Appearance: a golden orange color. a huge, two plus finger, foamy white head that sticks around for ages and leaves a sticky lacing. completely opaque.

Smell: candi sugar, belgian yeast, fruity flavors.

Taste: opens up with a little bit of bitterness. fades to a light candi sugar and a strong belgian yeast. some very light tropical fruit notes. some alcohol

Mouthfeel: some bitterness up front. strong carbonation but still very dry.

Overall: a well brew and tasty saison, but not quite my favorite. I was hoping the fruity notes were a bit stronger.

this beer was so far ahead of its time, its crazy. i love it, always have, although i highly suspect the recipe has changed some since the maori king listing here, which is why i review it under this heading after a long time away from this beauty. its one of the better saisons in colorado, especially for an all the time beer, and now that its available in affordable four packs, its spot on. i think some of the tropical hops have dropped out of it though, i remember it being so alive with flavors like white grape and passion fruit that comes from strains like nelson, before nelson was even part of the vernacular. its tame compared to my memory, but i have also tasted an awful lot of beer since then, and may have numbed just a bit. still really nicely flavored with one of my favorite yeasts in the country, but the hops seem a lot less pungent and fresh and juicy. the abv also seems to have creeped up a bit, originally at 7%, listed here at 7.5%, and the bottle i just drank says 8%, but the beer seems no drier perhaps some extra grain or sugar in here to spike it, maybe slow demand or something, i dont know. the beer is still amazing, soft in feel, layered in its yeast and grain interactions, and not like most american made examples of the style. this is the beer that put funkwerks on the map back when they open, and it remains one of my favorite every day saisons. i think there is some definite batch variability though...

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #77 (June 2013):

LOOK: Cloudy peach, healthy head and lacing

SMELL: Floral, fruity, cantaloupe, alcohol, bready

TASTE: Lively, creamy carbonation, light bodied, peaches, ginger, melon, pineapple, pear, esters, white pepper, bready, spicy, yeasty linger

We’re a bit skeptical when people slap the word “Imperial” in front of a style these days, but not with this beer. Funkwerks has done a great job in punching up the Saison style with a ton of complex fruity characters (thanks to using New Zealand Rakau hops), while keeping drinkability and finish in tact. Perhaps a bit too yeasty, but damn fine drinking here.

Bomber bottle with brewed/bottled on dating. Purchased at the source.

Hazed and lovely lookin' under a frothy and rocky off white head that lasts nicely.

Fruity nose with ripe melon coming forward

Tasty, complex and thoroughly saison in character. Fruit, spice, yeast, crafty goodness.

Love the style and love this beer.

Please consider distribution to the NYC area

Pours a billowing head, just about fills the whole glass. Once it settle with good lacing and some retention, its a hazy and nice looking orange.

Aroma is tropical fruit as the label suggests, wow! what a concept. Seriously tho I get mango, passion fruit, banana, some hay and some light funk.

Taste is big banana and bubble gum, apple, white grape, some grass, light barnyard like or cork. Very interesting and ever changing as it warms.

High carbonation keeps this one light and spritz-y on the tongue. But it feels like its medium bodied in some ways. Then the finish is very coating, almost sticky and gummy like. It seems like this one is like liquid bubble gum.

Overall this is an interesting and somewhat remarkable beer. It keeps me guessing and wanting to dig deeper into its subtleties. I'd buy this again even at $11 for a bomber.

Bottle (2011)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, quirkzoo!

(Aged for 6+ months)

Slightly hazed peach and light orange in color with a thick, quickly forming, incredibly persistent, tightly bubbled near-white head, that eventually leaves thick ribbons of lace down the glass. A gorgeous, bubbly saison.

Mild fruit (citrus) notes along with earthy and slightly funky yeast. This isn't nearly as funky as Crooked Stave's offerings, but it's funky in a similar vein. There's some floral and light pepper notes as well.

The flavor is fruity and yeasty with only a mild level of moderate funk character. Moderately bitter, though marvelously drinkable.

Medium bodied with high carbonation. A very well crafted beer.

A fantastic saison, though I could use even more funk.

Poured a gorgeous cloudy orange with a three-finger fluffy white head that receded very slowly and left lacing all down the glass. Lively carbonation bubbles can be seen when the glass is held to light. Very good looking. Scents of spicy Belgian yeast, clove, white pepper, mango, pineapple, tropical fruit, some banana and peach, a bit of yeasty sour funk, faint fresh wheat bread and some earthy aromas. A very rich, complex, fruity flavor, with abundant tropical fruit scents and great Belgian yeast esters. A very enticing aroma profile. Flavor begins with a big hit of pineapple, mango, peach, apricot and some faint sour funk with banana entering the flavor in the middle of the sip, clove, white pepper and Belgian yeast spiciness are present throughout, but become stronger in the middle and on the finish. Alcohol flavor and warmth are present in the background and rather detectable. Finish is spicy with a nice wheat cracker malt. Aftertaste is spicy and yeasty. There is some moderate citrus peel bitterness throughout that balances the sweetness and fruity flavors. An excellent, fruity, complex flavor profile. With the sweet fruity flavors staying throughout the sip and mingling with excellent spicy, funky, yeasty flavors. Very good. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied, crisp and drying with high carbonation and some slight acidity. Very nice, quite drinkable and very refreshing. It is perfect for a hot day. Overall this is an excellent rendition of a saison. All the principle flavors of the style are present, with the very nice addition of tropical fruit flavors and aromas and a bit heavier feel than most saisons. It all comes together in a very nice, flavorful, aromatic, drinkable package that is worth seeking out.

From an 11.2 ounce bottle into a snifter.

There's a monstrous, pale white foamy head on this brew that the snifter can barely contain. Hazy orange with blonde hues in the body and a visible film of yeast. Some carbonation is visible. The head persists lovely and scatters lace everywhere. 4.25

Citrus meets fresh lilies on the aroma. There's sweet maltiness and bubblegum, and a bright floral burst. 4.1

Bubblegum city. Sweet, floral, citrusy, with a taste of caramel. There's a grassy flavor towards the finish. 4.1

Sweet, creamy, and pleasant to drink. It's medium-bodied but drinks lighter. The finish is semi-dry and free of any bitterness. 4.25

Such an excellent brew. It's simply good as hell. 4.18

The color of dehydrated, supplement enhanced urine...thats brownish yellow for those non athletes out there. Exploding carbonation and a fat white head top it off. Banana, oranges, clove, spicyness out the hizzle, a huge nose for sure! There is lemon, peaches and yeast, orange skin and spicy alcohol rocking the tongue, a bit of hop bitterness in the afterthought. Good flavor unfortunately it overpowered my palate after a few sips leaving a numb lemony taste. Good medium body that acts light and refreshing.

Overall a solid Saison from a good colorado brewery.

Another really nice saison from Funkwerks - hopped nicely with NZ Rakau hops, peppery, ginger, tropical fruit - mango, guava, some peach. Enjoyed this more than the standard saison, though both were solid. Grabbed a bottle to bring home - good stuff

Got this from SteveO, cheers Steve!

Pours a slightly hazed gold with2+ fingers of pearl colored head. Stellar lacing & head retention, never drops bight all the way

S: Perfumy hops & appleskins, plus pears & passion fruit

T: Follows the nose, some dryness & white pepper up front. Pears, more passion fruit & some grapefruit as this warms, I also get a faint bits of mango as this warms, slight breadyness& honey crisp apples too, pineapple as well. Finishes crisp, fruitty, dry with pineapple & passion fruit, plus a bit of pear & peppercorn

MF: Fairly subtle carbonation, light bodied; skews fruitty

Great drinkability, not a ton of sourness or funkyness, but this works well for me. This runs the gamut of fruyittyness with enough hop profile to balance this out. This is a beer I'd love to see in 4-pack offerings. Funk Werks, you are impressing the snot outta me!

On tap at falling rock.

Hazy gold with a fluffy and persistent white head.

Holy cow, one of the fruitiest beers I've smelled. It gives it's name due respect. Mango, pineapple, orange, and passion fruit. Extremely aromatic.

Heavy mango and orange taste. Funky and peppery finish.

Sticky and medium body. Moderate carbonation.

I loved this. The aroma is really bright and juicy.

Funkwerks - Tropic King [Imperial Saison Ale] (750 ml ---> Dogfish Head Curved Pint Glass : 8.0% ABV)

Having just tried my first home-brewed saison, I've been on a "saison kick" as of late, trying to develop a better palate for the style... Once I saw the imperial version of the Funkwerks saison I tried quite a while back, I was eager to pop the cap... Immediately upon pouring, an off white 4 inch head formed, composed of giant rocky bubbles, and slowly faded away leaving a small amount of lacing along the glass... The color is a deep golden yellow with a slight haze to it, and has a fair amount of carbonation assisting in the head's retention... In the aromas there's a decent amount of barnyard funk but it isn't overwhelmingly forward in its' presence, with an accompanying cast of lemons and yeast notes... First tasting brings forth a hoppy earthiness and slight spiciness also, fading into some subtle peach and citrus highlights, and of course some funk as well... The finish is smooth and crisp, with some more hoppy bitterness and spice to give it more depth... Mouthfeel is excellent for the style: full enough to act as a vessel for the complexity of the beer, but light enough to let the features act as their own highlights... Overall I was extremely pleased with this brew's representation of the style, as well as the great balance within the flavor profile!! Another great brew - Cheers!!

The nose presents a lot of yeast tones but reveals some citrus orange and grapefruit. It also has a perfume, rose petal and spice like aroma.

The flavor starts out with cloves and peppercorns before easing into a banana and yeasty bubblegum. Not a big Saison fan and this did little to change me over.

Poured from the bottle into an official FunkWerks globe glass.

Another great looker of a beer. An absolute orb glowing apricot body, with a middle column of small carbonation in the middle. Head rises tall, and forms such a big fluffy soapy shampoo white, mostly pinhead, and hangs and clumps on for ages. Giant clumps of white chunks and goodness. Fairly big bubbled collar also. Hot sex in a glass.

Nose is filled with a subtle sense of fruit, but also a light brett. Very dry. Hints of tropical mango and peach, spiced black pepper. Very dry, crisp and nicely balanced.

Palate hits with a lot of pepper spice. A good mix of brett like heat, peaches and fruit rush in the mid palate. Clean and dry with wonderful lively carbonation. Mild fruit character warms and comes a bit after some time but get taken over. Wonderful area spice and pepper brett combination character, downplaying some of the fruit hints. The peppery finish just goes on forever with a wonderful hint of herbal mint as it warms. Huge menthol character no doubt from the ginger (comes off more like mint to me).

If the fruit were just to pop out a bit on the palate and last then this would be just incredible. Either way it's just a fantastic beer and I am finishing this bottle in nothing flat.

750 mL courtesy of SalukiAlum pours a very hazed gold color with a massive cap of white head. Good looking beer with lots of retention and lace.

Nose is yeasty-licious with lots of tropical fruity aromas - mango, guava and pineapple.

Taste is delicious! great blend of hops and yeast. The phonics range from pepper to clove to leather. Maybe just a touch over-carbed on the mouthfeel, but otherwise I cant think of anything else to complain about. I love it when I can say I would honestly not know if a saison was American or Belgian in origin...thats the case here. Great beer.

Poured from tap into tulip at falling rock in Denver. Nice hazy hay color with big 3 finger head. Nice looking saison. Smell is typical saison peppery notes with a bit more citrus hops. Great spicey pepper and hop flavor...lots of citrus and hop but so well balanced with the saison spice. Its perfectly dry and so drinkable. Really a great saison.

Serves on tap at funkwerks tap room -

A - presents a murky peach color with a thin white head of half a finger.

S - yeast, banana, citrus, spice, and sweet candy. Mango notes come through.

T - Biscuity yeast, mango, citrus. Underwhelming malt character, but balanced. Alcoholic on the finish. Mango and peach.

M - smooth and wet. Could be blamed on being warm.

D - takes their saison to another level. Definitely a beer I'd come back to.

A: golden blond with a huge rocky white head. Great retention and nice overall look to it.
S: lots of pineapple, apricot, banana, honey and a little fresh funkiness.
T: banana, ginger and clove, grassy hops, light funk. Flavor is more spicy than fruity but shows some pineapple/apple flavors. Finishes slightly dry with a touch of bitterness.
M: medium to full body. Very creamy feel despite heavy carbonation.

First beer from Funkwerks and am impressed. A little heavy/creamy to be refreshing but it went nicely with spicy Asian food. Thanks for the opp, Nick.

Poured 24.5oz bottle into Duvel tulip. (acquired in a trade form Chugalug06)

A - Pours a nice beep dark golden pineapple color with tints of peach and a massive foaming white head. Head fades into a nice froth on top of the liquid below. Nice amounts of lacing.

S- Big tropical scents come from this. Pineapple, Mango, passion fruit. I also have floral notes of hibiscus, and lily. It does not smell tart, but a nice ripe tropical fruit smell.

T - As far as Saisons go, I love the big, sweet, ripe tropical fruit notes on this. Minimal tartness, with mild malt and spice. Just a wonderful beer to drink on a hot summer day. Some yeast is present, but the key is the tropical flavors. Damn near perfection.

M - Very nice carbonation for a Saison. Body is light. Clean and refreshing with easy drinking on a hot and humid day.

O - I absolutely loved this Saison and you should try to find a way to obtain it if you are into tropical fruit flavors. Very well done Funkwerks.

Tropic King pours a nice orange hazy color with a solid two fingers of head. Tiny bubbles surge to the surface throughout the tasting.

The is of citrus, I can pick out pineapple, passion fruit, some pale malt, and some other tropical fruits hide in the background. The aroma is magnificent.

The beer starts of a little sweet and then finishes with a nice spicy hop aftertaste, maybe pepper or ginger.

The body is medium and the mouthfeel is sticky, very enjoyable.

This is one awesome saison, it is well balanced and the spicy hop finish is perfect. Tropical fruits are also very enjoyable.

Grabbed at Funkwerks back in August personally. Had it on draft at the brewery and actually found it better out of the bottle.

A- Mostly clear mid golden pour to a few pint glasses. A white, thick creamy head forms over two fingers with good retention leaving a medium ring. Lacing is a mix of webs and spots.

S- Fruity and spicy Saison yeast and hop driven aroma. Notes of pepper, dried pineapple, mango, apricot, coriander, lemon orange zest and cooking herbs.

T- Tropical fruits up front with each sip quickly followed by the resident Saison yeast spiciness. Mango, tangerine, orange, dried pineapple leads up to peppercorn, straw, herbal, floral and zesty yeast.

MF- Light to medium bodied with a spritzy crisp and silky creamy body. Carbonation is high as it should be promoting the delicate flavors. Finishes slightly warm and medium bitterness.

Tropic indeed. Actually feels more so than the sample I had on draft at the brewery. Tropical fruits paired nicely with hefty Saison yeast.

Reviewing from notes taken on 3/29/13.

Poured from a bottle into tulip glass.

A: Pours a cloudy burnt orange color. Leaves a great lacing with solid retention. Head is bright white and very fizzy. This one has high carbonation for sure.

S: Waft is black peppery spice. Yeasty belgian esters shine, backed with notes of guava, mango, papaya, pineapple, and banana. This one smells fantastic.

T: The yeast is predominant in the initial sip. The peppery spice takes from throughout the middle of the drink, and the fruity juices finish out with some funk and earthiness.

M: Medium body. High carbonation, but it's not as high as the initial pour led me to believe. Dry, but oddly still somewhat creamy.

O: A very nice beer. The smell and taste of this guy is so complex that it truly shocked me. Every sip something different shined through and took center stage. I'd love to get my hands on another one of these.

Big thanks to fortsambo for sending this bottle out my way. Thanks also to rake for sending this in the Sour, Saison, & Funk BIF. Served in a Funkwerks tulip.

Pours a nice golden color with a thick, foamy white head and a good bit of sheety lacing on the way down. Good cap and collar throughout.

The nose has some light fruits and a bit of white pepper. Light perfume and floral hops. The hops come out a bit more in the flavor. Nice Belgian varieties. Light bready malt. Touch of earth. Body is light-medium with good carbonation. Semi-dry finish.

Nice beer. Would like a bit more yeast character for a beer of this size, but still quite good.
