Citrus Ninja Exchange is the first of two collaboration beers brewed with The Charleston Beer Exchange. The first incarnation (released on draft only in September 2011) was a single-hopped Cascade double IPA brewed with approximately 50 lbs of fresh grapefruit, and then dry-hopped 4 times in the fermentor. The 2012 version has a simplified malt bill and uses a blend of American and New Zealand hop varieties.

Tasting on 9/9/14

This beer is a thickly hazed dark gold in color sporting a fluffy crown of off-white head at about a finger and a half. It holds up there strongly, dropping down very slowly while it drops down some pretty chunky lace.
This beer really is all about citrus, but with some tropical fruits and lots of balancing sweetness to back it up. At the front of every sip, it's both sweet and sour with a touch of funk to it, but no tangy note. It remains a hoppy beer even with strong contributions from honey and caramel notes. Grapefruit juice hits up front and runs all the way through even as it's joined by some really resinous bitterness and notes of pineapple and apricot. For added complexity, it's complemented by a good black pepper note and finishes out with a lingering mix of juicy and dry, orange flesh and rind coming in with a lemony twang to fill out the full citrus profile.
It's fluffy and bright on the tongue but brisk at the same time, a medium body sustained by strong carbonation but never too heavy or airy. The crispness remains firm and runs from start to finish alongside a flowing smoothness.

22oz. capped bomber into a Founders snifter.

Pours a 1 finger frothy white head with decent retention. Beer is a cloudy dark orange. Lacing is thick and layered with excellent stick. Nice.

Nose is sappy, cane sugar, brown sugar, molasses, and pine resin. Nicely aromatic but this isn't the type of floral, citrus hop nose that I usually go for.

Opens citrus, cane sugar, grapefruit juice and sap bitterness. Very sweet with a pretty mild hop presence. Sap, molasses and resin sweetness in the middle. Ends more sugar and sweetness. Almost cloyingly with little hop balance. Not really my cup of tea.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and warm in the mouth and goes down warm and rich. Messy finish with a big, lingering aftertaste. Solid.

Pretty average overall, against, this is not the "style" of IPA that I usually go for. A decent beer but a bit sweet.

Poured from 22 oz bomber into tulip. Bottle dated 8/8/2014.

A: Pours a slightly hazy light golden yellow with one to two finger egg shell colored head. Some spotty lacing.

S: Wow! Big punch of grapefruit and oranges. A touch of honey and caramel.

T: Nice three way balance between juicy citrus, hop bitterness, and honey sweetness. Grapefruit zest, and orange peel.

M: Full bodied leaving a coating of hop oils on the tongue. Initially this was quite sweet, but the hop bitterness shined through a bit more as it warmed.

O: Excellent DIPA. I just wish I could have grabbed more than one bottle, one was the limit, and it sold out in just a few hours.
