Poured on tap at Funkwerks tasting room in Fort Collins into a Funkwerks globe glass.

A beaming yellow lemon body, just glowing superbly with a giant rocky bright white head, thick and fluffy. Immense staying power, peaks and valleys, and lots of lacing, and just a hint of tracing carbonation trickling through, and absolutely stunning looking brew.

Nose hits with great spice notes and lemon. Powdered ginger accents quite a bit, extremely airy and piercing, just killer. Mild noted funk. Once again much of the flavors sensed are all noticeable with impeccable balance.

Palate bring mild brett/funk hints, and all the sense from the bouquet. Ginger brings a little bit of a spice angle, but doesn't overpower. Malts hold well taking every flavor and giving it a turn. Hints of orange tangerine fruit even show up, and with warmth there is even some peanut butter. The mouthfeel is fairly simple, but it's certainly not detracting from the other qualities of the beer which are superb.

A real fun one to drink, very impressive.

Served on-tap at the Funkwerks brewery.

Montagne is a hazy golden yellow color with thick white head. it settles quickly but leaves some nice lacing behind.

Aroma is fresh and citrusy with hints of lemon zest and ginger.

Flavor is very enjoyable with bursts of lemon, pepper, and ginger as noticed on the nose. It has good drinkability and depth which can be a hard-to-find combination.

Mouthfeel is light in body, well balance and nicely carbonated.

Overall another really nice Saison from the brewery that (rightfully) specializes in the style.

Prototype series. 6.1% ABV confirmed. "Saison" per the bottle, so the style categorization is also confirmed. Bottled 09/20/12. "0 year cellar limit". 750ml brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a Belgian Independence Day stem-tulip. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average.

Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a three finger white colour head of decent cream, nice thickness, and good retention. Colour is a light pale copper. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Clear and translucent. Not ideal for a saison, but passable. I'd expect more of a milky appearance from a quality saison, and perhaps some yeast as well.

Sm: Clean pale malts, lactic notes, bretts, and hints of spice. No pepper, though - a feature I always look for in a good saison. A moderate strength aroma. Little yeast comes through if any. No alcohol is detectable.

T: Clean pale malt body with a mess of bretts and lactic notes atop. Painfully dreadfully simple for a saison - a style that demands masterful subtlety and complexity to come off. Balanced but extremely underwhelming. Really a disappointment. Hints of yeasty character. No alcohol comes through. I'm not a fan of this one.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Too thick for the style, preventing it from being refreshing. Slight overcarbonation. Not ideal for the style at all, and not particularly complementary of the flavour profile either.

Dr: Drinkable but disappointing. Funkwerks continues to let me down. I wouldn't trifle with this again. Hides its modest ABV well. Not recommended. Considering it's in their flagship style, this beer suggests a major problem with Funkwerks.

Pours a hazy dirty yellow with an orange hue, huge white foamy head and decent lacing. A sweet and yeasty aroma. Belgian yeast sets the foundation, with some pepper and clove, there's a touch of ginger hanging out, and nice, welcomed sweetness of some orange juice. Flavor switching things around as the sweet oranges mixed with ginger take the forefront and that transitions into the yeasty finish with some spices and a dry and sharp peppery finish. Medium bodied, active mouthfeel. Overall, I don't know if this was just a case of me jonesing for some Funkwerks or what but I highly enjoyed this one a heck of a lot.
