750ml brown bottle with no freshness date though there is a suggestion of cellaring this beer for no more than 2 years.

Look: Perfectly clear pale golden color, amazing display of froth and lace

Smell: Asian pear, fresh baked pita bread, dragon fruit, slightly earthy, nutty yeast, herbal, peppery phenols, very aromatic

Taste: Dry malt backbone, smooth, slight juiciness, chalky yeast, grapenuts, spicy, crackers, hay, light pepperiness, very dry finish

So flavorful with out being over the top, truly a well honed Saison that seriously rivals many of the originals from Belgium & France.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into cervoise.
A: Pours a clear greenish yellow with high carbonation producing a 3+ inch bubbly white head with excellent retention (head settles down to a 1 inch rocky white and stays that way for a while). (4.25)
S: Asian pear, soft minerals, light toast, white pepper, and soft citrus (orange especially, but also tangerine). With warming, a nutty vanilla note emerges. (4.25)
T: Crisp peppery citrus...fresh, light, and yet biting. Orange (more juice than peel), white pepper, and sweet lemon. With warming, vanilla, clove, and almond emerge. Very nice! (4.25)
M: Light, fresh, and crisp feel. Solidly sweet throughout (think orange juice). Pleasant effervescence. (4)
D: A solid saison...nice example of style. A nicely complex, refreshing, and sessionable brew (hard to find all of those in a single beer). Seek it out! (4.5)

Appearance: I confess that I have been perhaps too excited to try this since receiving it from the Rare Beer Club earlier this week. The beer pours a pale, hazy gold into my tulip. A fluffy white head of moderately sized bubbles sits on top and decides to stay for a while. I’m digging the bottle labeling too – all good stuff.

Smell: Black pepper and a distinct herbal note come across first. There’s also citrus – oranges and lemons – following along, and a familiar Belgian clove and spice feel. Can’t wait to dive in.

Taste: This is quite a saison; in a word, I’d call it “refined”. All of the flavors in the nose come together again in the mouth, in a very balanced and civilized way. As the beer warms, other stuff starts happening, including a slight grassiness that hints at, but never becomes, full-on funk. The finish is bone dry.

Mouthfeel: The beer is moderately to highly carbonated, and it works perfectly – it dances on the tongue.

Drinkability: Very high, but caution is advised. One could easily go through a bottle of this with only a superficial appreciation of the complexity in the brew. Slow down, take your time, and savor this one – it’s worth it.

A Saison by Funkwerks that is not very funky, rather more mellow. Poured a cloudy, rich, yellow color. Big, fluffy white head. Smells quite phenolic. Spice and pepper. Pale fleshed fruit. Very yeasty in the aroma. Flavor doesn't differentiate itself much. Phenolic, grainy, skunky, apples and pears and lemons. Medium bodied. Softer carbonation. Not in love with this. I prefer my Saisons to taste differently.

Bottle.

Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy, pale golden body with a foamy, white head kept good and frothy by the stray streams of effervescence bubbling up from within.

Smell: Lightly sweetish, lightly creamyish notes of pilsner and wheat malt. Fresh, inviting blood orange and sweet lemon along with their fruity pals, grape, 'nana, and pear. Big pinch of coriander and fresh-ground black pepper pulling in a little noted earthiness.

Taste: Honeyish, cereal-sweet maltiness atop the doughy pils and soft wheat. Restrained sweetness. Snappy, sharp herbal notes cut with brightly acidic citrus juices and soon softened with spiced pear, banana and white grape. Soft yet lively finish, with final hints of herbs, fruit and piquant spices.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-high carbonation.

Overall: Plenty of saison goodness to be had here, without the need to resort to spices or unwarranted alcohol levels. If only Philip Seymour Hoffman could have lived long enough to enjoy it. Pity.
