From a 750 ml into a tulip.

A-The beer pours a cloudy, straw-color. An average pour yielded two-plus fingers of shiny, white foam. There was some very fine carbonation visible, which kept the head around for a bit. Nice lacing left behind.

S-Huge banana/clove/yeast on the nose. Also some bright lemon and orange flavors, as well as a little hay and alcohol spice. Really nice.

T-Taste follows the smell pretty closely. You get a wave of the aforementioned flavors, plus a little apple and funkiness on the finish. The alcohol gets a little spicier and more medicinal as the brew warms up a bit.

M-The fine carbonation makes for a creamy mouthfeel and a lighter body. I actually could have used a little bit more pop here.

O-I really enjoyed this beer and would rank it up there with some of my favorite tripels, e.g., Karmeliet, and Fin du Monde. The flavors are concentrated and complex and the alcohol is well integrated, which makes for a great smelling and drinking brew. I could have used more carbonation, but I will definitely seek this out again.

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy straw amber with a big creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet malts and banana with straw and yeast.

The flavor is sweet soapy belgian malts and banana with some earthy yeast and a dry, almost plasticky, finish. There's a bit of warming alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a lot of spritzy carbonation.

Overall, an OK Belgian with some off-notes.

Poured a clear golden yellow with a thin bit of white head that left abundant lacing. Not as cloudy as some Belgians, but not out of style. Pretty good. Scents of apricot, candi sugar, Belgian yeast, tangerine and slight overripe fruit, sourness, and graininess with hints of alcohol, barnyard funk and bubblegum as it warms. A pretty well done, balanced yet complex Belgian nose, pretty true to form for a Tripel. Taste begins with Belgian yeast, bitter citrus rind, balanced with candi sugar sweetness, apricot and apricot pit. There is also a slight sour hint, a bit of funk and some grain on the finish. The finish overall is bitter and rather dry. A bit of spiciness as well. Again, rather true to Tripel style, but maybe a bit more bitter than some other examples of the style, not bad though. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied with moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall this is a pretty good Belgian ale. It has the usual complex aromas and flavors of a Tripel, but adds just a bit more bitterness than usual to balance it out. It's quite refreshing and hides it's alcohol well. I have to say I am impressed.

750ml bottle served slightly chilled into a goblet.

I've been looking forward to trying this ever since the GABF results came out. Congrats to Funkwerks on winning gold!

Deceit is a very pale golden yellow color with good clarity. The head is thick and slow to settles leaving some spotty lacing on the glass.

Aroma is full of sweet and tart lemon character. It smells fresh and well-hopped for a Belgian.

Flavor is big and intense with more lemon, some pepper, and alcohol. It's not hot but the alcohol lets you know it's there. each sip goes from sweet, to bitter, and finally finishes dry and crisp.

Mouthfeel is light in body, nicely carbonated, and well balanced. Alcohol dries the palate on the finish.

Overall another strong offering from Funkwerks.

The beer has a a white and creamy head that dissipates quickly. The beer itself is a golden amber that is clear and filtered. The beer smell is an interesting combination of smells. The dominant smell is apricot with a bit of Belgian funk. Other smells include some Belgian spices, sugar and a slightly yeasty smell as well. The more subtle smells consist of hints of peach and honey as well as a bit of alcohol. However, the other smells a bit subtle. The beer's taste is similar to its smell. The dominant flavor is apricot and the Belgian spices including clove. Unlike the smell, that taste has a lesser yeast presence that is dominated by other flavors. The beer has a wheat flavor that is very present and noticeable. Additionally, the beer has slight honey notes and a bit of alcohol taste. The beer has a slight alcohol warmth. Other than the alcohol taste, the beer has a clean and slightly crisp feel. Additionally, the beer feels smooth with a slight slickness at the end of the drink. Heavy bodied. Overall, a pretty good and unique Tripel.

Deceit – Imperial Saison (9.0%) - Funkwerks (Colorado)

App: Pours a slightly hazy lemon yellow with a nice one finger chalky white head that eventually settles, leaving massive amounts of dense lacing all the way up the glass. Some evident carbonation.

Smell: Aroma hints toward a Golden ale, with strong notes of banana, and a slight clove like spiciness coupled with a walnut maltiness which rounds out an otherwise sweet nose with some deeper aroma. Esters very noticeable, slightly sour as well. Hop aromas very minimal.

Taste: Toasted grainy sweetness comes together with fruity esters on the foretaste to create a flavor that transitions from banana pudding like heaviness to lemony tartness. One of those special beers that has distinct flavor evolution the longer you hold it on your palate. Even at 9% this beer goes down almost too easy. Hence the name.

Mouth: Light to medium bodied with significant carbonation that makes flavors dance across the tongue. Alcohol comes through a little more here with a volatility that is noticeable, but not off putting.
