Got both of these Panthers from cparles a while back. Cheers man!

From a bomber into a snifter
Bottled 4 February 2014

APPEARANCE: : Pours pitch black and sludgy, yielding a 2+ finger, thicker looking, dark mocha colored head with great retention. Dark black body with zero visible carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a good full, dense wisp. A good wisp remains until the end but leaves no lacing down the glass. Very black body and a nice colored head on this one, with less visible carbonation than the bourbon variant. A bit more lacing would have made this the perfect looking stout.

SMELL: Roasted malts, burnt notes, lots of pure dark chocolate, oak, vanilla, coconut, sweet cream, some apple brandy and alcohol on the nose. Touches of caramel and toffee as well. Another massive nose with a wonderful balance between rich base stout and brandy barrels. Pure awesomeness. Both of these Panthers smell like perfection.

TASTE: Lots of oak, brandy, toffee and some notes of vanilla cream up front, with notes of roasted and burnt malts as well. Big aftertaste of sweet apple brandy, sweet wood flavors, toffee, cream, touches of bitter dark chocolate and some burnt malts as well. Lots of sweetness from the wood, with a very obvious apple brandy coating over it all. A little less vanilla flavor than the bourbon version, and the apple brandy barrel definitely does its thing here. There is a touch of bitter dark chocolate and roasted grain that fight for balance, but it’s not quite up to the task, unfortunately. This is definitely decadent and wonderfully flavorful, but like the bourbon version, the bitterness needs to be pumped up just a touch to provide a bit more balance.

PALATE: Medium body and slightly higher levels of carbonation. Creamy and smooth on the palate, goes down fine and finishes mouth-coating. A little lighter in weight than the bourbon variant, but still creamy and silky on the palate.

OVERALL: Another great brew that is on par with the bourbon barrel in terms of quality. The appearance is better and resembles Skoon instead, and the feel is a touch lighter and more carbonated, surprisingly enough, than the bourbon variant, but otherwise, this is an impressive brew in an even more impressive pair. The aging in apple brandy barrels certainly adds a quality all of its own, and I enjoyed the sweetness it imparted on the beer in an equal but different way that I enjoyed the bourbon barrel’s stamp on this one. A fun pair that I’m very glad I was able to try. Thanks again for the brews cparles! These were all excellent.
