Pours a jet black with a finger and a half of foamy head that slowly dissipates to a thin ring with some lacing. Aroma of chocolate and faint orange. Taste follows nose. Chewy. Excellent.

"Our third anniversary beer is inspired by the classic combination of dark chocolate and oranges. A dark and roasty imperial stout base is infused with cocoa nibs, copious amounts of fresh oranges, and a hint of vanilla. Can be enjoyed now or cellared up to one year." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial Stout, available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft. The third entry in the very sought-after anniversary ale series by Westbrook.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter glass.
(Appearance) Pours a medium brown smooth foam head over a very dark brown, near black body. Retention is above average and lacing is light and patchy. 4
(Smell) Chocolate malts, moderate roasted grains, toasted caramel grains with a mild sweetness, a sharp pithy citrus and earthy bitterness with a lingering note of acidic coffee beans and trace vanilla. Potency is moderate. 3.75
(Taste) Very profound dark chocolate flavor with an orange tang character and a modest sweetness. Finishes on a rich note of earthy malt, roasted coffee and lingering cacao bean flavor. Very rich, decadent, the orange lends itself lightly to the beer and doesn't steal the show. Very enjoyable. 4.25
(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, smooth, lightly chewy, earthy, mildly dry. Carbonation is modest, generating a medium frothiness and a mildly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, shy of heavy overall. Balance is very slightly earthy and citrusy bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is mild and there are no off characters. 4
(Overall) A very enjoyable stout. The orange angle generates a delicate orange zest and some mild acidity to the richness of the chocolate-heavy stout, and these two features play off each other nicely. They hit the chocolate level spot-on in this beer- rarely do I experience a stout that finishes so much like pure, rich dark chocolate. I missed the recommended enjoy by according to the brewery, but still found this beer very enjoyable with notable orange and chocolate flavors well in their prime by year two. 4
