tang and vinous white wine.

Fruit overtones kick off the flavor show with oranges, white grapes, apple skins, and lemon peels. A semi-sweet foundation of powdered sugar and dough soon recede to allow for a spicy middle palate of freshly grated ginger, coriander, freshly cut grass, and baled hay. Musty and vinous to close, the farmhouse ale leaves you with impressions of white pepper to close.

Its dry and spicy texture starts early but really kicks into gear as the malt sweetness and bread textures fade. All that's left behind is an effortlessly smooth hop bitterness, warm alcohol, and a bone-dry peppery-ness.

When a brewery doesn't have to contend with American-style beers and can simply focus on Belgian styles, the discipline in taste is obvious- this is just a more mature ale.

Served chilled into a fluted tulip.

Pours a hazy straw color with 2 inches of foamy white head that quickly recedes leaving a heavy surface layer and lacing.

Aromas of sour grapes and citrus with a musty, spicy background.

Tastes of sour grapes, citrus zest, clove and pepper. With that musty, leathery and spicy funk indicative of the style.

Medium bodied with a crisp, dry finish and milder aftertaste than you would expect.

Overall, a very nice example of the style. Complex, but not overwhelming. Crisp and refreshing, as it should be.

Poured from a bottle into a Southern Tier Pumking tulip glass.

A: Pours a light orange, hazy body. Bright, white, huge head. This one looks mega carbonated. Great head retention - clings to the glass and runs down the side slowly.

S: Funky yeast esters. Black peppery spice. Exotic fruits - guava, pineapple, papaya, mango, passionfruit. White wine grapes.

T: Spicy black pepper straight from the nose. Strong saison yeast and a little funk, but definitely not too much. The fruitiness is there at the finish, but it's not as strong as the nose suggests. The grapey, white wine taste is evident.

M: Light-Medium Body. High Carbonation. Prickly.

O: A very nice example of the style. I love the complexity that comes through from the exotic fruits, balanced with the black peppery spice. Very pleased with what I've had from FW thus far.

750ml bottle into a tall tulip

A: Pours a slightly hazy, light golden color with four fingers of dense head on a very careful pour. Woah, this beer is carbonated. Head retention is extremely good.

S: Macintosh apples mixed with clove starts out this very spicy aroma. As the massive head slowly dies down, I get modest amounts of peppercorn and a bit of lemon zest.

T: Similar to the aroma, I get Macintosh apples and lemon zest upfront. Bready malts are fairly strong for the style with a bit of caramel sweetness. Clove and spices are fairly restrained, but easily apparent.

Poured on tap into a Funkwerks globe glass at the tasting room in Fort Collins.

A gorgeous fluffy white head is presented about 3 fingers, and huge staying power. It has caverns and a wonderful peaked whipped top. Body color is an orb glowing lemon unfiltered gem with hints of brown edges towards the sides. When finally settles it leaves a giant puck.

Nose is classic saison but incredibly subtle and balanced. Mild possibly brett with hints of lemon, it comes out as some type of grass garden large floral aroma, dripping with pollen and muted honey. Hits of spiced butter round it all out, with just a touch of heat.

Malts just roll all over the palate, there's some faint sweet bread like character that comes from this also. Big chewy body, hints of honey on the finish. Dense and juicy but in controlled almost as if the beer is kept to be not too aggressive.

I really like this take on this style from these guys, it's quite memorable and one thing that seems to make their saison stand out from all the others. Delicious stuff.
