Sweet, Toffee, Fruits, Warming

Formerly known as "Quad," Ten is mahogany in color (slight chill haze at first) with a creamy tan head. Fruity esters, toffee and chocolate in the nose. Its silky, viscous mouthfeel gives way to warming alcohol that flushes across the face. Sweet and malty with big dollop of toffee in the center, followed by ripe dark fruits, dry chocolate and raisiny notes. A touch of soft black pepper and breadiness join the 10 percent alcohol in the linger. Quadalicious.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #108 (January 2016).

750 ml capped bottle picked up at the brewery. Bottled 8-12-2013. Part of their prototype series.

Served slightly chilled into a goblet, Funkwerks Quad is unexpectedly light in color, more like an amber. It has a very hazy appearance with thin white head.

Aroma is dominated by the yeast, which isn't a bad thing because its pleasant. I believe it's their house yeast strain that's used for the saisons. What it's lacking is the dark fruits, toffee, and raisins that I would expect in a quad.

The same goes for the flavor. It's enjoyable but seems to missing the candi sugar and dark dried fruits. The malts are lighter, the yeast is more forward, and it's funky like a farmhouse ale.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and strongly carbonated like many Belgians tend to be. The alcohol is stronger than all of their other beers but it doesn't seem hot or overpowering.

Overall an unusual take on the classic quad. It definitely has the saison influence and that's their thing. I would just take it a little darker and sweeter. I'm glad that they give their fans a chance to try their experimental beers!

Fruity. Light but the right mouthful. I love the flavors throughout

Brief impressions from a bottle courtesy of Blakelive784:

HEAD: ~2 inches wide. Pale khaki colour. Average characteristics. ~8 minute retention.

BODY: Amber colour. Translucent. No yeast can be seen within.

Looks decent for a quadrupel.

AROMA: Hints of muted dark fruits - dates & prunes. A hint of raisin. Malty sweetness. Amber malts - maybe Vienna? Could be carapils. Any candi sugar is rather reticent.

Not boozy or off.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Faint plum, marmalade, sticky jammy raisin, amber malts/Vienna malts, and darker malts (plus barley/2 row). Not as sticky or syrupy as would ruin it, but it's far from ideal in terms of mouthfeel. Smooth, wet, unrefreshing, and medium-bodied. Lacks the fragility and delicacy of the finest beers in the style. It's unbalanced but not imbalanced, with a cohesive build that never quite comes off as more than the sum of its parts.

More vivid (and varied) dark fruits would really help. The depth of flavour just isn't there, and it lacks the subtlety, intricacy, and expressive Belgian yeast characteristics of finer beers in the style. More pronounced candi sugar notes wouldn't hurt.

OVERALL: Mediocre - and frankly, bad as a quad - but outside of style conventions it's above average. I definitely wouldn't buy another bottle, but I've had worse. Funkwerks should stick to their bread and butter - funky beers - and leave quadrupels to the Belgians.

C+ / ABOVE AVERAGE

750ml
Bottled On: 2015.10.15

Poured into a chalice a very nice brownish/grapey color, very nice carbonation, with a nice creamy one-finger off-white head, which leaves minimal sticky lacing behind. The nose is pretty nice malty, yeasty, with some dark fruits. The taste is very nice, malty, yeasty, with some very nice grape, raisins, plums, fig notes. Medium body, ABV is hidden pretty well. Overall, this is a very nice brew. My first from this brewery.

Pours copper with an orange hue and a white head that disappears before I can even get a sip in. Aroma and flavor are similar; the trademark Funkwerks yeast is there making me think saison before remembering I ordered the Quad, caramel, honey, and hints of dark fruits. Medium body with light activity. Overall, not a fan of this one personally. Would not buy again.
