Had on cask at the Old Toad in Rochester. I live near the brewery (which just recently went into production), so I was really pumped to try it. The appearance befits the style: a warm deep brown/red with beautiful lacing. I didn't detect much of a smell, so I just dove right in to the taste, which blew me away by it's balance. The hops are crisp but subtle, but the real highlight is the earthy malts. This tastes very much like an English bitter or pale. Definitely a session beer that I would be happy to drink all night. I look forward to trying more offerings from this home-town brewery.

a very dark red beer, nearly brick red in color with several inches of snow white head to contrast, great looks. the nose and taste though are less compelling. sweeter and sticky hops only add to an already sugary beer from the huge amount of red and amber malts used here. toffee sweetness throughout, generic ale yeast, and only flashes of hop bitterness, despite an abundance of hop flavor overall. perhaps not the most flattering varietals were selected for this brew. I do like all the body on it though, a good cold weather amber, fills me up with just a few pints too. while the flavors are not my favorite of the naked dove stuff, their quality as a brewery is evident from the full flavored nature of this beer, as well as its personality. enough carbonation, more than enough body. I liked their other beers better, but this is a better than average amber.

A: Reddish and darker than some other American amber ales. Also, good head retention on a growler filled at the brewery.
S: Nice balance of malt sweetness and earthy floral hops. Both are subtle and paired well, with neither being overpowering.
T: Malts are medium in body, matching the color and the roasted malts retain a subtle sweetness. The beer finishes only a touch bitter playing on the malt character.
M: Right where it should be, drinkable with a solid body helped by the contribution of hearty malt grains.
O: A solid example of an amber ale, especially considering how hard this style is to find these days. Very good flavor and a nicely balance, this is a tasty offering that can be enjoyed year round and many bars throughout Upstate NY.

This is the bread and butter of Naked Dove. This Amber Ale has a nice color (a deep amber), great taste (everyone from those Bud Light drinkers to the Dog Fish Head 120 min drinkers) will find this beer to drink-able, if not great. This is typically one of my "go-to's" for when I've got to bring something to a party--a bottle of wine just can't convey my personality right.
