Stopped in Big Muddy over the weekend while staying nearby in Grafton. It was a tiny storefront with two stories of neons in the window, and a trademark blue awning with a riverboat on it.
The rest of the town was dead silent, yet there was a car being towed right outside, and a drunken snowboarder regaled us with tales of a 4 block downhill run he made the night before right down 3rd St. So it seemed this was where the action was...
Inside the front room was fairly small with a few tables and the bar to the left. A staircase led to a 2nd floor only used for private parties. In the back was a larger room with tables and a projection screen for the Bears/Packers playoff game.
The bar itself was classic with old dark wood, the worn plank floorboards contrasted with exposed brick walls and a white bannister staircase. Framed ads and macro neons hung sparsely on the walls. There were a handful of crafts here, though the selection was 50% macros. 2XIPA, Bells Best Brown, Schlafly Coffee Stout, and Dry Hopped APA (on tap) were the highlights. Surprised to see they don't carry Big Muddy beer. It's available in Edwardsville and Central IL... maybe a distribution thing, oh well.
Crowd was local and they were playing "obscure" hair metal and bluegrass covers of Journey on Pandora... Service was pretty quick and on top of things. Overall a decent place for a beer in downtown Alton... a stones throw from Bossanova (more extensive bottle selection), Ragin' Cajun, and Tonys (Six Row on tap).

This is a nice little place in the Alton bar district.Atmosphere can vary from Hippy, jam band venue to Hardcore kids hangout or,as was the case on my last visit, lesbian rendesvous point.Their beer selection has vastly improved since I first started going there three years ago.Beers on tap consist of Boulevard Wheat,Guinness,Schlafly Pale Ale and a few macros that shall remain unnamed.Nothing real exciting there.Their bottle selection's highlights include Bell's Two Hearted and Best Brown,Southern Tier's 2XIPA and Hopsun,O'Fallon's Wheach and Hemp Hop Rye,New Holland's Mad Hatter IPA and cans of Ska Modus Hoperandi.Decent service and a rapidly improving selection with affordable pricing make this a Southern Illinois BA must try. Some new and exciting tap selections would make this spot even more desirable.
